Dear Mickey, Do you have any information on a William Y. DODSON b. 1821 NC, D. Mar 22, 1866 TN, m. Sarah D. EAST, lived in Westmoreland TN in the 1850's? Thankyou for your attention to this question. Gerie Dodson-Smith

Here's a question for fellow researchers... In the early 1800s, there seems to have been a very deliberate name spelling shift from Dodson to Dotson among many members of this clan. It does not seem to be a mistake of illiteracy--but it does coincide with the movement of many of the family members (who I have studied) westward in Virginia towards Appalachia. Does anyone have any clues on why they changed their names? Mary Dotson
Mary, I have not been able to find info on the name switch but I wonder if you would share your info on the Dodsons who moved to the mountains. Jack Mayhew, jmayhew050@aol.com
My grand aunt, 92 years of age, has been moved to a long term care facility. She is quite depressed as she has been living in an assisted living facility for several years and was quite happy there. Due to her failing health, that is no longer possible. If you'd like to join me in cheering up dear Aunt Mildred, please send a card to: Mrs. Mildred Barr c/o Life Care Center 315 East Lee Highway New Market, VA 22844 Aunt Mildred is a direct descendant of Jemima Dodson (Jacob>Peter>John>Charles, Sr.) Alley alley@tampabay.rr.com List Mgr for Rootsweb surname lists for Dodson, McWilliams, Showers, Thrift http://home.tampabay.rr.com/shenandoah/index.html "Shenandoah Ancestry"
I found mine as DOTTSON in some records. My McWilliams are found as Williams. ...not because they spelled it as such but because there is a huge gap in between the Mc and the Williams. Compilers of records for marriages and indexes for census years repeat the error again and again. It's always good to think of every imaginable spelling and check them all. One just never knows. Thanks, Cheryl. alley -----Original Message----- From: Cheryl Adams <adamscd@ne.infi.net> To: DODSON-L@rootsweb.com <DODSON-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, July 25, 1998 8:22 PM Subject: Re: question regarding the list >Hi Alley and Lauri, >I can rtestify my own family of DOTSONs has been recorded as DOBSON, and >DODSON. You all may not know that I have a new Dickson County web site. I finally have a 'REAL' working surname list started...(of course, it is only my names at the moment).. Please take a look at the Query page and submit your ancester that you are researching and by tomorrow the "The Surname list should be up and running!" Surnames are to be submitted to my email address. Queries are to be filled out at the Query Post page . It will take the help of 'my' friends to get this rolling... I can't do it without you! While you are at it...look around, I have one or two things that are different... hopefully, will be fun..not a lot of bells and whistles YET.. I'm just learning, remember! Give me some feedback. Tell me what you would like to see.. I wll do my best to get it! I know from my own experience ..that my family drifted back and forth across the county lines...so you may want to leave a query at an adjacent county, too. For your convenience I am leaving the main county web page address here . Hope to see your names soon! Priscilla was the daughter of DR. HENRY HARDING DODSON (1855-1926) and his wife ANNE BARKER BARRETT (1854-1903). The last info on Priscilla was that she was attending State Normal College for Women in NC and studying domestic science and art in early 1900's. Will appreciate any help. CHARLES DODSON, son of WILLIAM DODSON & FRANCES GILLIAM married his cousin, LUCY DODSON, daughter of CHARLES DODSON & ELIZABETH (POINDEXTER?) Aug 15, 1801. Charles died 1802/03 and the next mention of this family was a sheriff sale of Charles's land where Lucy and young son, Daniel lived for money owed to James & Henry Lyne on Nov, 1814. The land was purchased by Stephen Dodson, brother of Lucy. A later deed, when Stephen sold the land, denotes Charles as his brother but Stephen's father's will did not mention a Charles but did name Lucy. No further record is found for Lucy or Daniel Dodson. Hi, In researching my Dr. Jesse Dodson, I have come across an abbreviation that I haven't seen before in censuses. Maybe one of you out there can help me. The abbreviation is after his name on the 1830 Scott County Missouri census, pg 002, Dodson, Jessy (M.M.) Do any of you know what the "(M.M.)" means? Thanks, Patsy Seay McGregor, Texas
