Hi Diana: I descend from John C Dodson whose parents were in Fairfax County, Virginia beginning about 1796 or so. I have not followed those who remained in Fairfax County as John C Dodson went to Georgia arriving there about 1805. My grandmother (Edna Lorraine born 1906-died 1935) was the last in my line of Dodsons. I have a Dodson cousin, a descendant of our ancestor, John C Dodson, who has ordered a DNA kit and should be submitting his sample very soon . A descendant of John C's uncle who also went to Georgia in 1805 has already taken the DNA test. The test of the distant cousin did not match those of other Dodsons in the test group meaning there is no relationship between our group and the others. Please let me know how you connect to the Dodsons of Fairfax County. I would be interested in knowing more about them, who they were and what about them. As stated above I have done little to no research on them in Fairfax County. Hope this helps someone. I think the best way to back up genealogical/historical research is going to be DNA testing. I urge anyone with Dodsons in their family to try to locate someone, no matter how far distant related they are, to participate in the Dodson (or any other surname) DNA Project. Once we start getting some of our English cousnis to participate it is possible a Dodson family in the US may match one in England and we would be able to get some idea of origin in the mother country. It also works when we find a Dodson living someowhere in the US and they match another whose lineage can be traced back to VA, MD PA or elsewhere. As a result of the English Civil War in the 1660's there was an over flux of immigrants from the British Isles to America, Virginia in particular. There is no telling how many Dodsons might have immigrated. If they were related to those already here or not we may never know. Everyone seems to want to say they descend from the Richmond County, VA Dodsons. This is normal since they are the best written up line. However, the following list shows there were several other early Dodsons and people with other surnames that may have been Dodson or their names may have been misspelled and sometimes miscontrued in the records as Dodson. Did Charles Dodson of Richmond county come to Virginia as an immigrant or was he native born, a possible descendant of one other earlier Dodsons? From Greers' Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666 there are the following Dodsons, etc: The first named is the immigrant. The second is the person who obtained land as a patent. The person paying the passage of an immigrant was eligible for 50 acres of land per person for whom he paid their passage. The year is the year of the patent not neccssarily the year of immigration. The year of immigration may have recent or years previous. Also, I am told there was cheating by those applying for land. I have heard one Virginian would claim paying the passage of an immigrant. He would sell the services of that person to another Virginian and that person might well claim land for payment of passage of the same person. The person whose passage was paid for might enter into a contract called an indenture. Thus he might be condsidered an Indentured Servant. Sometimes these indentured persons might be tradesmen such as caprenters, stone masons, wheelrights, or teachers. Not all were laborers. Plus some may well have been family members of the person paying the transporation. People sailing from England could pay their own passage and that of anyone they wished. Often you will see a man paying his own and the passage of his wife and children or other relatives. Often it does not stipulate any relationship between the person paying the passage and the person for whom's passage is being paid. Those not having money for passage or those sentenced by courts ni England or for any other reason may owe the captain of the boat for their passage. Boats from England and elsewhere would just sail up a river and dock at a person's dock and ask if they needed any laborers. If the person in Virginia paid the passage of a passenger to the captain he would be eligible for the 50 acres "headright" incentive. These headright claims were applied for through court and the Virginia Assembly and this is the source of the record we are using. It is all about money. We are are using financial records for genealogical purposes. Please note this list only goes to 1666. I am not sure if that is when the land incentive stopped or if for some reason that is when the compiler stopped looking. I seem to recall that year may have been when the incentive stopped. Also prior to 1624 The Virginia Company had control of Virginia. It was a stock holding company. People did not own the land, the company did. People who came to Virginia had been promised land in payment fo rtheir service but it was not until after 1624 they ever started getting of the land. That is when the company turned the colony back to the Crown as a failed enterprise. In the land records one will see people getting land as Ancient Planters and also as having been in the colony prior to the turning over of the colony to the Crown. Antcient Planters wer epeople who had been in the colony at an early stipulated date. John Dods would have been there since 1607 and probably would have been considered an ancient planter. As a caveate it is possible (meaning I am not sure) he might not have been an ancient planter as his occupation was a laborer and soldier rather than planter. One would have to see the rules for being considered under the category Ancient Planter and getti! ng land for that title.
