On the farm of General William Henry Harrison where her parents lived she met and married Reuben Clark Holmes. Holmes served as Constable of Cleves (or North Bend), OH, at the same time that Scott Harrison, father of the General, was serving as justice of the peace in the same town. Virginia (Holmes) Southworth, a great-great granddaughter of Reuben and Mary (Disbrow) Holmes, has a copy of a deed, dated 16 Nov. 1833, wherein William H. Harrison and wife Anna quit claimed to Reuben C. Holmes a lot in the town of Cleves for $1. Virginia and another descendant, Marsha Heberlein, have supplied all of my data on this family. (20 Nov. 1794) NY d. 9 Apr. 1868 Waterloo, Seneca Co., NY (age 73-4-20) Zalmon was probably about a year old when his parents moved from Saratoga Co., NY to what was then Cayuga Co., later Seneca Co., NY. His father was one of the original settlers in the town of Washington, which later became Waterloo. Zalmon served in the War of 1812, entering the militia 10 Sep. 1812 as a Corporal in Capt. Samuel Jack's company, in the 7th NY Artillery under Col. Walter Greaves. He served on the Niagara frontier, was at the battle of Queenston, at Fort Niagara and in "several skirmishes." He was honorably discharged at Junius, NY, 20 or 25 Dec. 1812. On 25 Sep. 1813 he re-enlisted as a Corporal in Lt. John R. Harris's co., 7th NY Artillery, marched to Ft. Niagara and into Canada where he "helped fire the village of Newark [Ont.]" Honorably discharged Jan. 1814 at Tonawanda Creek (near Buffalo). In 1816 Zalmon opened a cooper's shop in Waterloo (the first one in that village) but he sold it the following year. After that time he appears to have moved to Phelps, Ontario Co., NY, where he lived until 1826, then moved back to Waterloo where he remained the rest of his life. In the 1850 census of Waterloo, Z. A. Disbrow, age 55, had no occupation listed. With him were Eliz. 55, C. J. 28, S. E. 12 and Elias 24 (a blacksmith - not identified, perhaps not related,) all b. NY. Elsewhere in Waterloo was Zalmon's son Elias, age 34, and his family. In 1860, Zalmon A. Disbrow, age 66, with his occupation listed as "Gentleman", was listed with his wife "Wilizabeth", age 65. In 1870 a 76-year-old Zalmon was keeping a boarding house in Waterloo. He was known locally as General Disbrow, not from any rank earned in his War of 1812 service, but probably from local militia or an honorary title. From the Rochester, NY "Union & Advertiser" of 9 June 1867: "Gen. Z. A. Disbrow, veteran of the War of 1812, was present at the meeting held in the National Hotel." And in the same paper, 22 May 1869: "Z. A. Disbrow of Waterloo, commander of Veterans of 1812, calls a meeting for applications for relief of needy veterans." ( ) b. c1822 Ireland She m. previously to ( ) Reid and had dau. Sophia Reid b. c1858 Ira, as he was usually referred to, moved to Norfolk Co., Ontario with his parents about 1810 from Seneca Co., NY. Early on he was called to serve in the local militia units against his former country during the War of 1812, as were his father and uncle Israel Disbrow. Bob Mosher examined the muster and pay rolls of the Norfolk Co. Militia and found that "Pvt. Eirey Disbrow" served in the 2nd regiment under Capt. William Robinson from 25 May through 24 July 1814. And from 25 Sep. to 24 Oct. of that year he served again in the 2nd regiment under Capt. Henry Medcalf. His brother Almon Disbrow also served under Capt. Robinson during the earlier term. Ira was a cooper by trade and apparently moved from place to place in Norfolk Co. as the records show. In the census records he was in Townsend Twp. in 1844, Charlotteville Twp. in 1861, Walsingham Twp. in 1881. According to Bob Mosher Ira petitioned for a property lease 18 Nov. 1819 in Windham Twp. The petition stated that Ira had a wife and one child and had been an inhabitant of Norfolk Co. for 9 years. At this time he was illiterate and his occupation was laborer. He took the Oath of Allegiance 19 Nov. 1819 and on 15 Dec., Reserve Lot 4, 1st Concession, was ordered as a lease to Ira Desbrough. Other land sales involving Ira Disbrow were found in Norfolk Co. deed books as follows: 22 Apr. 1824 - John McInally of Windham to Ira Disbrow, cooper, of Windham. 100 a. S1/2 Lot 1, Conc. 8, Windham Twp. [deeds E:514] 9 Feb. 1828 - Ira Disbrow of Townsend to John Sadler of Towns- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 235 (3-2-4-1) ALVIN IRA-6 DISBROW, cont'd end. 90 a. Witnessed by Zalmon A. Disbrow of Townsend. [G:221] 21 Nov. 1843 - Ira Disbrow to William Woolley. 100 a. S1/2 of Lot 3, Conc, 7, Townsend Twp. [IJ:183] In Apr. 1875 Ira applied for and received a pension as a veteran of the War of 1812. Ira was 80 at this time and living in Lynedoch. His name appears on the pension lists for 1879 and 1881. Very little is known about Ira's wives. The first appears in the Rowland Disbrow family Bible, the others in marriage records found in Norfolk Co. His children are equally elusive. Lewis was called the "first born son" of Alvin Ira in the above mentioned Bible record. Eliza Disbrow Swain and Ira were buried in the same cemetery lot and Ira appears in the household of Gilbert and Eliza Swain in the 1881 census. Cynthia was listed with Ira in 1861 and is presumed to have been his daughter. There is less evidence to link Sylvanus with Ira, however because of his age and proximity to the other Disbrows of Norfolk Co., he is believed to have been a grandson of Rowland Disbrow, and Ira is the only one of Rowland's sons known to have been married at the time of Sylvanus' birth. Cayuga Co., NY d. 5 Aug. 1877 Simcoe, Norfolk Co,, Ontario Almon was about 14 when his parents moved to Norfolk Co., Ontario from their native New York. A couple of years later the War of 1812 began and his father and uncle Israel Disbrow joined the Norfolk Co. Militia to fight their former countrymen. Pvt. Al. Disbrow is shown on the rolls of Capt. Wm. McCracken's co., 2nd Norfolk regiment from 19 July until 18 Aug. 1812. We assume this was Almon because his brother Alvin Ira, who was also a member of the 2nd regiment, was carried on the rolls as "Ira" or "Eirey" Disbrow. Almon also served under Capt. William Robinson in the same regiment, from 25 May to 24 July 1814 and again from 25 Oct. until 24 Nov. that year. He later applied for and received a pension for his service. His name appears ("Almond E.") on pensioner lists in the "Waterford [Ont.] Star" newspaper in 1875 and 1876-7, a resident of Simcoe. Bob Mosher, who has researched the Disbrows and other related families of Norfolk Co., found no land or marriage records for Almon Disbrow. In the 1851 census of Townsend Twp., "Almond" Disbrow appears, age 57, a cooper, born in the U.S., Baptist, single, living with the Beemer family. Ten years later he was listed in Middleton Twp., age 65, single, a cook, and with him was Aaron Disbrow, age 24, single, also a cook. (Aaron is unidentified and I have no other record of him.) According to Arlynn Gantz, "Almond Disbrow died on 5 Aug. 1877, along with several others when the Norfolk County farm (home) burned to the ground. He was 80 years old. (This is now on Simcoe's near north side)." A newspaper account of the fire appeared in "The British Canadian", a Simcoe newspaper, of 8 Aug. 1877, p. 3. References: Rowland/Zalmon Disbrow fam. Cayuga Co., NY d. 12 Feb. 1855 New Buffalo, Berrien Co., MI m. MARTHA MASON b. MA d. Records of Andes Disbrow are scarce. The Rowland/Zalmon Disbrow Bible gives his dates of birth and death and states that he died of typhoid fever. The only other record we have found of him is the Laporte Co., IN school censuses of 1847 and 1848, which list his daughter Martha Disbrow in a school located in Twp. 38 N., Range 1. The daughter Martha, who married William Garland, lived in Three Oaks, Berrien Co., MI in 1900. In the census that year she gave her birthplace as New York, her father's as Canada and her mother's as Massachusetts. Her death record in Berrien Co. lists her parents as (blank) Disbrow and Martha Mason, and her obituary called her one of New Buffalo, MI's, "pioneer residents." Although I have no proof I am listing James Disbrow of Berrien Co. as a son of Andes. This James was born in 1831 in "Upper Canada" (Ontario), married in New Buffalo, MI, in 1853, and was somehow related to (3-2-4-5) Zalmon A. Disbrow and his wife (3-2-1-2-6) Ann M. (Disbrow) of Chickaming Twp., Berrien Co. I believe Andes was the best bet for being his father based on what we have found. (3rd) 12 Mar. 1848 Norfolk Co., Ontario CHLOE THOMSON Bob Mosher found no land records involving Nathan B. Disbrow in Norfolk Co. The best public records of him are the 1848 Townsend Twp. assessment and census. The assessment lists him on the north part of Lot 7, Conc. 8, with one male under 16, two males over 16, one female under 16 and three females over 16, one frame house, one horse and one milch cow. The census that year of the Village of Waterford included Nathan Disbrow of Lot 7, Conc. 8, Townsend Twp. His occupation was cooper and there were 8 persons residing in his household. Two persons were not members of the family. Seven were U.S. natives and one a native of Canada. The family broke down into age groups as follows: Two males under 5; no females under 5 One female 5-15 One single male 18-21 One single male 21-30 One married male 40-60 One married female 14-45 One single female 14-45 There was also one female death in the preceding year which was undoubtedly Nathan's second wife Lucretia. Since no comprehensive list of Nathan B. Disbrow's children has been found, and he apparently died intestate, the names of the children have been put together from various sources. Some - in particular Thomas, Elizabeth and Alvin I. - are really just suspected of being children of Nathan at this point and the necessary evidence to prove the connections is lacking. This uncertainty is understandable due to the fact that Nathan died leaving a number of young children, some or all of whom may have been "farmed out" or had to make it on their own. What became of his widow Chloe is unknown. Children, by 1st wife: (prob. all b.
