Have you ever been in contact with Marge Dodson Lingenfelter or Frannie Schragen-Petras? Both of them have lots of research. Marge is connected to the ones who were in Cambria Co. I believe her ancestor was William, one of the brothers of Michael and John (I think I have that straight). My Thomas was in Bedford Co., Greenfield Twp. near Michael and his family in the 1800 census. I don't remember if I looked for him in 1790 or not, but he probably would have been in the area of Gettysburg then. His wife was supposed to have been Molly Seabrook, and his son was Joseph Seabrook Dodson, b ca 1792 in Chambersburg or Gettysburg (I've seen it both ways). Thomas (and Joseph later, listed as "of Thomas") were in the tax records for Greenfield Twp. A couple of Joseph's daughters married Lingenfelters. His oldest daughter was my ggg-gm, Dorothy, who married Jacob Shaffer, whose family was in Bedford Co. I ! have a big file on Dodsons, but haven't done much with it in the last couple of years. I had forgotten that a Dodson was a mayor in Hollidaysburg, so thank you for jogging my memory. That's a great idea. I'm curious too...did your Thomas show in a Cumberland County census at one point...memory is slipping on what year..early 1800s maybe? Also, have you found his ancestral line? We've embarked on this overwhelming task of who all the Dodsons we've found in Pa., and at least Frederick County, Md. were, and how they connect (if they connect). He was a mystery to us still. I'd like to share our site with you...maybe you would have some time to look it over. We tracked Michael of Thomas and Mary, and because of wills of John Evans and William Evans are sure that the Michael in Frederick, Md. was the Michael of Thomas Dodson in Chester. So, we definitely agree there. There were several who moved from Frederick to Bedford, and wound up in different counties as new counties formed. Several allied families from Frederick also moved into Bedford and Fayette Counties with the Dodsons, i.e. Farquhars, Lingenfelters, Justices, Brightwell, and some others. Thanks again, Janet. Author: JanetEbaugh Surnames: Dodson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dodson/1957.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Linda, it is likely that the Michael Dodson living in MD was the son of Thomas and Mary Prigg. He is also probably the Michael Dodson who ended up in the area of East Freedom, Blair Co., PA. My own ancestor, Thomas Dodson, was from the Gettysburg area, and he moved to the East Freedom area himself a few years after Michael, so it is likely they were related, but how is not known. There are still lots of Dodsons in Blair Co., including the mayor of Hollidaysburg. Perhaps if he joined the DNA project the connection between the ones in Blair Co. and the ones further east could be verified. Just a suggestion. Author: trackingancestors Surnames: Dodson, Prigg Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dodson/1957/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Are there any Dodson family members who have proven their line back to either Richard Dodson or his brother, (John) William Dodson, sons of Thomas and Mary Prigg Dodson of Chester County, Pennsylvania? Recently, several descendants of Richard Dodson, Sr., b. 10/23/1752 in Frederick Co., Va. participated in DNA testing, and results have shown that they are genetically linked to Michael Dodson (Doddson, etc.) who lived in Frederick County, Md. We have found significant information to believe that Michael actually was the son of Thomas and Mary Prigg Dodson of Chester Co., Pa., and so brother to Richard and (John) William. Have any male lineal descendants from either Richard or William Dodson of Chester Co., Pa. participated in DNA studies? Is anyone of those lines considering DNA studies? Please post. We have a very strong theory, after 30 years of searching, as to who the father of Richard of Frederick Co., Virginia was; however with the records having been destroyed in wars, we are hoping there may be a Chester Co. Dodson, known to be sons of Thomas and Mary Prigg Dodson, who has been or is considering participation in the DNA studies. The DNA study requires that the participant be from an unbroken line of male ancestors of the surname. It's past time to tie all these Dodsons together if possible. Please post. Candis was born, according to cemetery records, on July 4, 1809, and married to W. G. Thorp in 1821. I suppose that this is not impossible, but it seems highly unlikely. The Dodson's were in the area very early and that is sourced. As to slaves it depended on the family member, their wealth and occupation. Some of my line did hold slaves and did not. Some fought on the Union side and others on the South so a general sweeping statement can not be made. Keep looking, lots of info is out there for the Pitt. Dodsons. Lots of information there. The Richmond Dodsons were on it, but it seems Betty may have taken it down. Trust me...she still has it. Her email is at bottom of each page. We always thought we descended from the Richmond (Charles) Dodsons also. DNA proved that we are genetically linked to Michael Dodson of Maryland. Just do not trust things you find on the internet for your family history UNLESS it is sourced...from other than Ancestry, Family History trees, and even many of those posted online. To be sure of who you are, we all have to make certain everything in our line is sourced/documented/referenced. BTW, we have uncovered what appears to be some serious flaws in Reverend Ege's book. The only trace I've found is 1870 census for Rolla & Mary Dodson, living in Clay, Dunklin Co., MO with 6 children, one of whom was Emma, age 5. Do any of these names sound familiar?
