Hi folks! Did you know that the late senator Chet HOLIFIELD of California was descended from the DODSON/GOAD lines? Here is his immediate info: CHESTER EARL (CHET) HOLIFIELD, son of Erscie Vira HOLIFIELD and Vernice CANEER, born December 3, 1903 in Mayfield, Kentucky, died February 5, 1995, in Redlands, California. On September 14, 1922, in Montebello, Los Angeles, California, married VERNICE CANEER, (daughter of Joseph Caneer and Willie Romines), born November 22, 1903, died June 12, 1991. Chester was elected to the 78th Congress in November 1942 as the first representative from the newly reapportioned Nineteenth Congressional District of California. ISSUE: LOIS ANITA , married WILLIAM BURDICK MULHOLLAND BETTY LEE, married ROBERT HERMAN FELDMANN PATRICIA JEAN (PATTY) WILLA MAE, married DONALD LEE DOUGLAS JO ANN, married DONALD WILLIAMS and ROBERT M. WARD Now here is how he connects: Chet's father, Erscie Vira HOLIFIELD, was the son of John Riley HOLIFIELD and Julia Ann DODSON of Graves County, Kentucky. Julia Ann DODSON was the daughter of Thomas DODSON and Catherine E. GOAD. And Thomas DODSON was the son of Asa DODSON and Nancy WOLVERTON. Wish I could make the Catherine E. GOAD connection tie into the main body of GOAD research on the net. All I know is that she was born 12 Dec 1825 in Tennessee. The Renicks originally came from PA to Augusta Va, but the Dodsons were also in that general area also. I'm trying to put together some bits and pieces on my most distant ancestor,(Richard Dotson b 10/23/1752--son William married Mary Franks son of Henry Franks from MD) where he was at what time, etc., because I think he had to have a mother and father! From around 1776 to about 1800,( he was reported to have been born in Shenandoah Co, VA,) some children were born in MD and/or Greene Co, PA and he was an Indian spy in the Rev War, primarily on the WV/PA line and around Wheeling/Morgantown area of WV. He served under a Capt John Minor, and some have said he was son of Thomas Dodson and Francis Minor, but I've never been able to confirm this. He was one of the first settlers of Doddridge Co WV about 1799-1800. He signed with a mark, and appears to have left the kinfolk in WV or PA, so he might have had a name change from Dodson to Dotson. (Lots of my other ancestors changed their names -- maybe on the run, huh?--and it seems that most of them went over the mountains -- all of them West Virginia hills--and lost contact with their relatives). Anyway, let me know the dates and your farthest back ancestors, and I'll share anything I have that connects. I've been researching Dotsons for about 20 years -- off and on of course -- and I'm hoping the internet will find the link. I've already gotten 2 other branches back to 1600's from connecting up through the internet. Betty

However, we have visited there twice and also talked to some folks when I did research about 1980. My branch of the family settled in Kentucky about 1790 although all were sescended from two brothers who settled near Harrisburg (Paxtang) PA about 1719 from Enniskillen Ireland. There is a book called "Greenbrier Renicks" published about 1950 by Mrs. BF Harlow all about the WV branch with many stories about the town originally called "Falling Spring". It's in the Library of Confress and other places. I have excerpts from it somewhere. Good Luck" Tom Renick (These are some notes from 'Renick Pioneers' booklet we put out in 1980's: Robert Renick was killed by Indians and his family (wife and children) captured by the Indians? Colonel William with his brother Thomas were among the first explorers of Greenbrier Co - west of Augusta Co, VA. William (one of the Renicks who built the first section of the Renick house) served as a Lt. at Point Pleasant in 1777. In March 1769 Thomas Renick was one of the early settlers of Greenbrier Co. Lewisburg Presbyterian Church cemetary has several early Renicks buried there. Not much, but when we found our ancestors went west to Kentucky, the "Greenbrier Renicks" were put on the back burner. My husband once talked to Matthew Tabor who was going to get him a Renick Volunteer Fire Dept cap since we live in rural Florida and are probably our own fire dept -- but the cap never materialized. Matthew in 1980 was old, but showed us around the town of Renick and gave us loads of information and pointed out the home of a descendent of the Renick for whom the town was named, and we later visted with her. Keep hunting those Dodson/Dotsons since I've found more Renicks than I know what to do with! Betty
Betty, I'm a bit confused. Did your branch of the DODSONS come from PA or was it the Renick family? If The DODSONS of Renick were your distant cousins then there may be a connect as they were 1/4 of my family. If the DODSONS were From PA I would be interested in knowing about them as part of my Dodson line left VA and moved to PA. I have a few interesting notes on Renick that I will dig out for your husband and the next time I am there I will try to find him a Fire cap. Jack

Anyway, I know more about Renicks than I EVER wanted to know. We compiled a booklet in the early 80's Called "Renick Pioneers". We also know all about the Renicks who went to Kentucky and Ohio and Indiana. Do you still live near Renick? Probably the Renicks and Dodsons knew each other when in Shenandoah Co, VA (might have intermarried?). Anyway, keep on searching. Good to hear from you. My husband might want to communicate with you about Renick! Betty
Thanks, I now live in Annapolis, MD. My Mother lives in Renick. Please send me anything you have on the town as I am starting to collect info on it. The 1850 census of Rusk Co TX has several Dodsons living near each other: page 248 Labon Dodson age 51 b. TN and wife Margaret 45 b. NC. page 248 Thosmas S. Dodson 23 b. TN and wife Martha 18 b.KY. page 250 Jesse Dodson - didn't copy more data page 259 Elijah Dodson - didn't copy more data My interest is in a Rebecca JONES age 17 b. TN living with the Labon Dodson's. There are no other children; there is another young male age 21 whose name I could not decipher. I am certain this Rebecca Jones m. John W. GOODWIN in 1851 next door in Cherokee Co. I believe this Rebecca Jones is dau of Seaborn L. Jones and wife Catherine LONG. Can anyone connect DODSONS with JONES or LONGS in TN or AL? Also of interest is in the 1850 census of Russell Co. AL, there is another Labon Dodson age41 with wife Mary 38. Would that be a nephew or cousin? There is also a James and Joshua Dodson on pages 32 & 33. Labon is on page 37. Again I am trying to determine that Rebecca Jones was the dau of Seaborn L. Jones and Catherine Long. Question is how did she get with the Dodsons when she had to travel from Talladega AL to Rusk Co. at the age of 17? Will appreciate any ideas. Bob Battaglia <bobbatt@texas.net> in the Alamo City
