Hello, I'm doing research on a Stephen Dodson Fox. Does anyone out there have any DODSON history relating to this name ? As far as I know, he lived in Cortland, NY for a short while sometime between 1824 and 1836 before moving to Ontario, Canada ( Upper Canada, Canada West ). Thanks, Rob Fox Vancouver, Canada

I have seen several references to the above book. Would someone let me know the name of the author, the publisher and if the book is still in print and available? Thanks. Thomas H. Bryant
Daniela/Michelle/Glenn Gohr/Everyone: I descend from John C Dodson whose Will was probated in Wilkes Co, Ga 1841. I do not know if he descends from Ignatius and Cloe Dodson whose estate was probated in Wilkes Co, Ga about 1825. (Actually, Ignatius had died in 1818. Cloe died in 1824. The whole estate was probated in 1824-26.) There is an Ignatius and Cloe Dodson in Charles Co, MD which may very well be the same people. (After all, how many Ignatius' could there be? Plus, how many Ignatius' would have a wife Cloe?). In the Dodson book on the North Farnham Parish Dodsons, it mentions Cloe Bates married Thomas Dodson in Halifax Co, Va 1798. Cloe was possibly a sister of Elizabeth Bates who married 1789 Presley Dodson in Halifax Co, Va. The purchasers at the estate sale of Ignatius and wife Cloe 9 Dec 1824 were Charles Dodson (probably a son) (He got the Family Bible), Walter Dodson (a Charles Co, MD/Fairfax Co, Va name?), G W Dodson (a son?), Catherine Dodson (a daughter?), John Dodson, Mariah Dodson (a daughter), Coleman Dodson (a Halifax/Pittsylvania Co, Va name. Son of Presley Dodson. According to Dodson book, Coleman was in AL at this time. He was obviously back in Wilkes Co for the estate sale). The non-Dodson surname purchasers were: Robert B Smilie(?), Ebeneezer Smith, Charles Terrell, Wm L. Weems, Thomas Harris, James Huling, James Davis, Isreal(?) James(?), Wm Hoff, Henry Brook, John Wilkerson, Edward B Thomas, Thomas Marlow, Thomas Marler, R J Willis, James Crews, David Uptingraft, Thomas Burroughs, E B Thomas, Shadrach Plant, John M Hanson, John Mills, Joshua Holmes, Solomon Arnold, Richard Hudspeth, Simpson Williams, Wm Carrington, Hezekiah R Elgin, James Walker, Gideon Rucker. R J Willis and John Wilkerson divided the slave property among the heirs (1825). William Weans and Marcus Roby were witnesses to the Will of Ignatius written in Dec 1816. There are no Dodsons on Wilkes Co Ga Tax List of 1806 or earlier. Wilkes Co Ga Tax list 1809 Ignatius Dodson District gi Presley Dodson District hn William Dodson District rv Wilkes Co, Ga Tax List 1816 Charles Dodson District jo Ignatius Dodson District jo Washington District jo John District sa Ignatius and Cloe had a son, Thomas Ignatius. I have no information on Thomas Ignatius to know his age. There WERE minor children in the Ignatius and Cloe household. Thomas Dodson who married Cloe Bates did so in 1798 (unless the Dodson book is incorrect. I have not checked other sources) There is a deed dated 1796 in Charles Co, MD where Ignatius and Cloe Dodson and others of Charles Co, MD sell their interest in Walter Dodson, deceased's land called Sarcum in Charles Co, MD. So, assuming the Thomas Dodson and Cloe Bates marriage is correct, there was ANOTHER Dodson, Ignatius, who married a CLOE and lived in MD. This is getting confusing! I see clues leading us to Charles Co, MD and Fairfax Co, Va THEN I see the Pittsylvania Co people involved! Makes me think there is a connection between the two. Any comments? How about this- Here is a list of the slave property that was divided among Ignatius and Cloe's children. Dos anyone recognize these slaves? Might they have been inherited by Ignatius from a parent? The slaves were divided into (approximately) 8 equal lots on Jan 10, 1825. The children then drew numbers to see which lot they receieved as their share of the slave property. There were provisons in the drawing to give monetary supplements to make all children totally equal. Lot 1-Sam (463), Gracey and child Malinda(380)=843 Lot 2-Frank (500), Mariah (360)=860 Lot 3-Nace (500), John (160)=660 Lot 4-Hezekiah(500), Rhode(150), George(125)=775 Lot 5-Henry(400), Richard(150), Roger(150), Sarah(100)=800 Lot 6-Cecelia and child Jack (400), Winley (300), William (135)=835 Lot 7-Selvy & twins Peter and Mary(450),Amanda(115),Eliza(225)=790 Lot 8-Matilda abd child Tom(400),Priscilla(50),Celia(150),Minty(135)=735 Lot-1 Catharine Dodson Lot-2 Thomas Ignatius Dodson Lot-3 Charles Terrell Lot-4 Chloe Ann Dodson Lot-5 George W. Hello Fellow Researchers, I am looking for information on John Dodson who died in 1735 in Charles Co., MD. I don't know anything about him except that he had a wife named Leaticia and sons named John and Walter and a daughter named Frances who married Allen Hewton. I understand from another Dodson researcher, Michelle Ule, that some information has been posted on this list about a Charles Dodson born about 1649 in Virginia or England. Does anyone have information about this Charles? Could he have had a brother, John, who migrated to Maryland? Thanks, Daniela

Sandra, I'm interested in where you got info. that Charles Dodson, Sr. married Ann ELMORE. The Dodson book does not give that info. Others have stated here maiden name was Dodson also and that her father was a Benjamine Dodson. An Ann Dodson was given a legacy by her father, Benjamine Dodson. Whether this is our "Ann Dodson" or not, I do not know. Also you list Charles Dodson, Jr. as married to Anne STONE. Where did you get this? A man who lives here in Springfield, MO--Robert H. Stone, has written 3 books on the Stone Family. He might have more on a possible Stone connection if there is one. I have a Sarah Ann Stone who married Andrew Woolverton, one of my ancestors in another line. I've been trying to track her ancestry. This Anne Stone is not listed in the Dodson book either. Hope to hear your sources. Glenn Gohr 1040 E. McCanse St. Springfield, MO 65803-3613
---------- James Harmon <jharmon@earthlink.net> There isn't much in the book on Rhoda Dodson Creel and what information is in the book is not known for sure so here's a quote from "The Dodson (Dotson) Family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, VA, Vol I" "Rhoda Dodson Creel (Thos, Thos, Chas). The places and dates of Rhoda's birth, marriage and death are unknown. She was PROBABLY born and married in Fauquier Co., VA. She and her husband both joined Broad Run Baptist Church in Dec 1762. They moved to the Halifax/Pittsylvania Co. area with her father, Thomas Dodson. It is said that John Creel was killed in an accident in 1792. " The children of Rhoda and John Creel were: Thomas Creel - married #83 Phebe Creel, daughter of #22 Joshua Dodson. John Creel - married #212 Margaret Dodson, daughter of #68 Lazarus Dodson. She married Thomas Creel in either VA or Surry Co., NC prior to 1786 (when Thomas "Kreel" is referred to as son-in-law of Joshua Dodson on a road jury.) Thomas was the son of John and Rhoda Dodson Creel. He was born in VA and died in 1805 according to family information (though this is questionable as it is said he was present at the marriage of his daughter in 1807, Warren Co., KY). Phebe died in 1826, probably in Allen Co., KY. Phebe and Thomas Creel lived in Surry Co., NC, Pendleton District, SC, Oglethorpe and/or Clarke Co., GA and in Warren/Allen Co., KY. Children, as given in The Stamps Family History and Lineage, by Wm T Stamps: Nancy Creel (Dodson) - b. 24 July 1785., m. (this is the date given in the Stamps book which is obviously an error) Joel Creel - b. c1805 in GA. Married in 1850, Elizabeth unknown. Whew! No wonder you're confused as to who married whom. Will try to find time on Mon or Tues to add all of this to BK plus others in the book and add it to web page. It was easier to tell you what is in the book instead of trying to correct the info you posted to list. Hope you aren't even more confused. Alley Blackford (Dodson List Mgr) wchs@prodigy.net
Alley, On your chart, #1 Charles Dodson, I see you now list his wife as Ann ELMORE. Where did you get her last name? See chart at: http://pages.prodigy.net/wchs/dod.html I know that the Dodson Book, p. 1435 mentions a deed in 1693 in Richmond Co., VA where Charles Dodson gives son Thomas Dodson a brown cow called Nancy in exchange for a sow shoat given him "by his godfather Peter Elmore." This is not enough proof to show that Ann's maiden name was Elmore. Other references list her maiden name as "Dodson" and show her as a dau. of a Benjamine Dodson. Reportedly Benjamine Dodson granted Ann a legacy in Virginia. I have a little more info. on this. Not sure if I can accept her maiden name as Dodson, though, either. There could be another Ann Dodson who was single at the time of receiving a legacy from Benjamine. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

Hi to All, Have just updated the Dodson page on my web site. Would really appreciate knowing if there are errors. The page is quite lengthy, equal to about 19 pages according to Brothers Keeper. You may want to 'save' and read offline. http://pages.prodigy.net/wchs "Shenandoah Ancestry" Scroll to bottom of page to link to Dodson page. Dodson page begins with Charles Dodson, Sr of North Farnham Parish. Page includes all branches, not just those of my direct line. As time permits, I will add more information from the book on Dodsons of North Farnham Parish. Alley Blackford (Dodson List Mgr) wchs@prodigy.net

Dear Michelle, I too am interested in your papers on the SMOOT and DODSON lines. Mine lived side by side in Charles Co., Maryland in the late 1600s to the mid-1700s and are related through marriage. The SMOOTs go back to William SMOOT who died in 1668 in St. Mary's Co., MD (before Charles became a county) and his descendants who settled in Charles. The DODSONs go back to John Dodson who appeared in Charles Co. records in the early 1700s and died there in 1735. The SMOOT line spreads out into Virginia and my branch of the DODSON line appeared in Bedford Co., VA in the mid-1750s. You your DODSONs and SMOOTs relate to any Maryland families? Sincerely, Daniela

Connie, At the time I wrote the e-mail to Glenn, I didn't know that merely signing that oath of allegiance was qualifying for DAR. I thought they had to DO something to show evidence as a patriot. For that reason, when I was at the DAR Library in Washington D. C. this summer, I went hunting in their books to determine WHAT my specific ancestors did to warrant patriotic service. I descend from 7 or 8 of these guys and I was simply curious if any of them had been a soldier (only one, maybe two). Glenn put me straight concerning the oath, but not before I found the notes about the two Thomas Dodsons. The section of Pittsylvania County where the Dodsons lived on Birch Creek, is in the southeast corner not far from Halifax County--the river runs right through it. In cruising the net last night I found two Thomas Dodsons listed as paying taxes in Halifax county in 1785; obviously the county lines were more flexible then than they are now. For that reason, I'm accepting what I found about Thomas Dodsons providing material for the war effort from, at least, Halifax courthouse during the Revolution. I'm a writer, I'm looking for the stories, and so learning my ancestors supplied brandy to the troops, was satisfying to my curiousity! And I'm not a member of the DAR. Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA
Michelle and Glenn, I am a descendant of Thomas III "2nd Fork" Dodson and have in my files DAR papers showing that "he signed the Oath of Allegiance along with his son-in-law (Moses Hanks) in 1777 as attested to by the County Clerk of Pittyslvania Co, Va." No mention in these papers of his providing supplies. I descend from Thomas III through his daughter, Betty, who m. David Dodson. They settled in Maury Co Tn with the Hanks and other Dodson families. Any information on Betty and David Dodson would be appreciated. Connie Ausec
I'm trying to find out the parents of my great grandfather - his name was John E. J. Dodson and he was born in, I think, Halifax Co. VA in 1841 (the date is correct). My grandfather's name was Clifton H. Dodson and he was born 9-19-1876 in Norfolk, VA. Does this ring a bell with any of you other Dodson researchers? Dee Dodson Sammis
