This is similar to what I've seen as well. I'm pretty sure my GG Grandfather was born in the Chambersburg area so this most likely his him. I had his father being born in MD though. Not many male Dodsons left in this line for testing, but I'll see what I can find out. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. William Mayberry Dodson (born about 1880 and descendant of a John Dodson, one of the earliest Dodsons in Bedford/Blair County) is the source of the Thomas m Molly Seabrook information with a 'Levan' as father. He wrote "Thomas Dodson, born at Valley Forge, son of Levan, lived and married to Molly Seabrook. Then moved to Chambersburg where they lived. I have no further record of them except they had at least one son. Joseph Dodson, son of Thomas, born near Chambersburg..." A Thomas Dodson is first named in 1798 in the tax list of Bedford County PA along with John Dodson and Michael Dodson in Woodbury Township. He is showing as a miller, owns his home and 150 acres. 1800 Census Name: Thomas Dodson Township: Hopewell and Woodberry County: Bedford State: Pennsylvania Free White Males Under 10: 1 (born 1790 to 1800) Free White Males 10 to 15: 1 (born 1785 to 1790) Free White Males 45 and Over : 1 (born before 1755) Free White Females 16 to 25 : 1 (born 1775 to 1784) Number of Household Members Under 16 : 2 Number of Household Members Over 25 : 1 Number of Household Members: 4 In 1814 a Thomas is listed as a farmer and cooper, age 68 - Taxable in the Twpship of Greenfield, PA - which would make his DOB around 1746. Burial Dodson Cemetery East Freedom Twp, Blair County, PA - age 90 years 13 days. PA Veteran's Card This Thomas is believed to be the father of Joseph Dodson born in 1792 who married Susan Conrad. Some have said Joseph was born "near Chambersburg, PA" (Franklin County, PA). 1850 census shows that he was born in PA. Joseph had a son named Levi (don't know if this is a clue). 1820 tax list Bedford County Greenfield Twp Joseph of Thomas - farmer There is a Joseph S Dodson listed in a tax list in Bedford County PA in 1823. I have seen the name Hurley in connection with Calvert or Charles County Maryland Dodsons but not with Pennsylvania Dodsons. There are documented connections to Maryland with the Bedford/Blair Dodsons, but the connections are to Frederick County Maryland. We have hoped that a male Dodson of this line would have a YDNA test to see if there is a connection to the Frederick MD or Chester County PA Dodsons who migrated to Bedford. In some posts/records he is the son of a Thomas Dodson of MD, in others, John Hurley Dodson. I believe these two men were brothers, but only one can be his father. The name Jane came through the Christianized version of Necotowance. She was the sister of Pocahontas and she is the one that married John *Dods* Dodson. My brother's test tracked back to borderland of Scotland and England; I heard on a PBS special that Lincolnshire was the architectural style of Jamestown. Anyway, I doubt the wife of a so-many great grandfather would show up in DNA--it would be about 1/1000 at this point. But the break of documents from James Dodds' (and some still dispute him as a Dodson) to Charles is not unexpected for a common laborer. So either the Native Am. part and/or the lower class status part make it unlikely that documents will be found. But the archeological evidence is a 3rd strand to consider. Good luck. I keep hoping that in this age of social media, someone SOMEWHERE will come forward with a copy of an old family document (Bible, will, family letter) that will help put the pieces together - at least to tie Charles to Jesse - if not back to John. So many generations...so many descendants, but as you both acknowledge, the oral histories are so similar and too much so to be coincidence. Strong probability is there - now if only we could find the truth. Maybe one day! Thanks again. By the way, my father and I both took the ancestry DNA test (for ethnicity) recently and his results (11th generation), showed no signs of native american DNA, mine showed 3% unknown (origins too small to trace- which of course could come from my maternal lineage, since my father did not have same indicators). We both show the strong European/English heritage, and are not surprised that ONE (potential) native american ancestor in 12 gene! rations did not show thru in the results. But in the "for what it's worth" department, that's the latest from this Dodson line! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Native Americans place a great store in oral histories; European traditions do not. Documents for a laborer like John Dodds' (and yes, the apostrophe in English shorthand of the day indicates "son") would be scanty. If he married a Native woman, probably common law, it would not be in the records. New archaeology at the Jamestown site indicate, for the first time in documented history, the presence of Native women within the settlement. Their grinding stones and other daily objects are being found. This corraborates the oral history. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The truth is only in the oral histories of thousands of descendants, who all reveal basically the same stories; John Dods married a Native American. In my case, as a child I was told that she was related to Pocahontas, I have come to believe that she was either a sister or a cousin. Of course the English Virginia Company, did not always convey the truth in the conditions and living arrangements of the settlers. Many of the settlers co-habituated with the Native Americans, but this of course was not the correct English rules of marriage as they were not Christian. Therefore, marriages and baptism records may have never existed. John Dods survived, and in the 1623/24 was only 1 of 3 persons who was still living in Virginia from the original settlers of 1607.
