Hi, I mentioned earlier that I have 3 George Dodsons all in a row originating from VA. My most recent George Dodson married Martha Lockhart in Patrick Co VA about 1796. Went to Wayne Co KY and on to Boone Co In about 1828. Martha was in Vermilion Co IL on 1850 census. His father was also George Dodson--there were several. Their children were: Elizabeth, Nancy, Margaret, Irena, George, Martha, Ruel, John, Mary, Judah, Robert, and Jemima, this from an article by Kenneth Dodson. George was ordained a Baptist minister in Wayne Co Ky. He was instrumental in organizing the Eagle Creek Baptist Church in Boone Co IN. A list of cemetery readings on file at Sullivan Museum,Zionsville IN lists Dodson at Eagle Cemetery: Rev George--minister of the Regular Batist Church; d 9/8/1845(4?), age about 70 yrs. Thomas; d 6/21/1883; age 86/2/26. Benjamin D. son of Thomas & mary d 12/24/183(?)6; age 6/1/0; James, son or Robt & Mary, b. 1/4/1854; d. 4/5/1874; age 20/3/5; Bethana, dau. of Robt & Mary, b. 1/2/1863; age ?/10/4; Infant daughter; or Robt & Mary; d 12/27/1856; Mary, wife of Robert dodson, d 12/27/1888(?); age 71/7/0; Robert, d 10/12/1892; age 74/4/0; Polly, wife of Thamas Dodson, d 8/15/1872; age 75/5/12. HHope that this is of some interest to another Dodson researcher. Some of these Dodsons eventually came to Vermilion Co IL and some stayed there. Hi, I know how difficult it is to trace George Dodson. I have 3 in my line. The most recent was George Dodson III, born ca 1776 in VA He married Martha Lockhart in Patrick Co VA ca 1790 ( I have the date somewhere)and they moved with other Dodsons and Lockharts to Wayne Co Ky. There he was ordained a Baptist minister. About 1828 they relocated to Boone Hendricks Co IN where he was instrumental in establishing Eagle Creek Baptist Church where he is believed to be buried. This is just NW of Indianapolis where there are several Dodsons. George & Martha had many children, nieces and nephews who stayed in KY, and some moved westward. I suspect that your George might be a nephew or son?? Martha was living in Vermilion Co IL in 1850 with her son Ruel Dodson, also a Baptist minister. If your George is related to mine also look for neighbors with surnames Lockhart, Powell as they migrated together and intermarried.I have more info on this branch. Carri My George DODSON sighed permission in December 18, 1857, at Bracken County, Kentucky, for his daughter Mary Jane to marry Geo. Hitt. Is your George Dodson in the area. I would love to have any information you might have. Thank you. I also have sat and read this list, and there seems to be so much good information going back and forth. You are all doing great. It's a good list with lots of action. But I have to say that I feel like an orphan. No one seems to know my Dodson Ancestor, George Dodson. I have to admit that I don't either, as I have never found anything but his signature on a marriage permission for his daughter Mary Jane to marry George Hitt in Bracken Co, KY in 1857. I have done much research in this area each summer and have found many good records in Bracken Co, KY and surrounding area. Not as good as Maryland or Virginia records, but pretty good. I have the line of Hitt back to the 1714 immigrant and beyond, and in many of our lines from this area, we have had great luck and success. We have been doing research since 1980 and have had great fun. But Dodson is one of my orphan lines. So many of our ancestors in Mason, Bracken Co, KY were originally from VA, that I just feel that George's ancestors have been talked about on this list, but I cannot connect. Can anyone give me advice as to how to research my George Dodson? If only I had found a George with a young Mary or Mary Jane in census records, but I haven't even had that much luck. Thank you. Alley, And others on the list-- Did you receive the e-mail I sent originally about a week ago (and resent to Alley last night) about information found in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 23 (1915), pp. 11-12 ?? This quoted from minutes of the council and general court of Jamestown and mentioned a John Dodson briefly. Still no hard & fast evidence to tie him in to Charles Dodson of N. Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org On Fri, 23 Jan 1998, WCHS wrote: > From Alley wchs@prodigy.net > > Ancestry just added this tonight. Dear Dodson cousins, I have been a member of this list for almost a year now and have had not any luck finding anything on my Dodson ancestors. I see tons of data weekly about all the Dodsons back in the 1700 and early 1800', but unfortunately I can't seem to get back any further than 1853. Would someone please be so kind as to give me some hints on how to go back further? It obviously has been done by most of you. It's not that I'm totally new at this, I've trace one of my husband's and one of my lines back to the Mayflower. Nonetheless, I'm at a standstill. I seem to think that my problem might be that, unlike the New England states which have records going back quite a ways, TN and KY do not. I've been to the National Archives in Washington and found nothing much in census return more than I already knew. My living in Maine makes a trip to TN & KY a challenge. An Aunt who lived in Indiana looked for the gravesites and that's where we found the birthdate for our earliest know Dodson, i. e. James Anthony Dodson, who was in the 1880 Sumner county census with his wife Mary S.(usan Ball) and daughter Blanch. James had two brothers, Joseph & Thomas. The family grave yard is believed to be in either Westmoreland or Ula TN. James is not buried there as he moved to Warren County, KY and died there in 1907. KY has no death records before 1911! Can someone PLEASE help me. I'm desperate and frustrated. Thank-you, Gerie Dodson-Smith
I found a few discrepancies with my data and I'd like to find out which is correct. Please respond if you can give me the correct information and the source. 1) I noticed that you have a Charles I. Dodson listed as being born in England. However, his father was born in Richmond County, VA. Do you know if this is correct? Also, could it be Charles Dodson I (indicating he was the first)? 2) You have the date of death as 06 Feb 1704/05. Can anyone confirm this? I have the date of death as occurring before this date rather than on this date. 3) You have Mary Durham Dodson's date of death as 21 Nov 1740. However, I show that a Mary Durham married a Robert Galbreath/Galbraith on 29 Sep 1743. Does anyone know who this Mary Durham is? 4) I show Margaret Dagord's date of birth as 30 Apr 1708 and you have it as 10 Apr 1708. Can someone confirm which is correct? 5) You show that the mother of Margaret Dagord was Judith Hunt. Is this the same Judith Hunt who married Henry Durham? Steve Smoot
Fortunately or unfortunately (no pun intended), this particular name was used by several Dodsons - here's mine: Fortunatus Dodson was born ca 1771 in VA and died in 1864 in Carrollville, TN. His father was probably David Dodson (1740-1816) and his mother was probably Elizabeth Dodson (1745-1820). Fortunatus married Frances Hanks on 23 Sep 1793 in Halifax Co., VA. They probably had the following children: David, Fortunatus (yes, another one!), Elisha Fortunatus, and Elijah. I am in hopes they also had a daughter by the name of Sarah, but I have never seen any reference to that except in my family tradition. -Richard- rbrooksa@pacifier.com ------------------------------------------------------- Education is what you get when you read the fine print; Experience is what you get when you don't! -------------------------------------------------------
