    3. Karen-- You're right, the Smoots don't make any sense, yet that is what the IGI and ancestral files and everyone else has been printing for a long time. We have pretty much decided we're not related to the Smoots anyway (did I send you the Durham paper?), though there is some sort of connection as yet unfigured out. I'm probably confused on the William Hanks, my brain was beginning to go after typing in all that stuff! Sarah Durham was the niece of Mary Durham who married Thomas Dodson Sr.; the daughter of Mary's brother Thomas and Mary Smoot (how's that for confusion?!) Maybe someone else will correct me and then we'll know for sure! I've just looked through my Hanks stuff, and Luke Hanks married about 1719, so I think you're probably right, it probably was his NEPHEW William Hanks III who married Sarah Durham. Sorry for the confusion. Michelle Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA

    3. Glenn, Steve and Dodsons, I believe I saw the North Farnham Parish Registers at the DAR Library in Honolulu. I have copies of the pages of Smoots and Durhams, (and Dodsons when I dig deeper in the box). They read as follows: B. (birth) Smoot, Mary daughter of William and Jane Smoot, 7 April 1693 B. Smoot, Anne, daughter of William and Jane Smoot, 16 March 1698 B. Smoot, Elizabeth daughter of William and Jane Smoot 16 March 1698 D (died) Jane Smoot 4 October 1726 B. Durham, Nelly daughter of John and Sarah Durham 13 March 1750 D. Durham, Mary 8 May 1750 B. Durham, Charnell son of John and Sarah Durham, 29 June 1753 That's it. It occurred to me the other day that if I found that book again, I'd look for Dorothy Durham's death under her second husband, Jeremiah Greenham, thus she would be listed as Dorothy Greenham at her death in these record books. I didn't look for any Roses and I'm not a Goad so I have no knowledge there. For those of you Dodsons puzzling over these Smoot and Durham names; Dorothy and William's daughter Mary married Thomas Dodson Sr. in 1710. You'll note that marriage is not mentioned here. 1. Deposition of Joseph Hanks, Jr., 1817 & Joseph Nevelt in KY
    2. Glenn Gohr
    3. (Note be William E. Barton--Joseph Hanks, Jr., had removed with his mother to Virginia about a year after the death of Joseph Hanks, Sr., and later returned to Kentucky.) The deposition of Joseph Hanks taken on the bank of the Ohio River at John Dodson's Ferry in Breckenridge County on the eighth day of March, 1817, to be read as witness in a suit of chancery now pending in the Nelson County Circuit Court and undetermined where Zachariah Riney is complainant, and Jane Nevelt of the heirs of Joseph Nevelt, Mary Ann Compton and Charles Shanks for the heirs of Benedict Compton, defenders. This deponent, a full agent duly sworn deposeth and saith--That some time in the year 1799 in conversation with Joseph Nevelt concerning the title of a certain tract of land in Nelson County lying on the Rolling Fork about two miles above the mouth of Pottinger's Creek, which land was willed to him, this deponent, by his father Joseph Hanks and then in the possession of said Nevelt, he, this deponent heard Nevelt say that the title of Barnet was not good, but he expected probably he could obtain it but with great difficulty as Barnet had died solvent. This deponent states that the said Nevelt about two years after came to him to purchase his right of the said land and he, this deponent, sold him his good will of it for an old chunk of a horse that would of traded for about fifteen dollars; and further this deponent saith not. Taken and sworn to before me, the subscribed, a Justice of the Peace for Breckenridge County, this 8th day of March 1817. Arnold Elder, J. P. B. 3. From the book: Barton, William E. THE LINEAGE OF LINCOLN. Indianapolis, IN: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1929. 419 pp. This book is available on interlibrary loan and in a number of different libraries. It is usually not considered a genealogy book- -but more of a history book--so it probably can even be checked out and taken home! I know it is available locally at the Central Bible College Library, 3000 N. Grant, Springfield, MO 65803. Of interest to many of our Hanks/Dodson/Neville & allied researchers is mention of some of the following names: William Smoote (Sr.?), William and Jane Smoote, Mary (Smoote) Durham, Thomas Durham, John Durham, Joseph Durham (son of Thomas & Mary Smoote Durham), Margaret Durham (dau. of Thomas & Mary Smoote Durham), Sarah (Durham) Hanks (dau. of Thomas & Mary Smoote Durham), Henry Hill, Mary Ann Hill, Joseph Chinn, Thomas Chinn, Edwin L. Dodson, John Dodson, Eleanor (Hanks) Dodson, Andrew Wodrow, also quite a few references to the various Lee families of Virginia (as Barton says they are kin to Nancy Hanks Lincoln), and a Jane Nevelt, Joseph Nevelt, Robert Nevelt, Col. John Nevil, and a William Newell. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr (Hanks & Neville List Manager) ggohr01@mail.orion.org

    1. Re: DODSON Confusion
    2. Glenn Gohr
    3. Rob & Heather & All: According to the 2 vol. book by Williams & Lucas, pp. 34-38, 2nd Fork Thomas Dodson's children are listed thus: 1) Ida or Ioda Dodson (no further info. available)--dau. of 1st wife 2) George Dodson (no further info. available)--son of 1st wife. Lucas & Williams point out that the Rev. Elias Dodson manuscript makes mention of the 2 children by the first wife, but it is unclear who she was. Supposedly 2nd Fork Thomas was married first to a daughter of "Lame George Dodson." The only "Lame George Dodson" that can be found is a brother of 2nd Fork Thomas. Surely 2nd Fork Thomas would not have married his own niece. Either Rev. Elias Dodson has his information confused or else a different George Dodson was involved. Current family members are wondering whether 2nd Fork Thomas even had a first wife, as he would have been quite young. As a note--my ancestor, Agatha (or Aggatha) Dodson who married Moses Hanks, was born Dec. 1749 in VA. She seems to have been the oldest child of 2nd Fork Thomas Dodson and wife Mary Neville. 2nd Fork Thomas would have been 21 years old at her birth. It's possible he had these 2 children above born before Agatha, but he would have been quite young. The children by Mary Neville as listed by Lucas and Williams are: 1) Thomas Jeremiah Dodson, b. VA (in the 1770s) 2) Jesse Dodson, b. VA (in the 1770s) 3) Frances "Fanny" (Dodson) Dodson md. Thomas Dodson, son of Joseph. 4) Agatha or Agatha (Dodson) Hanks, b. Dec. 1749 in VA md. Moses Hanks 5) Elizabeth "Betty" (Dodson) Dodson md. David Dodson son of George & Margaret (Dagord) Dodson 6) Rhoda (Dodson) Hittson md. Alexander Hittson 7) Winifred "Winney" (Dodson) Johnson md. William Johnson 8) Alice "Alcy" (Dodson) Johnson md. Stephen Johnson 9) Susannah (Dodson) Johnson md. James Johnson 10) Samuel Dodson md. possibly to Polly King 11) William Dodson, d. 22 Dec. 1809 unmarried 12) James Dodson Now, in looking all this info. over again, I see a very interesting deed from March 23, 1811 in Hawkins Co., TN where 2nd Fork Thomas Dodson makes deed of gift to most of his children regarding his interest in the estate of his deceased son, William Dodson. This is mentioned more fully on p. 37 of the 2-vol. Dodson book. This may be the last mention we have of 2nd Fork Thomas being alive. In a deed on 25 March 1816 he is referred to as "Thomas Dodson, dec'd." I also notice quite interesting that no dates of birth are given for any of the above 14 children of 2ndd Fork Thomas--only my Agatha (Dodson) Hanks has a year of birth given. Many of the others are stated to have been born in the 1770s--this would be almost 20 yrs. after my Agatha was born. Either the supposed dates are wrong on these children as given in the Dodson book or at the very least they are given in the wrong order of birth. Does anyone have estimated dates of birth for any others of the children of 2nd Fork Thomas Dodson? Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org On Fri, 27 Mar 1998, Rob & Heather Williams wrote: > Hi folks! > > I need wisdom from the DODSON experts.
