    3. Hi, I remember seeing all of these names. Please job my memory and tell me where you think these marriages occured. The books by June Baldwin Bork have extensive Burnett and very much Dodson information. She has a 3 volume set on the Burnett Family and a multi-volume set on Wayne Co Ky Records. My father is a Burnett descendant and my mother a Dodson descendant. Both families came through Wayne Co about 1812. I will check my sources at email more information later. 3. Michelle, per the following paragraph from your message. I derive that Thomasin had a daughter Mary and a son Alexander from a previous marriage to a Campbell. Could Mary Marshall be Mary Campbell? Could Abraham Marshall have adopted (on 7 Jan 1699) her and thus she changed her name to Mary Marshall? But then why would she have married her brother, Alexander? Any thoughts? f131r-Abraham MARSHALL, blacksmith, will; 3 Nov 1708, 6 Jul 1709 wife Thomasin use of plant. and lands in NFP, after her death, to dau. 3. Michelle, Thanks for all the information. But, I would like to clarify who the William Smoot listed in the first will dated 28 Aug 1782. This is the will of the William Smoot who married Frances ?. I believe his parents were William Smoot and Eleanor Veale. And, his grandparents were Thomas Smoot and Jane Batten. Steve

    3. Steve, The bracketed comments about Mary Marshall Campbell were from the Will book--a comment from the compiler. I didn't look into it any more than what is there. I figured one of the dates must be wrong but since I was photocopying and not digesting while at the library, I couldn't say anything more. The s-i-l means son in law which is how Alexander Campbell seems to have been recorded in the will. So the William Smoot will is probably William Smoot son and grandson of Charles County-ers. Interesting, isn't it, that there may have been contact--or not--across the Potomac. So maybe William and Jane Smoot were related to the immigrant? I wish I could have read about the Fox and Heale ancesters! Michelle Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA

    3. I had two hours at the Sutro library on the way back from the airport. This is what I found about William Smoot JR and SR and the usual trio of mysterious sisters: Dorothy, Alice and Thomasin. I think it was the Virginia Genealogy Quarterly (listed as "V" in the Virginia Historical society book--the one that tells you where everyone with a given name is listed in Tyler, William and Mary Quarterly and so on. I can't remember the title right now and I'm very tired, sorry), vol 18 had more information on the ancestry of the Fox and Heale families. 3. Brian, I currently do not have a copy of Alice Stretchly's will. I'm assuming that this may have been an assumption based on Dorothy's relationship to William Smoot. Because if you assume that Dorothy is William Smoot's daughter, and that Alice is a sister to Dorothy, then Alice must be William Smoot's daughter. I think since Newman wrote that William Smoot had a daughter Alice, people assumed that this was the same Alice. I don't think we have sufficient proof at this point. Steve Smoot

    3. Brian, I have neither copy or abstract of Alice Chinn's will. I do now sometimes they used different terms for relations that we do today, for instance, son-in-law then often meant what step-son does today, quite a difference in determining who is who. It seems clear Alice, Dorothy, and Thomazine were sisters. We know Dorothy, married to Thomas Durham, had a daughter Mary who was probably already married to Thomas Dodson when Alice made her will. She would, in today's terms, be Alice's niece, not cousin. That may be who she meant. Just as an aside, I don't believe for a minute that Alice, Dorothy, and Thomazine born 1650/60's are daughters of the same William and Jane Smoot we have in Richmond Co. with the daughters Mary, and the other two girls whose names escape me born late 1680/90's. 3. Michelle, I should have re-edited my original memo. Could William Smoot II have married Dorothy and they had a son William Smoot III? If William Smoot III was born in 1680, William Smoot II would have been about 29 and Dorothy would have been about 17. Perhaps William II and Dorothy never married but had an illegitimate son, William Smoot III? Could this account for the relationship? Yes, I'm going out on a limb but I'm hoping that through brainstorming we can gradually piece this together. Noone else has mentioned William Smoot II having a son William Smoot III. And, it is odd that his known daughters weren't born until 1693 and 1698. He would have been about 42 and 47, respectively, when they were born. Isn't this unusually old for the time? Is there any chance Thomazin, Alice, and Dorothy were single maidens from England? Does anyone have access to those records?

    3. Cousins, If Dorothy Smoot Durham was a sister of William Smoot, Jr., and if William Smoot, Sr died intestate after having settled property on his older daughters, then everything fits. William Smoot (1) moved from VA to MD in 1646 with two sons, Thomas and Richard. At that time he is presumed to be almost 50 years old. The widow Grace Wood is likely his 2nd wife. In 1642, William was claiming to have transported himself and at least 7 others to VA between 1633 and 1646. So he could have possibly brought children of his first marriege to VA. An older son, William (2) could have established a family in VA before '46 and therefore not moved to MD. A later birthdate for William (2) is commonly given because he was not named for headright to MD in '46, but consider that he could have been born circa 1620 to 1625 and married by '46. I have been told that many genealogist skip a generation here or there. Three William Smoots between 1600 and 1700 seem more likely all the time. Brian Walls Columbia, Maryland

    3. Are you conjecturing that prior to marrying Thomas Durham, Dorothy ? was married to William Smoot III? That won't work because Mr. and Mrs. Durham were alive and married in 1700 when those powers of attorney were drawn up. Nice try Steve! But are you also suggesting that William Smoot Jr. may have owed money to the Durhams and the land William Smoot Sr. passed on to Dorothy Durham was the payment? That brings us back to the question of why was it only to Dorothy? You could tell better than I if Smoot is a common name, but I wouldn't think so. Someone wrote that Jr and Sr applied whether the individuals with the same name were related or not--it was just used to tell them apart. Because William Smoot Sr. is designated as such, I would assume he was the father; especially since that designation occurred in William Smoot Sr.'s will. Is it possible Jr moved on to other spots? This is the first time I've seen anything on him. If I ever get back to a library, I'll check records. But what about the 1704 VA tithes? If I can find them again on the Internet, I'll look. In your experience are children who moved away mentioned in wills? It seems to me from wills I've read, if the kid isn't in the neighborhood, he doesn't inherit. That's why I wonder if William Smoot Jr. may have headed west and therefore been overlooked in the will. Of course he was a lawyer, . . . ! FYI, a bunch of us Dodsons are also Hanks relations: In 1711 Hester Mills married William Hanks Jr. Mary Smoot Durham's daughter Sarah married his nephew William Hanks (son of Luke) much later. It's all so interconnected! Michelle Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA

    3. OK, guys, there is a resource we need to get, maybe someone already has it or lives close enough to Montross, VA to get it for us. Thomas DODSON of Westmoreland Co. left a will in 1670. Westmoreland Co. at that time was adjacent or part of the area that is now Richmond Co., where Charles DODSON and his sons lived. The Westmoreland County Courthouse does not look up or mail out copies of these old documents, they have sublet the work to an Evelyn Neale, ph. no. 804-529-6329. I do not know what she charges to do this. You can write to her attention % Westmoreland County Courthouse, Clerk of Circuit Court, P. O. Box 307, Montross, VA 22520. They are located on Polk St. Does someone already have an abstract or copy of this will of Thomas DODSON? Can someone get it for us? Gene in NC now ____ Always seeking ROOKS & BALLENTINE
