    1. DODSON TN TX OK
    2. Allen DODSON m Emma ? around 1870's. Both Allen and Emma were born in TN. They moved to TX where I believe all of their kids were born. I only know of 2 children of this union, Walter T. DODSON ( I think he was older,he married Cora ?) and William "Oscar" DODSON. William Oscar DODSON was b Feb of 1878 in TX and died Sept 1964 in Guthrie OK. He married about 3 times; Lottie FIELDER in TX, Viola Wheeler in OK, and Cordie Bell Mcannally Meeks. The list of Rev. William Oscar DODSON's kids in no particular order are; Marcus, Ollis Wayman, W.O,Ora Lee, Emri,OWayne, Marjorie Ruth,Martine,JP,Reba. I think that Allen and Emma DODSON could have lived in or near Collin Co TX because on of William Oscar DODSON's kids was born in Blue Ridge, Collin Co TX. Walter T. and William Oscar moved to the Guthrie,Crescent,Perry OK area. thanks Lynne

    2. Danita J. Dodson
    3. Dear Mickey, Thanks so much for your willingness to supply information about Eli Dodson. It did help. It allowed me to narrow the possibilities. I had earlier assumed that my Eli might be the son of William and the brother of Simon and "Buckey," but I did not know for sure. I learned from your account of dates, names and logistics that this Eli could not possibly be my Eli. He never made it to Tennessee, or outside of Virginia to settle. That still leaves the question of his parentage, but at least I can now begin to evaluate other possibilities. Thanks again. Sincerely, Danita ---------- > From: DODSON-D-request@rootsweb.com > To: DODSON-D@rootsweb.com > Subject: DODSON-D Digest V98 #143 > Date: Saturday, August 08, 1998 2:17 AM >

    3. Hi Danita, In my records, I have an Eli DODSON (1798-1828) died in White County, wife - Mary "Polly" Goad (1807-1830)...had one son, Eli (Jr) who was born shortly after his father's death in 1828. I think he was raised by other family members and moved to MO or somewhere west and was quite prominent. My Eli (Sr) appears to be the son of a William DODSON. Hope this helps....or narrows down the possibilities. Regards, Mickey

    3. Dear Rootsweb Dodsons, I am desperately searching for information about my ggg-grandfather, Eli Dodson. I know little about him, but any knowledge I could obtain would help me begin to piece together my family tree. Here's what I know: Eli was born c.1802, somewhere in Virginia. I have heard that he lived for many years in Patrick County, Virginia. It has also been said that he is buried there. He married a Susan? c.1825. And he sired Thomas Dodson, my gg-grandfather. I do not know Eli's parents' names, and there is a rumor that he was an orphan. So--as of now--my family tree ends, and not even with certainty, in the early 1800s. Does anyone have info about Eli's parents? Or his arrival date in Patrick County? Or from whence he came prior to Patrick Co.? Any assistance will be met with a mega-portion of Dodson gratitude. Sincerely, Danita Dodson Hancock County, Tennessee ---------- > From: DODSON-D-request@rootsweb.com > To: DODSON-D@rootsweb.com > Subject: DODSON-D Digest V98 #141 > Date: Thursday, August 06, 1998 9:17 AM >

    3. Hello cousins, I have not been a member of the DODSON rootsweb long but have read that the name DOBSON was changed upon arriving in America. I don't know if this is true because I am having difficulty tracing the DOBSON name. BUT...I went to the FHC here in PA the other day and found a book titled, "Irish Passenger Lists 1847-1871" by Brian Mitchell copyrighted 1988. I don't know how reliable this book is but it had the following listing: "Sailing from Londonderry to America on the ships on the J&J Cooke Line and the McCorkell Line." On the Lord Maidstone in 1848 to St. John was Barbara Dobson aged 2, Eliza aged 10, Margaret aged 8, and John aged 6. Any one know where St. John is? In another book, "Passengers From Ireland - Lists of Passengers arriving at American Ports Between 1811 & 1817" by Donald M. Schlegel. On the ship "George", Captain Craig, 56 days from Belfast, arrived at New York on Oct. 14, 1815. James Dobson, Susan Dobson, John Dobson, William Dobson, Mary Dobson, and Fannie Dobson Also one other book found was, "The Surnames of Ireland" by Edward MacLysaght. Shannon, Ireland. page 73 says that the Dobson name was fairly numerous in Co.Leitrim. What is Co. Leitrim? A county? My husbands family is said to be from Maryland but I have no info on that as his mother divorced when he was a child and no one seems to know anything. His father is still alive in MD but he is not mentally well so no help there. So all we have is his fathers name. Where can I start? Can I get his fathers birth certificate since he is still alive? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Diane

    2. Dear Cher, I would have the shawl cleaned or wash it gently in woolite, and store it in a pillowcase. Plastic is not good for fabric. All of my old quilts are either in my ceder chest or in my linen closet in a pillowcase to protect from the dust. If you need to put a moth repellant in with them, make sure it does not touch the object as it can cause discoloration. You are very luck and I loved your ideas on keeping the story with the object. 3. Alley's comments about plastic is very true...you may want to consider wrapping the garments in archival tissue paper (acid free) then putting them in a closed drawer with a couple of mothballs (yes, they do stink, but they are the most effective way to keep bugs away). You'll want to take them out every year and refold them so the garments don't stress at fold areas. Wool garments should last indefinitely if the buggies are kept at bay and protected from light (it's one of the nicest fabrics, since it is fairly inert chemically, so it should last). For instance, as a teen, I worked in a historic house where a trunk had been found in renovations. Inside there was a blanket with a note that it had been found on Boston Common after the British evacuation in the Revolutionary War. The blanket itself felt soft and not apparently old, and some of us doubted its age--but an expert evaluation of the blanket and its markings validated that it was actually a military issued blanket from the British military of the day. Of course, there are other factors that can erode wool's durability--for instance, some of the early analine dyes (used mostly in the Victorian era) ended up degrading the dyed fabric. Keeping track of provenance is exceedingly important--its the only way to provide a way for future generations to understand the material culture of our time and of our forebears. As for preserving anything of wool, cotton, linen......I read recently that these things must get air to survive. Plastic is going to ruin anything (notice the warning on the baggie over your newly dry cleaned garment, to remove immediately). I've been buying cedar chests at garage sales for about $100 each. They're each about 50 years old and new ones are 4 to 5 times that price. Two of mine are by Lane. I feel like I'm stealing them at that price. They are great for keeping things stored for ages. It may have been one of Myra Gormley's articles I read a few months back that mentioned what to do with quilts, etc. Check Ancestry.com for her archived articles and see if it's there. 3. Elaine, I'm very curious about your Vollentine Dodson. I have a William V. Dotson, b. TN, son of John b. 1788 VA, son of Charles b. c1770 VA who acording to Lucas and is a Dangling Dodson. I sure would like to stop dangling. I'm probably grasping as straws here, but.... I always speculated that the V. in William's name stood for Valentine or some other unusual name, but never ran across an "V" Dodsons until now. I'm now wondering if your Vollentine might be my William V's uncle? William lived in Westmoreland, TN. Any connection?
