Martha's sister Elizabeth married a man named Shields and they were early settlers in TN. Elizabeth's son was the gunsmith who traveled with Lewis and Clark on their trip west. It was his skill in repaiging their weapons that kept them supplied with game and safety. The trip was rugged and his health declined afterwards. --------------------------------- Brings words and photos together (easily) with PhotoMail - it's free and works with Yahoo! Mail.
Hi, I dont have my data in front of me but I believe the date for George is closer to 1846-1848. He is buried in Eagle Creek Cemetary which is now a wooded area overlooking a steep bank above Eagle Creek and a County road. I have been on the county road and saw the bluff but didnt want to trespass over the private property from the residential area. It is a beautiful locationa for the final resting place of a pioneer! Martha was presumed dead by 1848, however, I found her on the 1850 census living with her son Rev Ruel Dodson in Vermilion Co IL. I suspect she may be buried near Ruel. That cemetary is overgrown with prairie grass and is on private property also in a designated nature preserve of the Audobon Society. I did trespass there about 10 years ago and his stone was in good condition but difficult to photograph. While the weather is cold I would like to visit there again soon to take a photograph. Ruel started the Vermilion Chapel congregation in Vermilion Co and his son, Rev George Dodson built the church on family land. It is located near the Dodson cemetery in Kennekuk County Park near Danville, IL. The Church was the inspiration for the creation of an historical village. A school, store, and farmhouse have been moved to a location near Vermilion Chapel. I took my grandchildren there this year for there Christmas celebration and winter walk. Shirley, was your Dad born in Virginia? What is his birthdate? Do you know his father's birthdate or Ida Corbin's birthdate? Any additional details that you know will help someone else help you unless by some slim chance someone who already knows the family happens to be on the list and able to provide you with the information. During the Rev. War, individual citizens "donated" goods (voluntarily or not) to the cause. They were given receipts. Most people thought those receipts would be no good and they would never see that money, but Virginia residents were given the opportunity to file these public claims for reimbursement. What follows is a list of Dodson claims that I found. There could be more of course. Also, payment was not necessarily prompt. I have one line where an estate settlement in 1791 was delayed waiting for this payment. Caleb Dodson - Halifax Co., - 30# bacon, 1# (pound as in money), 10s, 20 pound bacon, same amount, 3 days service himself and horse 9 shillings Elisha Dodson - 10 bushels Indian corn 1# 5 sh, 9 diets, 4 forrages, 14s, 9 diets and 1 ferrage - 12 s, 460 # fodder 13#9s, 11 bushels Indian corn, 1#7s6pence, 60# meal, 5s, 40 # bacon, 2#, 2.5 gal whiskey, 15s. (I believe this is Halifax co.) Thomas Dodson Jr (probably Halifax) - 50.5 lb bacon, 2.18.6 (pounds, shillings, pence), 30# bacon, 40# meal, 1.13.4, 11 gal brandy, 5.10, 2 bushels oats, 3s, 5 bu Indian corn, 12s.6, 8 forrages, 10s, 8 diets, 10 s, ditto, 1s.3, 2 forrages 1s.6, ditto, 1 diet 1s.3 Charles Dodson - Richmond Co - 275# beef for Continental army - (note - there were lots of Dobyns of this page) Daniel Dodson - Dinwiddie Co. - 16 days waggonage - 8 # Daniel Dodson - saddlers work for Cont. - 10.6.6 Daniel Dodson - 4 days waggonage for Cont, wagon and team, 43 days Daniel Dodson - Pittsylvania Co. - 8.5 bu corn, 10 # bacon for Cont - 1.15.6 Edward Dodson - 350 lb beef - Mecklenburg Co.
