My family changed Dodson to Dotson in Kentucky or a bit before--they go by both. My brother, first son back 5 generations that we know, did the DNA test and it came out border country between Scotland and England and then connect to Virginia Dodsons of Richmond. All the 1st sons are named Wm. and then vary middle names. John Dodds' is the 1607 laborer/carpenter on the Susan Constant. John Smith mentions him in his journals, later on, as a soldier. He was no gentleman. He survived the first excusion, and when he married, I doubt it would be recorded. No unions between Native people and English were recorded. For that matter, Crazy Horse's parents' union was not recorded, yet we know from oral history exactly who his parents were. I met a descendant of Boston Custer, by the way, the only surviving Custer brother, who said their family had a Shawnee grandmother. More on this in my book Ghost Stories of the New West (Woodley, 2010). He said that was ! oral tradition, but I looked up western MD where he said she was from, and sure enough, there had been a Shawnee town there. Wish it were all nailed down for us in documents, but it isn't. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
