    3. I know a little about the Dodson Baptists, at least what has been told to me from grandparents. My line comes from Abraham Dodson, who lived in North Farnham, VA abt. 1750. His son was Enoch. Enoch's son, William migrated to Fayette Co, AL. I have read some of the church minutes where the Dodsons were members. They were called primitive Baptist. They were very strict & followed the Bible to the letter. They traveled in their wagons or by foot to church & would stay all day, listening to preaching, singing & eating lunch together. They would put the children in the wagons for naps. They did not believe in dancing, drinking, "cussing" or being unfaithful to their spouse. When a member did any of these things, the deacons would go to the person, confront him or her about their sin. They were expected to repent & walk the straight & narrow way. If the sin continued, the church would withdraw fellowship from the individual. My William Dodson, mentioned above, continued to yield to the temptation of sin, and was excluded from the church. His wife continued to go to church & take her children. In the primitive Baptist churches, men could preach if they felt the call from God to do so. Therefore, many of the men in the congregation did preach. My gg grandfather, John S. Jones (son-in-law of William Dodson) preached some in this type of Baptist church. They also believed in foot washing. This was taken from the story in the Bible where Jesus washed the disciples feet. They washed one another's feet to show humbleness and their willingness to serve their fellow man. Being Baptist, they also believed in baptism, usually in the nearest creek or river. I would guess that these traditions that I know of in the 1800-1900's were passed down from the earlier Dodsons. Being Baptist myself, these stories have been very interesting to me. I hope this might give you some insight to their beliefs.

    3. We've all had to deal with the challenge of first cousin marriages, etc., but here's a bit of genealogy humor that really drives the point home... Many, many years ago when I was thirty-three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter Who had lovely hair of red. My father fell in love with her, And soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my entire life. My daughter was my mother, For she was my father's wife. To complicate the matters worse, Although it brought me joy, I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle, Though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up daughter Who, of course, was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son Who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson, For he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother And that makes me very blue. Because, although she is my wife, She's my grandmother too! If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of that, It simply drives me wild. For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw. As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa. Hope everyone has a great Holiday Season!! Gene Ray

    3. Searching for ancestors of James Anthony DODSON Most of the following information is what grandmother, Pernetta "Pernie" Martin DODSON at age 85 in 1965 remembered. She lived to be 104! Her recollections were recorded by her daughter Mary Dodson Fuller. James Anthony DODSON b. Aug 27, 1853 in Westmoreland, Putnam County TN; m. Mary Susan BALL (purposted to be of Ball Mason jar family). (Had brothers Joe and Tommy (dates unk) and half brother Coleman "Coby" who died of typhoid fever, Coby had a son Clarence.) d. c. 1906 at about age 50; buried in Still Grave Yard Bowling Green, KY Had brothers Joe and Tommy DODSON (dates unk) and half brother Coleman "Coby" who died of typhoid fever, Coby had a son Clarence. In 1880 census for SUMNER Country his occupation was "working at mill". James & Mary's known children were: 1. Blanch Ellen DODSON b. 12 Oct, 1870 (1880 census lists her age as 4!)Married PASHAL 2. James William DODSON, b. 12 Feb 1878 in Sumner County TN (1880 census does not list him) married Pernetta Isabelle MARTIN Nov 27, 1907 in Gallatin, Sumner County TN. Said his father's family came from NC or VA. (Believe his *mother* was from NC.) He also said they were of Dutch descent (Most likely on his father's maternal side) 3. Norah Alice, married DEARING. 4. Wiley Leslie b. Oct 18, 1884, d. Dec 22, 1944. Pernie also said the burying ground for the Dodson family was in either ULA or WESTMORELAND. Could not find Ula TN in the Delorme Atlas. I'm trying to find out where we connect to the Virginia DODSONs about whom I see so very much on this list, but have had no luck. Can someone tell me how to go from here? Thank-you very much, Gerie Dodson-Smith Winterport, Maine Pernie also said the burying ground for the dodson family was in either ULA or WESTMORELAND. 2. Robert Ule
    3. Pax Pooh-- Jesse and Elisha Dodsons probably were ministers in the Primitive Baptist Church, since that's where their relation, Rev. Thomas Hanks (b. 1786 Pittsylvania County, VA) ministered. His grandfather Thomas Dodson, along with several members of his family, helped found the Broad Run Baptist church outside of what is now Warrenton, VA (Fauquier County) in 1762. The family moved en masse south to Pittsylvania County in 1765. There were a lot of Primitive Baptists in the family. Thomas Hanks owned slaves and lots of land as well as being a well known missionary in the church. Your ancestors probably farmed and led meetings "on the side"--being a pastor probably wasn't the major money-earning thing they did. But that doesn't mean being a minister wasn't the focal point of their lives. Thomas Hanks' brother, Elijah Hanks, was a well known minister in Maury County, TN for a very long time and wrote a memoir about his life. I'm still doing research on the Primitive Baptists, that's all I have off the top of my head. The names of your family members are familiar, but I haven't time right now to check the Dodsons of North Farnham yet. Hope this helps, Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA

    3. I notice that there are a lot of Elisha Dodson's mentioned, but has anyone found an Elija Dotson? He married an Emiily Stiles from Indiana. Elija was born in 1836 in Kentucky and Emily was born in 1838. Their children and their birthdates are as follows: William Dotson -- 1859 in Indiana Mary Dotson -- 1862 in Indiana Ella Dotson -- 1865 in Indiana James Coleman Dotson -- 1867 in Indiana ( My G-G-Grandfather) Alva Dotson -- 1871 in Indiana (a Twin) Christina Dotson -- 1871 in Indiana (a Twin) If anyone can help me out, please get back to me. I got all of this information off a census dated June 28, 1880 in the County of Fountain, Town of Richland and I am assuming that it is in the State of Indiana since there is not one listed. 3. I had to laugh about your comment of intermarriage. My father's family (Dotson) has a lot of intermarriage with my mother's family. Including My Dad's Uncle marrying my Mom's sister. After he died, she married my Dad's brother. My mom's brother married my dad's cousin. My Dad's sister married 'my' sister's husband brother.
