Julie-- A lot of your questions about the John Dods at Jamestown, as well as the bad news on Durhams, Hunts and Smoots, can be found at Alley's web site. Unfortunately I can't find her address, but since she's the Dodson list owner, I'm sure she'll jump in with it any moment! Your observation is correct, it's too romantic for it's own good! There is a file circulating among some researchers - although documentation, when requested, was scant - which indicates the first emigrant establishing the line was "John DODS," born about 1588; said to be one of the original 103 founders of Jamestown Colony. This same file shows him married to "Jane, daughter of Eagle Plume, Chief of Iroquois." Although Iroquois roamed freely in the area North into Canada, it was Powhattan's People found in Virginia and in the area of Jamestown. John DODS was said to have two sons, Jesse/Jessie and William DODSON, presumably from hus union with Jane. Both were said to have taken brides from a "Bride Ship" from England. This file states Jesse DODSON, born about 1623, married Judith HAGGER, born about 1627 in England. There is so much that's "romantic" about this report...it is impossible to accept without much further study. This information surely isn't new to others researching DODSON - and I would love to hear your comments. I descend from Greenham DODSON and Elinor HIGHTOWER, through his daughter, Elinor, born about 1743, and her second husband, Thomas TAYLOR. If the line of Ancestors is correct, Greenham was the son of Thomas DODSON and Mary May DURHAM; Thomas, son of Charles DODSON and Anne ELMORE; and Charles, son of Jesse DODSON and Judith HAGGER. Looking for proof on all accounts "pre- Greenham!" With best regards from a fellow-seeker, Julia Ann GILPIN (Julie Kosmata Elliott)
Hello everyone, I have a Dodson puzzle that is driving me nuts. I have been doing considerable research on Margaret Dodson trying to connect her to her right parents. This is what I have found so far. One of my sources says that she was born Nov. 10, 1843. Her tombstone says that she was born Nov. 10, 1833, a ten year discrepency. She married Coleman Smith on 31 Dec. 1857 in Rhea co. TN, which means that she was either 14 or 24 when she married. 1860 census she is listed as 23 years old (birth 1837) 1870 census she is 25 years old ( birth 1845) 1880 census she is 39 years old (birth 1841) I could find no census for 1890 and she died Jan 9 1892 in Rhea co. TN. Here is another very interesting, possible clue. In the 1850 census I found the family of Samuel Dotson and his wife Frances with a daughter Margaret who was about 10 years old (born about 1840) living a few doors down from the family of Richard and Eliza Smith who have 17 year old Coleman living with them. It seems like a strong clue except that none of the dates match. Does anyone have any information about this Samuel Dotson or who his children married? I think that this may be the same Samuel Dotson (they were born the same year) listed in the S.E. Lucas book who was born in Grainger co. Tn and in 1820 married a Miss Williams. I hope that someone out there will have some information about this family. I can be reached at lima-lima@msn.com Thanks, Debbie

We have many Dodsons living in Clay, Randolph, and Lawrence counties Arkansas. Our info is very limited, I have a Benjamin Franklin Dodson married to Delia, with daughters Rhoda Bell and Lillie May. Rhoda married a Harkness and Lillie married a Holt. Rhoda was born in 1880. These families left Arkansas in 1936 for Oregon. We believe they had a son Benjamin, and maybe Charlie. If you see any connection, please reply to <jwhite@pionet.net> as I am in the process of changing servers. Thanks Judy

Low gap between Buck Run & Yeager Run following Buck Run to right hand fork. Believe he gave Emmanuel and William a portion of this land. Until WWII owned by Richard Dotson's descendents. Richard's daughter Ruth married a James Cain who served under Capt John Bozarth. Reference Indian episode where a Mrs Bozarth saved Richard Dotson from being killed by Indian. And note an Isaac Bozarth in above 1st battalion. The Bertha Sellers Dotson information/Barr Wilson and the Franks Family history say that Richard m Sarah Jeanne Hollyday about 1772. They may accept that much, but suggest information beyond Sarah is incorrect. On June 1, 1840 Richard Dotson was age 88 and living with James Dotson Sorry this is so wordy, but hope springs eternal I might link him up some day. My "pet theory" has always been that he descended from Bartholomew Richard's son James whose birth is recorded never to be heard from again. Betty

Developer's lobbies will see to it. The general public will tolerate it. Therefore, we may be well advised to consider an alternative before further damage is done. How about a law that provides as follows: Any person or organization which owns or controls a cemetery and intends to alter it for whatever reason shall, as a minimum, perform the following acts prior to making such alteration. 1. Make a pictorial and textual record of all physical historical or genealogical elements of such cemetery. Such record shall be of a quality and completeness that will provide a researcher with all of the facts that could have been found by examining the cemetery before alteration. 2. Such record shall include but not be limited to the geographical location, a plat showing the location and name of the occupant (when known) of individual graves, a good quality picture of each grave marker, and pictures of the general location and layout of such cemetery. 3. Legible, reproducible copies of such record shall be filed with the State Library or State Archives, as applicable, of the State within which the cemetery is located prior to altering such cemetery. The person or organization filing such record shall obtain and retain an official receipt for same. 4. The penalty for violating this law shall be severe enough to make compliance economically advantageous to the person or organization planning to make such alterations. 5. The term "cemetery" includes any burial or internment site for human beings. ****************** No doubt the language can be improved but the provisions must be reasonable enough to gain the support of organizations such as Library Associations, Historical Societies, Genealogical Societies, the DAR, and similar state and national organizations. They must also be reasonable enough to make the expected protests of developers unacceptable to legislators and the general public. Any reader who has connections or influence with any of these societies or associations is free to forward this proposal to them. Hopefully, some of them will develop it and pursue implementation. I am trying to find a link to some Dodsons in Arkansas (which I have found that there are tons of them in AR). I am looking for information on Charlie Lee Dodson and I believe he has a brother named Jay. He lived in or near Waldo and Hope at one time. He (Charlie) was born in the early 1900's. He moved to Dallas and died in the 1980's. Hope someone has a connection. Thanks Rhonda Dodson

do you have address for English surname list? thanks, Cyndi Rutledge Baltimore (Dodsons in 1600's in VA)
Here is information from the 2-vol. Dodson book regarding a Richard Dotson whose ancestry is not factually proven. It is believed that he descends from a Samuel Dotson who immigrated from England and married a Sarah Smoot, sister of William Smoot, Sr. Many have tried to find a connection between Dorothy (Smoot???) Durham whose descendants married into the Dodsons. Dorothy could be a daughter or other relative of William Smoot, Sr. We still aren't sure. Now we have another early Dotson-Smoot marriage that brings on more questions. Does anyone have any further ideas on this? Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org _________________________________ On pp. 1176-1177 of the Dodson book is this information: "Richard Dotson of Shenandoah Co., VA and Tyler Co., WV "I Richard Dotson was born 23 Oct 1752 in Shenandoah Co., VA and died after 1847 in Doddridge Co., VA [now WVA]. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, serving a tour of duty under Lord Dunmore against the western Indians in 1774, at which time he was a resident of Greene Co., PA. He had moved to Greene Co., PA when he was about twenty years of age (about 1772). He returned to Shenandoah Co., VA and in the spring of 1777, volunteered in Capt. Minor's Co. of Virginia Militia. He also served six months of each year, 1778 and 1779 with Capt. Minor. "After the war he remained in Shenandoah Co. for a few years, then moved to Louden Co., VA for about two years, then to Hampshire Co., VA, for six years, then to Wood Co., VA and lived alternately in Wood and Tyler Counties up to 1832 when he applied for a pension [Rev. pension S5364]. There are some other papers in Richard Dotson's pension file which may be of interest to descendants. There is a deposition of Ann Reddick, taken in Tyler Co., WV on 7 May 1833 by personal appearance before James Stealey, JP. Ann Reddick was aged 95 years on the 23 day last September and testified that she lived in Greene Co., PA in 1777, 1778, and 1779 and was acquainted with Richard Dotson, and knew he served 18 months as stated. She was often an inmate of Jenkins Fort while he was serving. "Also in this pension file is a letter from Mrs. Anna L. Shumate, 5443 Madison Rd., Madisonville, Cincinnati, OH dated 12 May 1931 who was seeking the death date of Richard Dotson, and also inquiring for Elisha Dotson's war record. A letter to her from the pension office on 12 Aug 1930 was addressed to 3561 Paxton Ave., Hyde Park, Cincinnati, OH. On 28 June 1930, James T. Thornton wrote on letterhead: Treasury Department, Bureau of Prohibition, Washington, DC, requesting 'copies of all records on Richard Dotson's service record - a soldier, probably of Maryland - needed to expedite the settlement of an old estate.' "The parents of Richard Dotson are not known. When he was born, Shenandoah Co. was a part of Frederick Co., VA so further search should be made there. It is possible that he came from one of the Pennsylvania Dodson families. Many of the residents of this area of the Valley of Virginia had come from Luzerne Co., PA at an early day. It still remained possible that Richard descended from one of the sons of Charles Dodson, Sr. of Richmond Co., VA. Descendants of Richard Dotson have quoted several legends concerning his ancestry. None of them are proven. One states that seven brother came to Penn's colony and that two of the brothers settled near Richmond, VA. Their names were William and James (Richard) Dotson. James had three sons: William, Zachariah and Richard. "Another of these legends states that our subject, Richard Dotson, descended from Samuel Dotson, b. c1675, who came to America in 1692 aboard the ship Assurance from England. He married Sarah Smoot, a sister of William Smoot. They presumably had a son, Abraham Dotson, b. 13 Jan 1690, England who married Elizabeth Dameron (b. 18 April 1692). They in turn had a son Thomas Dotson, b. 4 Nov 1731, Northumberland Co., VA, who was married to Frances Minor. This Thomas Dodson died in Westmorelanld Co., VA about 1668, leaving a will naming wife Frances and son Thomas, a minor. Some of this legend has originated with Mrs. Sandy Miller of Starke, FL who several years ago earned a reputation for selling phony pedigrees. There has bee no PROOF offered for the ancestry of Richard Dotson of Shendandoah Co., VA and Tyler and Doddridge Co., WV. "Some have said that Richard Dotson was married four times. The first wife was supposedly Sarah Jeane Holliday (b. 6 Dec 1752, Easton, MD). They say that she was the mother of Peter Dotson, Sarah Dotson, William Dotson (md. Mary Franks) and John R. Dotson, all of whom, expected William, were killed by Indians. His second wife was supposedly Mary [surname unknown] who was the mother of eleven more of Richard Dotson's children. The third wife was Amelia Miller (d. 1810/19, Doddridge Co., VA) who was married in 1802 who was the mother of four of Richard Dotson's children. His final marriage was said to have been to Naomi Gregg (widow) who had one daughter. This adds up to twenty children born between the 1770's and 1816. There are no records given which show the names of the wives of Richard Dotson......marriage records or deeds naming a wife. "One of the problems of this research is that Richard Dotson chose to move to the 'no-man's land' of West Augusta. This is an area covering western Virginia (including present West Virginia), western Maryland and southwestern Pennsylvania which boundaries remained in dispute throughout the period of the Revolution and many years later. One must search the records of all three states, and then the records are few as the region was so remote from the seats of all three states, and the population of the area for this period was so sparse. "We are giving below two version of the lineages submitted by different people, who claim descent from Richard Dotson, in the hopes that this will offer clues to future researchers who will wish to try to verify the data. The land was granted to Michael Gratz in 1786, and John Dotson was the second owner. After his store operator absconded with a considerable amount of money, John was forced to sell this farm to pay outstanding bills. He bought a smaller farm northeaster of Harrisville in Ritchie Co. and moved his family there in 1860. There he lived until his death in 1880. A son-in-law, Henry P. At least two people have asked me about this William Dodson, so I have typed up the info that is given in the 2-Vol. Dodson book that tells about William Dodson and his donating of land for the town square or county seat of Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY. All of this comes from the book by Mrs. Sherman Williams and Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. on the Dodson family. It is a lengthy work entailing 2 volumes and over 2,000 pages. I've copied all the info. on William Dodson, who was a brother of my ancestor, Aggatha (Dodson) Hanks who married Moses Hanks. Also there is reference to a Reubin Hill. The best I can determine, this is Reubin Hill (1761-1833) who married Joyce Hanks, the oldest daughter of Moses and Aggatha (Dodson) Hanks. William is listed as #173 in the book. He appears to have been a medical doctor and quite an entrepreneur of land. He was never married. Upon William's death, his father, Thomas "2nd Fork" Dodson, became "heir-at-law" of William's estate, and transferred much of the land to the brothers of sisters of William Dodson. Only one or two paragraphs really deals with the town square at Somerset, but I went ahead and included the entire record on William Dodson from the book. I also have a newspaper article, "Who Really Owns the Town Square?" that talks about William donating property for the town square. Sincerely, Glenn Gohr ggohr01@mail.orion.org __________________________ "173. William Dodson - William was born in Virginia at an unknown date. According to a document recorded in Halifax Co., VA Will Bk 9 (1811-1814), p. 142, William died 22 Dec 1809, probably in Kentucky, but the location has not been precisely determined. William Dodson was not married. His real and personal property was scattered over several states, and the settlement of his estate provides us with the names of his brothers and sisters who were his eventual heirs. Samuel Dodson, brother of William, qualified as administrator of the estate on 22 Jan 1810. The account of sales shows: - property sold in Franklin Co., TN to: Jesse Dodson, Alexander Hittson, Wm. Winsor, Ambrose Barker, Jacob Vanzant, Wm. Quesenbury, John Athens and Wm. Bean. - property sold in Halifax Co., VA to: Lemuel Moore, Alexander Hittson and Samuel Dodson. - property sold in Cumberland Co., KY, to Jesse Dodson, James Wilson, Col. Samuel Wilson, Larkin Turner, Wm. Wyatt, Roger Simerton, Maj. Hulet and James Gee. Most of the property was drugs, medicines, surgical items and medical books, indicating that William might have been a physician. The account current was recorded in 1814. Payments were as follows: - to Jacob Vanzant for William Dodson's board - tax on land (location not stated) - to William Dodson and James Dodson's accounts. Also mentioned were Asa Dodson, Thomas Dodson, Jesse Dodson, Stokely Slayden, Moses Dodson and Bunnion Dodson. [Jacob Vanzant, who was paid for boarding William Dodson, was one of the first settlerls (1812) of Franklin Co., TN, coming there from Rutherford Co., NC according to history.] On March 23, 1811, Hawkins Co., TN [deed 6-475], Thomas (x) Dodson made a deed of gift to his son, William Dodson, to whom he became "heir-at-law" at the son's death. He named his children as William Johnson, James Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Jesse Dodson and Samuel Dodson to whom he relinquished his claim on the estate and allotted to each of them $100. The remainder of the estate was to be divided equally between William, James and Stephen Johnson, Rhodar Hittson, James Dodson, Jesse and Samuel Dodson, and additionally to Samuel Dodson, one lot in the town of Pulaski for his special services [apparently as administrator of the estate]. Lot #25 was obviously in the town of Somerset, Pulaski Co.,. KY. William Dodson received a grant from Kentucky to 200 acres on Sinking Creek, Pulaski Co. on 25 July 1799. In Feb 1801, William Dodson of Grainger Co., TN gave power of attorney to Reubin Hill of Pulaski Co., KY to transact business regarding a tract of land in Pulaski Co., [Pulaski deed 1-40/42]. Also in Feb 1801, William gave bond (with Reubin Hill and Moses Hanks, securities) to the Justices of Pulaski Co. for the conveyance of 40 acres for the site of the county seat [Pulaski deed 1-55A/55B]. In March 1802, he delivered the actual deed, excepting two lots, #25 and #26 [Pulaski deed 1-66/69]. In June 1804, William Dodson of Hardin Co., KY sold 12 1/2 acres to William Fox on the waters of adjoining two acres William had given his bond to make a title to the Sinking Creek Church [Pulaski deed 1-162/165]. In Grainger Co., TN deed, William Dodson was described as "late of Hardin Co., KY," Jan 1806 [B-56], when he sold a tract in Grainger Co. to Stephen Johnson. The deed was proved by the witnesses Joseph Stubblefield and James Johnson in Nov 1806, indicating that William Dodson was probably not living in Grainger Co. at this time. In May 1807, William Dodson of Cumberland Co., KY sold the two acres to the United Baptist Church of Sinking Creek, adjoining the town of Somerset [Pulaski deed 2-33]. William Dodson possessed certain lands in Hawkins and Grainger Co.'s, TN by virtue of perhaps state grants as no deeds of purchase have been found. In Dec 1797, William Dodson sold to William Johnson, both of Hawkins Co., 150 acres on the south side of Holston River [Hawkins deed 2-362]. In Jan 1798, William Dodson of Hawkins Co., TN sold Thomas Cunningham 112 acres on Camp Branch, Grainger Co. [Grainger deed 2-65]. On Nov 26 1800, William Dodson of Grainger Co. sold 80 acres to the heirs of Reuben Webster [Grainger deed A-196] and on 10 Jan 1806, William Dodson "late of Harden Co., KY" sold to Stephen Johnson four acres on an island in Holston River, Grainger Co. [Grainger deed B-56]. William Dodson was certainly an entrepreneur. It is possible that he died in Franklin Co., TN." (Source: Williams, Mrs. Sherman, compiler and editor.
