I am new to this list but have spent many years researching my Smith/Smith lines. A big road block for me has been: David A. Smith b. July 29, 1855 Overton Co. Tennessee to Jeremiah Smith and Nancy ?Smith? d. February 29, 1924 Mt.Carmel Illinois married #1 Sarah Manerva Dodson b. 5/27/1857 Middleton, Tenn to Orville B Dodson and Mary Ann Alta Johnson d. 4/10/1908 Mt.Carmel, Wabash Co., Il. Paul Manley Smith Fannie Smith (Brunner) Alta Smith (McComb) Anyone else working on this line of Dodson's and if so, do you have any leads on this David A. Smith? It is said that there is Cherokee lineage starting with his mother. I do have a hand written record of family births/spouses of Thomas Jeremiah Dodson and Fannie Francis Thompson written by a W.T.Dodson. This was supplied to me by a "cousin" several years ago and we have since lost contact when I had to put this search aside. I will be trying to make contact again now that I am retired. Thanks for any help Judy Smith/Smith Steffen southern Illinois

I've found Thomas Dodson sold 367 acres on Jeremy's Run in Frederick Co VA 3/12/1776 (located between Moody Creek & Jeremy's Run). Property sold to Ephraim Leith who sold same tract 5/29/1783 to Moses Moody. Can anyone identify this Thomas? Betty
This isn't exactly Dodson related, but seeing the recent will abstract makes me giggle. Do you realize how hard it is to research the Shilling surname? I have read so many wills! <LOL> Have a great day! Here is a note from Shirley Wilcox of the Neville List. It does show that Rev. Thomas Dodson had a daughter Sarah who married a Neville. A synopsis of the will is included. My lineage is through William Neville who m Winifred Oldham, not Mary Neville who m Richard Jackman. This Mary Neville Jackman is still hanging in limbo. Like Mary Neville Dodson, I don't feel comfortable placing her yet. I am still toying with various possibilities. Descendants of both of these women have claimed Joseph Neville as the father. Joseph did have a son John, but that was the John, sometimes referred to as General, who m Winifred Oldham and died in Pittsburg. I have an abstract of Thomas Dodson's will in a book I own. Lela C. Adams, Abstracts of Pittsylvania Co VA Wills, 1767-1820 (Easley, SC: Souther Historical Press, Inc., 1986) [For those of you unfamiliar with Southern Historical Press, it was owned by Rev. To grandson Thomas Dodson, son of Joseph Dodson, deceased, 1 shilling. To son Thomas Dodson, my whip saw. To son George Dodson, negro girl Levina. To son WIlliam Dodson, after the death of my wife, the plantation & tract of land where I now live. To daughter Sarah Nevil, 1 shilling. To daughter Elizabeth Bennett, 1 shilling. To Else Dodson, 1 shilling. To daughter Rhody Creal, 1 shilling. Likewise I lend to her the negro woman Vilet during her natural life and afterwards to my son Jesse Dodson. Also to son Jesse Dodson my still, it to be valued and he is to pay his brothers and sisters their equal share. I give to the use of the separate and regular Baptist to meet in the worship service of the Lord the meeting house near John Creel mill with the 3 acres of land. Does anyone connect up with or have any information about the above person? Thanks, Betty
This was on the Neville List, but maybe someone from the Dodson List can also help. Glenn Gohr (Neville List Manager) ggohr01@mail.orion.org ________________ Shirley, I believe you misread part of my post regarding the questions about Sarah Dodson. According to the North Farnham Parish Register, Richmond Co., VA, she was born 27 May 1732. According to the Rev. Elias Dodson manuscript, which was written in about 1859, she married a John Nevill. I did not say that Sarah was listed anywhere as the wife of your John Nevill (c1689-1768). I was wondering if she could have been the wife of the John Nevill who was the older brother of your Mary Neville Jackman. Do you have any info. on John Nevill, brother of Mary Neville Jackman, as to dates of birth and death, who he married and who his descendants might be? Also, you mentioned the will of Thomas Dodson, Sr. in Pittsylvania Co., VA, in 1783 where he mentions daughter Sarah. I've not been able to locate a copy of this Thomas Dodson's will in any of Rev. S. E. Lucas's books. Do you perhaps have access to this will or a synopsis of it? Is she listed just as "Sarah Dodson" or is her last name listed as "Neville" in the will? (I believe I do have a copy of that will somewhere in my things, but it is buried in stacks of paper, if I do have it.) Hoping to hear from you about John Neville, sister of Mary Neville Jackman. Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org ---------- From: Shirley L Wilcox <slwilcox@juno.com> To: NEVILLE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Sarah Dodson Date: Thursday, May 28, 1998 7:58 PM Glenn, I am familiar with the reference you mentioned in the Dodson book, but can not place these people. First, Sarah Dodson cannot be the wife of John Neville who d 1768 as she is the age of John's children. We have no wife for this John who must have predeceased him as she is not in the will. There was a John Nevill with wife Sarah who in 1782 sold land in Henry Co, VA (this co formed 1776-7 from Pittsylvania & Patrick). This may well be the John who had land in 1766-69 in the Halifax/Pittsylvania County area. See Marian Dodson Chiarito, Entry Record Book 1737-1770 (Land entries in the present Virginia Counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, & Patrick), 1984. Thomas Dodson Jr, father of Sarah, had a will proven 21 Oct 1783, Pittsylvania Co, VA. I see this John & Sarah as possible relations (parents???) of George Nevill who m Sarah Foster. George & Sarah were m 1785 Halifax Co by Rev Thos Dodson. Another unconnected link in this area is the marriage of John Nevill & Rachel Martin 1786, Henry Co, VA. Was this a second marriage for John? Has anyone studies Nevills in this area around Pittsylvania Co? I wrote to Rev Silas E Lucas a number of years ago, but he passed on no helpful information. I found a couple more notes I took at the Sutro two weeks ago. I have no idea if any of them are pertinent. TYLER'S QUARTERLY vol. 1 p 61 (Notes from Barton's Colonial Decisions vol. 1, Sir John Randolph's reports. Cases were decided between 1728-1743) William Fox died, willing his estate to his wife [Ann Chinn Fox Chichester--daughter of Alice Stretchley, sister of Dorothy Durham--this is really stretching] during his natural life, and in case of her death the property should go to his nephew David Fox and his heirs, but if it should so happen that he should not be alive nor have any heirs, at the time of the decease of the said wife [Ann CFC], he gave his estate to Mrs. Burgess and all the daughter of George Heale who should be living at that time. [George Heale was the husband of Ann's sister Catherine Chinn] . David Fox is deceased and Mrs. Burgess is his only sister and admx. Mrs. Chicester died during the suit and it was revived by George Heale, in behalf of all his daughters, several of whom were born after the testator's death. Notes following above: for the Fox pedigree see Tyler's Quarterly XVIII p. 59-64; for Heale, ibid p. 202-204. Wm. Fox married Ann Chinn who married 2. Richard Chichester. George Heale married herh sister Catherin Chinn and left four daughters. Mrs. Burgess was Francis Fox, daughter of Samuel Fox and wife of Charles Burgess. Her brother David Fox is omitted from the pedigree. [Volume 18 of Tyler's Quarterly was not on the shelf when I was at the library last week--mdu] RECORDS OF INDENTURED SERVANTS AND OF CERTIFICATES FOR LAND, NORTHUMERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1650-1795; compiledl by W. Steve Smoot (currently living!) has advised me he believes this William Smoot to be the grandson of the immigrant William Smoot, and from the MD branch of the family. Jeanne Barton (off the Neville line) tells me there are Smoots and Gilberts in Middlesex County as well, though these may be later members of the family. Michelle Ule Robertule@aol.com Ukiah, CA

I am going to post my info again in case someone new may have come on the list that may be able to help us, as we are still at a dead end and can find nothing else, any help would be greatly appreciated. my husbands grandfather was V.Y. Savage, b-2-29-1876 d- 12-27-1905 V.Y.'s parents were a Savage and the only first name we have ever heard was George, we have no other info here. His mother was either Molly or Dorcus Dodson and we have been told both first names, with no apparent proof of either one. We have no other info of where V.Y. Savage may have been born, except that the concensus goes within around Denton, Texas. Molly or Dorcus Dodson my have not been married at the time V.Y. was born, and have given him the Savage name anyway. If anyone has any info that would help please let us know. In a message dated 24/05/1998 06:06:19, you write: << remember seeing all of these names. Please job my memory and tell me where you think these marriages occured. The books by June Baldwin Bork have extensive Burnett and very much Dodson information. She has a 3 volume set on the Burnett Family and a multi-volume set on Wayne Co Ky Records. My father is a Burnett descendant and my mother a Dodson descendant. Both families came through Wayne Co about 1812. I will check my sources at email more information later. JO >> Hi JO and All, I'm sorry to say that I have no information as to where the mentioned marriages took place; they were simply listed in a letter I received about six years ago from a family researcher...
