    2. Greetings, Over on the Neville line we're experimenting with sending maps over e-mail. I have a couple maps pertinent to the Dodson family and would be happy to send them as well to you. They are Fauquier County 1759 (rivers and runs), Pittsylvania/Halifax County about the time of the Revolution (Birch Creek is in the southeast corner of Pittsylvania running into Halifax--that's where the Thomas Dodsons lived) and a couple early Virginia maps mostly delineating where the counties were in, say, 1668. To access them (and I'm no Bill Gates, computer wizard), you download the file and then pull it up in something that will read graphics, Microsoft Works in our case. The maps printed out just fine and with Microsoft Works we were even able to adjust the size. I can't advise beyond these directions, however, so proceed with caution! Happy Thanksgiving, Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA

    3. Hi Alley, If you're talking about the two-volume DODSON books I did look-ups in for you and then you purchased, it is by Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas Jr. in conjunction with Mrs Williams. A small part of his original book on Dodson genealogy begins on page 1553. It was published in 1959. I have a copy if you need me to check anything in it for you. Monya >I haven't seen the book by Rev. Lucas. The book on the DODSONs of North >Farnham Parish, VA isn't just on southern lines. It begins with Charles, >Sr. but branches out all over the states. 3. Thank you very much, Russell. I'd like to see proof, also. From the book on Dodsons of North Farnham Parish...........Volume II, Pg vi "A word of warning concerning trying to claim kinship with people with whom we cannot prove a relationship, i.e.: Are we kin to the 'John Dodson, d. 1607" of Jamestown, Virginia, or Benjamin Dodson, c. 1652 of Essex County, Virginia? Some people would like to say that these men are the direct ancestors of Charles Dodson who died in 1701. They state that a John Dodson came with Captain John Smith in 1607 and the John Dodson had sons Jesse and William Dodson. It is further stated that the aforementioned Jesse Dodson was the father of Charles Dodson, born about 1649 and died about 1701, in Richmond Co, VA. Some of these people further state that our Charles Dodson of Richmond Co, VA, married one Anne Dodson, daughter of Benjamin Dodson of Essex Co, VA. Regardless of how much one would like to claim descendancy from these aforementioned Dodsons, it must be stated UNEQUIVOCALLY that NO LEGAL RECORDS exist to prove this hypothetical descendancy of Charles Dodson. Others have said that Gervais Dodson of Northumberland Co, VA, c. 1650, was the progenitor of our family but this also has not been proved." This book by Williams & Lucas gives sources and proof of what is offered to the reader. Where it is questionable as to which Thomas Dodson or whomever did what and when, it is always stated to be just that.......questionable. It's a great book and gives enough facts that the researcher can then further their own research using what is already in the book. My own line was stuck with Jacob Dodson in Shenandoah Co. I had no idea who Jacob's parents were until I bought this book and found Jacob's father, Peter. Now I have my direct line (and others!) all the way back to Charles, Sr. The information I obtained in the book would have taken me years of research so the $70 plus priority shipping I spent has been money well used. I had received information from one lady who sent an email saying that Charles Dodson, Sr. was born in England. Needing to save space on my hard drive, I saved all of my Dodson notes to disk and deleted those on my hard drive. Today I decided to look at all of my notes and the disk is bad. All notes are gone! Disk was full! Notes are deleted from email. That's life! 3. EARLY VIRGINIA BRANCHES Introduction: "The annals of Virginia record the name of a "Dodson Plantation" in 1632. And the traditional story in a large and now widely scattered line of descendants is that their ancestor lived along the James River and was one of the early Jamestown Colony. There is also mention of one John Dodson, who was a "mighty hunter"and "fur trader", and who in his dealings with the Indians became the possessor of large bodies of land. Another John very early found his way to the western side of Virginia to what is now Patrick County, and where his memory is preserved in the name of "Dodson Postoffice", but from which locality he long since pased away, leaving none behind him there of the Dodson name at this day. Descendants of the early Jamestown settler, from the various Virginia families of which traces are known, must have in the latter part of the century of their first settlement moved slowly to the western portions of the State. Among the earliest names positively known by descendants of a widely scattered family, as of the James River of Jamestown ancestors, are William and Jesse, and these most probably of the first or second generation from the original settler, as the following genealogical tables will show. Quite a number settled first in the valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountain region -Shenandoah Valley and others. During the latter part, or about the close of the War of the Revolution a large emigration left this region and settled in Kentucky and Tennessee, and later thence to Ohio, Indiana and Missouri." This is the article copied from the book. I dont thank any one has came up with documentation to prove this. The passenger list list a John Dods. age 36 years, in the Susan Constant, April, 1607. Jane, his wife, aged 40 years. How so many people got from Dods to Dodson I dont know But would like to see proof if their is any.m Russell Dodson

    1. Re:Smoot paper, another Dodson book
    2. 1. Do any of you who read the Smoot/Durham/Hunt paper have anything to say about my outlandish attempts to figure this out? Any additional information I may have missed? 2. The other good book I read while researching the Dodson paper was Shirley Corbari's The Guio-Dodson Family . The book was privately printed about 20 years ago and I read it at the Sutro Library in San Francisco. Shirley wrote the book about her ex-husband's family and has done no further research since then, but she is a gracious lady still living here in the Bay Area. She and I only "shared" Charles and the first two or soThomas Dodsons, but she had good, solid information on those three families. I asked her about the Smoot mess in a letter I wrote her last year; she said the "straight" way I wrote it in the paper is the best she can figure out (but she hasn't looked at this stuff in quite a while). Happy Thanksgiving, Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA
