Hi folks, Need some confirmation here. In my DODSON line I have George DODSON, born 31 Oct 1702, his son David DODSON, born after 1740, David's son Asa DODSON, born 28 May 1780, and Asa's son Thomas DODSON, born 6 Feb 1812. George DODSON's wife was named Margaret DAGOOD. Asa DODSON's wife was named Nancy WOLVERTON. Thomas DODSON's wife was named Catherine Elizabeth GOAD. But for David DODSON's wife, I have Elizabeth DODSON. Is this correct? Did David DODSON and his wife really have the same last name? Or am I reading my records wrong? If they DID have the same last name, can anyone give me the descent/connection on where in the DODSON line she came from? Somebody familiar with the line please let me know. That was the connection I was asking about. Unfortunately I don't know too much more about my g-grandmother other than she was born in Texas, got married in Durant, Ok and died in Port Arthur, Tx. I don't have mother, father or if she had siblings. Hope I am not confusing you. Lynne, I am researching my g-grandmother, Lela DODSON b. Feb. 23, 1883 in Red River Co. Texas. I don't know if that is close to Collin Tx. or not but I thought I would share. Rev. Wm Oscar DODSON lived in and died in Guthrie, Logan co OK, north of OK City. His brother lived for awhile in Perry OK which isn't too far away from Guthrie, I think! Lynne
Collin Co is kind of Northeast I think of Dallas Ft worth area, or North west Lynne
I don't yet know of other siblings of Wm Oscar and Walter T. DODSON. (if that is who you are talking about!) But the timeline would be about the same, ie "Oscar" b 1883. His children were born in Blue Ridge TX Lynne
Did he have a brother Benjamin Franklin? Judy
Did they have a brother named Benjamin Franklin? Please!! Judy
In what co of TN was your Walter born? I know that My DODSON's were in TX by 1883 simply because my William Oscar was born there. He was a preacher, have any of those in your family? I think that Walter T. was born prior to "Oscar". So far my cherokee is not "proove-able". I know that "Oscar's" first 2 wives were of cherokee blood also, the 2nd was full Cherokee. If he went by Oscar I wonder if his Dad wasn't William? You know how that guessing game goes. Thanks for your response and please keep me in mind! Lynne
I would like to coorespond with anyone having DODSON around 1870 in TX, Collin Co, surrounding counties. They may have been there sooner, not sure yet. William Oscar DODSON b feb 1883, brother Walter T. DODSON. These men were 3/4 cherokee. Said to have come to TX from TN, don't know yet when that migration happened. Lynne
Hi Glenn, Robert again. Boy you sure are a repository of information! Thank you very much. I had the DODSON line, but not the WOLVERTONs until now. Robert Williams and all, Regarding the Goad family that intermarried with the Dodson and Hanks families, the local library here in Springfield, Missouri, has an interesting book on the Goads. I am not a Goad descendant, so I am not on the Goad list, but I am forwarding this message to both the Dodson and the Hanks lists and also the Wolverton list as there is some intermarriage there also. The book in our library is: THE GOADS: A PIONEER FAMILY, by Kenneth F. Haas. I do not have the publication data on this book on hand. There are several Goad families listed in early Virginia including Abraham Goad of Richmond County, John Goad of Bedford County, Abraham of Pittsylvania County, Robert os Grayson & Carroll Counties, William of Pittsylvania County. Also Joshua and Abraham Goad, two Rev. War soldiers. Also chapters on Tennessee and Massachusetts and Pennsylvania & Ohio Goads. In Tennessee there are chapters on Abraham Goad of Anderson Co., TN; John Goad of Sullivan Co., TN; William Goad of Rhea Co., TN; Robert Goad of Maury Co., TN. I have photocopied some of the pages regarding the Maury Co., TN Goads as that is where some of the Goads intermarried with my Dodson, Hanks, and Woolverton families. There is also mention of a Caleb Goad in Graves Co., KY who married Elizabeth Dodson, dau. of David and Elizabeth (Dodson) Dodson of Maury Co., TN. Some of the Maury Co., TN Goads also migrated on to Tennessee Colony, Texas where so many other interrelated families settled in Anderson County, such as Harris, Moore, Campbell, Fitzgerald, Hanks, and Woolverton. I also find Goads in this book that moved on to Madison County, Arkansas, where many of my wife's family settled. That is in Northwest Arkansas. Some of my Ledbetters from Maury an McNairy Co., TN also went to Madison Co., AR. Also, I have an interest in the Goads because Rev. Elijah Hanks (son of Moses Hanks and Agatha Dodson) was married to Mary Woolverton. Elijah and Mary had a son, Rev. Thomas Hanks, who moved to Christian County, Missouri (just south of where I live). Rev. Thomas Hanks married Mary GOAD. There are quite a few of these Hanks descendants living in Southwest Missouri. Maybe this information will help someone. I don't believe the book has an index, so it would be difficult to look up anything, unless you need one of the chapters mentioned above which cover the Goad names I mentioned at the beginning of this message. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr (Wolverton & Hanks List Manager on Rootsweb) ggohr01@mail.orion.org
Robert, I have much information on the ancestry of Andrew Woolverton as he is my direct ancestor. I descend from his son, James Matthew Woolverton, who settled in McNairy County, TN. This information is found in Royal Wolverton's book, DESCENDANTS OF ANDREW WOOLVERTON, and in other sources. I also edit a newsletter called WOLVERTONS UNLIMITED which covers the extended Woolverton family and some allied families such as Hanks and Dodson. Here is the Woolverton lineage: 1) Charles Woolverton, b. ca. 1660 prob. Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, d. ca. 1746 Hunterdon Co., NJ; md. ca. 1697 to Mary Chadwick, b. ca. 1674 prob. in VA, d. ca. 1751 Hunterdon Co., NJ 2) Joel Woolverton, b. 31 May 1715 Hunterdon Co., NJ, d. 1795 Hunterdon Co., NJ; md. ca. 1740 Hunterdon Co., NJ to Elizabeth Robins, b. ca. 1720 Hunterdon Co., NJ, d. ca. 1800 Hunterdon Co., NJ 3) Andrew Woolverton, b. ca. 1750 Hunterdon Co., NJ, d. ca. 1812 Maury Co., TN; md. ca. 1780 to Sarah Ann Stone, b. ca. 1760, d. ca. 1800 Somerset, KY I also descend from the Dodson family and am forwarding this message to the Dodson e-mail discussion group also. HI Bill, I am Billy J. Dotson, GG Grandchild of Simon Dotson (Billy, Clayton, Daniel, William, Simon), who's father is believed to be William Dodson/Dotson. This William is descendent from Charles Dodson that so many people in the Dodson Roots Web are discussing. I have read many of the comments and yet have determined which set of that William is from, Lambeth Sr. and Jr. or Thomas Sr. and Jr. The following is a sketch of what I have but other persons say the linkage from Charles to Simon is through Lambeth Sr. and Jr. Direct Descendants of Charles I. Russ, Thanks for the message. I truly believe that the Dodsons who came early to Wayne co were most likley related. Most went on to Boone/Hendricks Co In. I am still looking for that connection. Please stay in touch. Good luck with your research. By the way, if you are ever near Danville Illinois there is a Dodson cemetery in Kennekuk County Park. The county is establishing a small pioneer village near Dodson/Lockhart homesteads. The church was establish by George & Martha's son Ruel and built by their grandson Rev George Dodson. Good luck with your research. Hi to Everyone: I would like to clarify this subject, and submit a public apology. I was just trying to contact a person who had posted a message with the subject: "unauthorized data" -- HIS WORDS!. I thought I would find him easier if I used these words, never thinking that they might be offensive to other readers of the list. As it turned out, he actually posted this message on another List that I subscribe to. I am truly sorry if anyone has been offended by the thought that they might be using "unauthorized data", and if it were possible, I would delete my message.
