Hello Michelle, I also am very interested in your papers on the SMOOT and DODSON line. We have also HUNTS and DURHAMS. We have our Dodson's back to Jamestown, the SMOOTS, HUNTS, DURHAMS are another matter. I'm in the DAR and always looking for new ancestors to get supplementals on. I would appreciate it if you could send what information you have on the above lines. Thanks very much. ---------- > From: Monya Havekost <monyah@conterra.com> > To: DODSON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: Dodsons and Hanks > Date: Sunday, October 12, 1997 9:46 AM > > Hi Michelle, > > I am very interested in your papers on the SMOOT and DODSON line. Hi Michelle, I am very interested in your papers on the SMOOT and DODSON line. I've just recently discovered how the Smoots are connected to my Dodson line. I also have a Smoot who married into my MUSGROVE line. Would you mind sending me this information as well? I'd love to read what you've written. Hi fellow DODSON researchers, I am searching for the parents of Isaiah DODSON b. 11 Apr 1809 TN d. 12 Apr 1866 AR as the result of being shot through the jaws by jayhawkers. Isaiah was married to Elizabeth M. DICKEY 2 Nov 1837 TN. Their first child James R. C. was born in TN 26 Dec 1838. In 1840 Isaiah was in Searcy County, AR then was in Newton County, AR by 1850. Other children of Isaiah and Elizabeth are Mary Manerva DODSON b. 28 Oct 1840 George Hamilton Thomas DODSON "Bunk" b. 1 Apr 1843 Lydia Elizabeth DODSON b. 25 Aug 1848 John M. R. DODSON b. 17 Dec 1851 David B. DODSON b. 29 Sep 1853 William M. L. DODSON b. 11 May 1856 Benjamin Frank DODSON b. 18 Nov 1858 Roland H. DODSON b. 16 Mar 1864 Isaiah and Elizabeth are both buried in the Dodson Cemetery on Cave Creek in Newton County, Arkansas. Does anyone out there have anything on my Isaiah in their files? Hi, I'm not from that same line, but I just checked The Dodson Family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia vol. 1 by Williams and Lucas, looking for a Daniel Dodson. I didn't see one, but your Daniel may be from a branch of the family not covered in this book. There were slews of Dodsons in Pittsylvania County from 1765 when the first (Lambeth) emigrated down from Richmond Co, probably until now. My line left about 1790 when Thomas "second Fork" Dodson III moved with his wife Mary Neville to Hawkins County in what is now Tennessee. By then, "my" name had changed to Hanks and "we" were on our way west! I'll try to take a look at the Oath of Allegiance and see if a Daniel Dodson was a signer. Good luck, Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA
I saw the note on the book about the Dodson family in MO. I have Cornelius Walter Harkness married to Rhoda Belle Dodson b 1880 in KS> Her father Benjamin Dodson b. about 1860 in MO. We do not know the names of any of Benjamin's siblings, nor do we know the names of any of Rhoda Belle's siblings. Would it be possible for you to check the book you mentioned and see if Eli Jr. had any children by either of these names? You did not mention any dates in your last reference.] Judy White

McCanse St. > Springfield, MO 65803-3613 > ggohr01@mail.orion.org Glenn, Eli Dodson was born in White Co., Tenn. and died in Marion Co., Ark. His parents were Eli E. Dodson born 1798 in Shenandoah Co., Va. and died March 17,1828 in white Co., Tenn., and Mary "Polly" J. Goad born 1807 in Va. and died Oct. 12,1831. His grand parents were William Dodson and Tabitha Hendrick. From what I understand Col. Eli Dodson was brought up by his uncle Alexander Goad after his mother passed away and that is who brought him to Ark. I hope this helps you out. Sandy Noordhof Pontiac, Ill. noordhof@fcg.net
Sandra, Since I started this discussion with you, I better finish this. I'm also sending this to the Dodson List in case someone else is interested. Your Eli Dodson (b. 1798 in VA) is listed in the 2-vol. Dodson book on p. 211. It gives a reference to A REMINISCENT HISTORY OF THE OZARK REGION where he is mentioned. I live in Springfield, MO, which is called the "Queen City of the Ozarks" and have seen the above book in our local library if you'd like me to copy some pages from it regarding your ancestor. More is given on Eli and his wife, Mary "Polly" Goad on p. 212. It says that Eli was the father of one child, Eli Jr., and Eli Jr. was the father of 21 children! More on Eli Jr.'s children is given on p. 1023 & 1024. That is as far down as that family is taken in the book. Of course all the earlier generations give much interesting information in the book and are listed. I'll also mention that the local library here has a book on the Goad Family which might list some of your family if I can ever get around to checking it. In fact, in my line of Dodson/Hanks descendants there was a Rev. Thomas Hanks who settled in Christian County, Missouri (very near here) whose wife was a Nancy Mary Goad of Maury Co., TN. Other Goads also intermarrried with the Dodsons. I am not a Goad descendant, but I'd be glad to check in the Goad book for any info. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

Glenn Gohr has passed his Dodson list to me for management. I thank Glenn for this opportunity to become more active in the Rootsweb community. I just began my Virginia Dodson family research this year. Without this list I would have had a minimum of information. Instead, I have names and dates, along with some family history, of more than 1000 ancestors. Alley wchs@prodigy.net (Dodson List Manager)
Dear Dodson Researchers, I am the man behind the scenes who started this list and has kept it running smoothly since March of this year. Originally the list was managed through MAISER at Indiana University. Their system crashed due to thousands of spam e-mail going through the entire MAISER system. They decided to quit handling the e-mail discussion lists on various surnames, but thankfully Rootsweb was gracious to take over all the surname lists and keep them running. The lists were down for the first 3 weeks of May and were started up again with Rootsweb the last week of May. Rootsweb does not charge anyone (not even the list manager) for the use of this service, although they do take donations (and are soliciting financial help). I work full-time & have a 5-yr-old and a 1-yr-old at home, plus I edit 2 family surname newsletters which are mailed out, am local president of the Sons of the Am. Revolution, am active in my church, and the list goes on and on. I am also list manager for about 10 other family surname lists. Thus I find it increasingly difficult to remain as the list manager for the Dodson List. I am turning the list over to Alley Blackford who should do a very capable job of assisting anyone who needs it. Her e-mail address is: wchs@prodigy.net She also has a web page devoted to Dodsons at: http://pages.prodigy.net/wchs Other surname lists available through Rootsweb are shown at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Another excellent source of info. on various surnames is John Fuller's website: http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html Hope this information is helpful to everyone. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr (Former Dodson List Manager) ggohr01@mail.orion.org

There is no rush on this Glenn, it's just something interesting I happened to see and be curious about. I have a list of the signers of the Oath of Allegiance and there are two Thomas Dodsons on it. Somewhere in my travels I also obtained a copy of a 1790 or so map of Pittsylvania County which has Birch Creek on it (along with Turkey Cocke Creek which rings a bell in my mind but I can't remember why!). Birch Creek is in the southeastern corner of the county, and therefore very close to Halifax County. For that reason, riding the creek into the River Dan? (I don't have the map in front of me and it's time to make breakfasts and lunches), would take you right to Halifax. Henry County and Hill? probably not, but you never know! Michelle
I am also researching an ancestor, Thomas DodsonII, who served 6 yrs. in the Revolutionary War. First from the fall of1775 to the fall of 1778. Second time from the fall of 1778 to the fall of 1781. During the first enlistment he was in the Second Pa. Regiment under Colonial Anthony Wayne and Captain Caleb North and the 2nd enlistment he was in the 5th Pa. Regiment under Colonel Johnson and Captain John Christie. He fought in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. He was born Nov.25,1747 in Chester Co., Pa. to Thomas DodsonI and Mary Prigg -married to Mahitabel Bixby -died Apr.10,1825 and is buried in Shenadoah Co.,Virginia. Applied for his pension in Virginia on May 25,1818 and received it. Karen Wasson
Michelle, Regarding the two Thomas Dodsons you mention and their furnishing supplies to the Rev. army in Halifax Co., VA. I'll need to look over the DAR applications I have in my files (they are boxed away at present) to see what they list. I was thinking that Thomas Dodson III (2nd Fork) also signed an oath of allegiance in Pittsylvania Co. But I think Rev. Thomas Dodson, his father, did furnish supplies. But I didn't remember it being in Halifax County, but that is right next door to Pittsylvania Co. I'll check the DAR applications I have. Also the Public Service Claims for all of Virginia are in book form now. A copy is in the local library here. It includes these court record booklets that you quoted from. S. E. Lucas's book on the Dodsons says there were several Thomas Dodsons living at the same time in that area of Virginia. I'll check my records and get back with you. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org
