I just added this page to my web site for the volunteers. http://pages.prodigy.net/wchs/volunteer.html So far, there are only TWO of us. Thank you very much, Glenn! Alley wchs@prodigy.net
Alley, I can volunteer for two lines of William and Alice (Dodson) Creel and Thomas and Elizabeth (Rose) Dodson. Alice and Thomas being the children of Thomas and Mary (Durham) Dodson. As for a particular area, since I live in Atlanta, anyone needing look-ups in Georgia, I can do. (FYI- Atlanta is home to the Southeastern Nationa Archives with has all the original W.W.I draft cards for the US). Kim Pullon SPullon@aol
Michelle, Thank you so much for all of this! Don't know if Rev Hill at age 60 produced any children but in my own branch, my Jacob Dodson kept right on having children into his 70's and there is proof. He married for the 2nd time to a much younger woman. From memory, I believe he was around age 74 when the last child was born. Would you give me Bill's phone number?? John Mayhew, Annapolis, MD jmayhew050@aol.com
Ren, Jim, anyone else interested in our question "to Whom did Mary Neville give her hand in marriage?" from last fall, At Glenn Gohr's suggestion, I phoned Bill Randolph, the Dodson/Hanks genealogy marvel in his 70's. I asked about Mary Neville and her mate, and he told me hands down it was Thomas Dodson Jr. (Mary and Thomas Second Fork Dodson's daughter was Aggatha who married Moses Hanks) Rattling off dates and names faster than I could scribble "William and Mary Quarterly", he told me the infamous 1790 deposition in Hardy County was in reference to land Thomas "Second Fork" Dodson had purchased in Fauquier County from the Lord Fairfax estates. (I've just gotten to that part in the Virginia history I'm reading. Lord Fairfax owned some 5.5 MILLION acres of land in VA--gift from a king!) Bill believed (this was off the top of his head), that Thomas SF was involved in a land dispute with Reverend DeButts (an Anglican minister) over some boundaries. He said "Second Fork" had a lot of land (Bill thought it was 1200 acres in this transaction) and gave it away to various kids before he left for Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties in about 1767. He told me he knew some of this from Frank D. Fuller's notes on Elias Dodson's manuscript. I've not seen any of this, but he assumed I had. He thought they were in the TN State Library and Archives. He, of course, recommended we check the originals on the deposition which he thought would be in Hardy County records. I wonder why I didn't think of that. Among other things he told me in a delightful 30 minute conversation, was that Sr. and Jr. didn't necessarily mean the two men were related to each other. Sometimes the designation was made just to differentiate between an older and younger man of the same name in the neighborhood, whether they were related or not. Bill said the Dodsons were originally in the Hamilton Parish in Fauquier County but then someone (Cornwall?) went up north and got a Baptist Preacher. You'll remember they founded Broad Run Baptist Church there near Warrenton. In regard to Second Fork going to Pittsylvania county "under censure", Bill said that usually meant getting drunk, cursing or working on the sabbath. For those of you who have Hills in your Hanks line, he broke the news he doesn't really think Rev. Thomas Hanks' wife Sarah was really a Hill. (Her alleged father, Rev. Thomas Hill, would have been nearly 60 at her birth) and maybe not even a Hamlin (the believed name of her mother). Then again . . . maybe change of life? After my latest problem with the Lewis line, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm related to ANYONE I think I'm related to (are you still out there, Dad?!). Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA
Hello everyone, This was posted to the GRAINGER CO-List. I'm posting it here because of the mention of Rachel ( Groves ) DODSON and her daughter, Temperance. Kathleen Mazil kmazil@ix.netcom.com Ross Cameron wrote: The name of one of my great, great grandfather James Cameron's step-daughters, a daughter of his second wife, Mrs. Rachel (Groves) Dodson, was given as Tempy in the first records I found on her. I did not know that this was a nickname until I found her as Temperance in other records. So in case it wasn't obvious to you either, Tempa or Tempy is a nickname for Temperance which was not an uncommon 19th century name and nickname. I had not noticed the name until I found it in my family. Now I've seen it several times. Ross Cameron
Hi Kathleen and All, Many thanks for posting Diana Flynn's submission of Isham Burnett's Will! I have pasted it into my notes for him. Is the name of Isham's first wife known? For his children who married Dodsons, does anyone know which Dodsons they are? Regards, Karen Trouvat
I am looking for information on Charlie C. Dodson. He was my great-grandfather. He was married to Hannah Johnson in MO. Does the name sound familar to anyone? I have not gotten back to the state to check on anything. I do know that he was buried in Mexico, MO. Thank you. Kathy (Chapman) Crouch kcrouch@eazy.net
I believed that George Dodson in Mason Co, KY who married Ellen Curtis was related to and maybe the son of Omar Dodson of Mason Co. But your list show that James was his father. It has been awhile since I researched this George, since I could not find him with a daughter Mary Jane. I had hoped to find my Mary Jane Dodson with this George Dodson in the 1850 census, but she was not there. He is the only George Dodson that I could find anywhere in the area. My Mary Jane was born ca 1838, so she is the right age to be his daughter, but PROOF is missing. Do you have any more information on this George Dodson? Also, I wondered why Marshall signed for Pamela Ellen Curtis to marry George instead of her father. Was he already gone? Rosy I have one Dodson. Mary Dodson b. Dec 17, 1755. "My mother was born in Mariland, right across the Potomac River, where the seat of war was in this last struggle. m. William RIGGS b.3-12-1750 "My father was born in Old Virginia near the Potomac River near Harper's Ferry. They moved to Washington CO. PA.,ca. 1773. Let me know if you can connect my Mary to her family or if you have a clue. I don't expect it, just hopeful. Jill
Alley & others: Yes, I can see that you need 1 person to keep track of who is in charge of which line. That would be a job in itself, and it is obvious that you, Alley, are plenty busy already. I think we need volunteers not only for particular lines, but also for a particular county of interest. Many unplaced Dodsons are out there, but those researching our own lines may have knowledge of other Dodsons living in a certain county. I'd suggest that you list the volunteers/resource people on your website to make easy access to the listing of who is volunteering for what. And if that gets to be too much, then at least list the e-mail address of the person coordinating the list of volunteers, etc. I am willing to volunteer for the family line of 2nd Fork Thomas Dodson: Thomas Dodson (Second Fork), b. 3 Oct. 1728 Richmond Co., VA, d. 1811 Hawkins Co., TN; md. 1st, ca. 1746? to a daughter of Lame George Dodson???; 2nd, ca. 1748 VA to Mary Neville, b. ca. 1730 VA, d. aft. 1790 TN Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

We have well over 100 subscribers to the DODSON mailing list at this time. I need your help. Due to my web page and this mailing list I am now getting many requests for help from DODSON researchers. I am trying to maintain my web pages, this and other mailing lists and continuing my research for DODSON and many other lines. I can no longer keep up with it all. On another mailing list I subscribe to, the list manager has volunteers to do one particular part of a line and it looks like it's working for all. A lot more people can get help and it also helps those whose lines match to find one another. I would like to copy that idea for the DODSON mailing list. To get this started we need to send our particulars so that others will see them. Give enough information with dates, counties, wives and children so that anyone can look at the info and know they can help with that line. I don't have any resources for DODSON info other than the DODSON book by Rev. Lucas and my own research for Shenandoah Co, VA. I am not an expert on DODSON research. In fact, I'm quite new at this. If you think this is a good idea then please post with an appropriate subject when replying. "DODSON/my line" might grab everyone's attention. If you choose to volunteer then everyone needs to know who the volunteer is for a particular branch. Therefore, I am also asking for someone to volunteer to keep a record of volunteers for the different branches. Two volunteers would be nice so that if one were unable to keep up with the list due to vacation time or an illness the other would still be available. We could have more than one volunteer for the branches who are heavy with requests. Then no one would be overwhelmed with helping others. I've enjoyed helping everyone but I just no longer have time to do look ups in the DODSON book for all branches of the DODSON line, for all states having DODSON, for all counties having DODSON and the many years. I will gladly help anyone needing information on the DODSON line in Shenandoah County, VA as I have the resources and it's my own branch. What do you think about this? Majority agreeable to this? If so, please start posting with your branch, giving as much info as possible. For all of you who have written to me in the past two weeks, your mail is still sitting in my mail box and as soon as I can I will reply. I will get the DODSON News page and DODSON Puzzle page updated this week, I hope!!! For those who are new to DODSON mailing list I have a web page for DODSON which begins with Charles DODSON, Sr of North Farnham Parish and it includes many branches. The page is updated infrequently but if I can get some volunteers it may be updated frequently once again. http://pages.prodigy.net/wchs "Shenandoah Ancestry" Scroll to bottom of page and click on "DODSON Ancestry" or "DODSON News" From "DODSON News" page you will find a link to the "DODSON Puzzle" page. Regards, Karen Trouvat Yes, Karen, one in the same. Silas Lucas' book says no one has found record of Fortunatus and Frances' children but gives some assumptions. Adin Baber's book The Hanks Family of VA etc., lists no children at all. The Genealogy of the Hanks and allied Families by Gladys Hanks Johnson says, that Fortunatus already had a large family when he married Frances and doesn't list them, but also says that it was not known if Fortunatus and Frances ever had any children. I find this interesting in that Fortunatus would have only been 22 years old when he married Frances, so I don't see how he could have already had a large family ?!! -Richard- rbrooksa@pacifier.com ------------------------------------------------------- Education is what you get when you read the fine print; Experience is what you get when you don't! -------------------------------------------------------
