Kathleen, Thanks for all the good info. on Dodson items at the TN State Library & Archives. At present I am interested in the Frank Fuller items as he was the premier Dodson researcher before Rev. S. E. Lucas, Jr. began publishing books on the Dodsons. We are having trouble PROVING that 2nd Fork Thomas Dodson married Mary Neville, daughter of Joseph Neville, Sr. Also there are questions about 2nd Fork Thomas's first wife. She is listed only in the Rev. Elias Dodson manuscript, and the 2 children seem to have been born when he was very young. We have no record of what happened to them & we wonder if maybe there is an error and that maybe he only had one wife. We are hoping that Frank Fuller's notes will contain some documentary evidence to prove the tie in to the Neville family. Michelle Ule has been working the hardest on this connection. Also, regarding Dodson holdings at the TN State Library & Archives, I believe you missed one: Microfilm holdings: #475 Genealogical Data. Dodson Family, ca. 1780-1940. ca. 1,000 items. 1 reel. Genealogical data on the Dodson family of Tennessee and other states, compiled from collections in the Manuscripts Section of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Sources include the Thomas J. Barnes Papers of the Tennessee Historical Society, a Dodson family Bible record, the Caroline C. Crockett Papers, McMinn County cemetery records, the Jill K. Garrett Collection, the Rebekah Senter Collection, and the Emma Sloan Collection. This info. comes from a sourcebook: GUIDE TO THE MICROFILM HOLDINGS OF THE MANUSCRIPTS SECTION, TENNESSEE STATE LIBRARY & ARCHIVES. 2nd ed. 1975. I believe this sourcebook has been revised. The address I have is: Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 Seventh Ave. North Nashville, TN 37219 The above microfilm is available on interlibrary loan, and I viewed it about 15 yrs. ago. It has original letters written by Frank Fuller, Emma Sloan, Rebekah Senter, and others. Some of the information contained on the fill has now (many years later) been proven false. But it is interesting to see all the research information that has been preserved. It also shows a search to try to locate Charles Dodson's parentage, etc., but with no luck at that time. Gervase Dodson and some other early Dodsons are mentioned that have yet to be linked up. Most of the info. on the film is contained in the 2-vol. Dodson book by Rev. S. E. Lucas (1988), but if you are interested in Dodsons in VA & TN (& a few other states), you might want to order the above microfilm by interlibrary loan. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org

Dear Glenn, Catherine Gaffin LYNN's book is available through interlibrary loan. I don't know if it is still available for purchase. It's a lovely book, unfortunately, my ancestors aren't in it. I'm looking for Sampson DODSON/DOTSON b. c1787 VA>TN, settled in Crawford Co., MO during the 1840's with his wife, Ruth SELLERS b. c1797 NC I've listed, below, "DODSON" holdings in the Tennessee State Library. I thought perhaps someone would be able to tell us more about them. One note: If a book is unavailable to loan, you may request certain pages to be copied for you. Glenn, I have a copy of "The Smoots of Maryland and Virginia" by Harry Wright Newman. As listed in the following book, on p. 7: Lynn, Catherine Gaffin. THE DODSON FAMILY OF WARREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE AND ALLIED FAMILIES. C. 1974 by the author. Exact quote (including Upper Case letters): "REV JESSE DODSON'S grandfather was THOMAS DODSON and his grandmother was MARY DURHAM (Tyler's Quarterly, Vol. 24 and Va. Gen. Mag., Vol. 2, p. 3 - MARY was daughter of THOMAS and DOROTHY SMOOT DURHAM. THOMAS was a son of HENRY and JUDITH HUNT DURHAM. JUDITH was a daughter of GOV. RICHARD HUNT and wife FRANCES of Bermuda). His great-grandparents were CHARLES and ANNE DODSON of Old Rappahannock CO., VA. Further information on this family can be found in SUPPLEMENT TO THE HISTORY OF THE DODSON-DOTSON FAMILY OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, compiled by Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., 1966, Georgia." Questions: 1) I do not have Tyler's Quarterly available. The source above only says vol. 24, but with no page #. Hopefully there is an index. Can anyone find the source in Tyler's Quarterly to see just what it actually says?? 2) The second reference is also obscure. What is the full title of the publication? Is it THE VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST? Or is it the VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF BIOGRAPHY AND HISTORY? Or what???? I've checked in the Va Mag of Biog. & History--not such reference on that vol. & page. Also, neither of these items seem to appear in SWEM'S index to early VA references. 3) Does anyone know Catherine Gaffin Lynn's address? Would love to contact her regarding the above references and also as to what kind of proof she might have for the Durham/Smoot/Hunt connections. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org
Kathleen, Glad to see mention of the book. Is it available on Interlibrary Loan or does your library have it permanently? Is it still available for purchase? I saw this book in the Dallas Public Library I believe back in 1980. I only have a couple pages out of the book, but it brings up MORE questions on the early Dodsons/Durhams/Smoots, etc. The book is also located in the Family History Library at Salt Lake City. I understand that Catherine Gaffin Lynn is still living in Tennessee somewhere & is a devoted member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (I've seen her featured in the DAR Magazine). For those who don't know about this book: Lynn, Catherine Gaffin. THE DODSON FAMILY OF WARREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE AND ALLIED FAMILIES. C. 1974 by the author. The book covers the family of Rev. Jesse Dodson who married Ruth Dodson, a cousin. Rev. Jesse Dodson was b. in Fauquier Co., VA on Nov.. 22, 1752, d. 22 Nov. 1843 in McMinn Co., TN. He is the son of Thomas Dodson and Elizabeth Rose. His wife, Ruth, was a daughter of Jesse's uncle Elisha Dodson and wife Sarah Everett of Pittsylvania Co., VA. There is information on each of the children of Rev. Jesse Dodson and wife Ruth Dodson and their descendants. Related families include Martin, Ramsey, Stone, Garretson, Shell, Curtis, Wharton, Hennessee, McGee, etc. I only have page 1 & p. 7 of this book, so don't contact me for lookups--contact Kathleen Mazil at: kmazil@ix.netcom.com Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org On Wed, 28 Jan 1998, Kathleen Mazil wrote: > Hello everyone, > I just received notice that the book mentioned in the subject > line has arrived at my library. Thank you so very much, Kim!!! I'll get this added to the new Dodson Volunteer page asap. However, I don't think I should post that you'll do look-ups in Atlanta at the archives. This will be seen by many researchers and you'd probably get used and abused. I don't expect you to do research for anyone. Just share what you already have or might find in the future for your own branches. That will keep you busy. If you care to do the additional research for your Dodson branch then that will be for you to decide and I admire your generosity in helping others! Again, thank you so very much! What I want to say now is...isn't Bill Randolph a jewel? We are fifth cousins and he helped me get started on my Dodsons and Nevilles several years ago. Bill comes to this part of Texas to work with some dear friends and relatives several times a year. The last time, I was priviledged to join them with my Fitzgerald line. He gave me a book on the Neville family which takes my line back to John Neville, Sr. born 1612 in England, married to Bridget Thoresby. They are suppose to have come over on the Ark or the Dove. Bill once told me we were eligible to join the Ark and Dove Society. However, it probably would be hard as they are not named on the passenger last. It seems John was a worker for a prominent passenger. This family does tie in with our Dodsons. While I am sending you a message, I might as well tell you, Alley and Glen that while attending a DAR Regent's Council meeting in Tyler recently I sat with a Dodson researcher. She is writing a Dodson book that she has been working on two years. She told me she had spent much time in England and had proof of the father of Charles. Said she had church records and pictures of the church among other items of proof. I gave her my name and address and she promised to send the info. Have been waiting until I received it to pass the word on and will, as soon as it arrives. You are a great group! Liz Pierce
