N1/2 of Lot 3, Conc. 7, Townsend Twp. [10:182] 11 Apr. 1850 - Zalmon A. Disbrow of Townsend to John Morley of Thoro, Welland Co. 200 a. Lot 4, Conc. 11, Walsingham Twp. [10:156] In the 1844 Townsend Twp. assessment Zalmon Desbrow was listed on the N1/2 of Lot 3, Conc. 7. Net worth 69 pounds. 75 acres cultivated, 15 uncultivated. 2 horses, 4 oxen, 2 milch cows and 1 horned cattle. He was shown as living on the same lot in the 1848 assessment with 35 cultivated acres, 65 uncultivated. 2 horses, 2 oxen, 4 milch cows and 2 young cattle. In his household were one male under 16, one male over 16, one female under 16 and one female over 16. A document handed down through the family to Ruth Carr of Lakeside, MI, dated Jan. 1850, signed by neighbors and relatives of Zalmon Disbrow, states that: "His wife not long since left Mr. Disbrow and is now cohabiting with another man. Mr. Disbrow always treated her kindly and she had no cause whatever for leaving him." It bears the following signatures: John Dudbrige, Millison Dudbridge, Austen Slaght, Elisabeth Slaght, Jane H. Winter, Jane Winter, Walter N. Webster, Elizabeth Webster, John W. Pernsy, Daniel Disbrow, Elisebeth Disbrow, Job Massecar, Ester A. Dodge, Jake Morrison, Jacob Glover, Oliver Edmonds, Elisabeth Edmonds. After this Zalmon apparently left Canada for Michigan. In 1849 he had purchased 80 acres in sec. 30 of Chickaming Twp., Berrien Co., MI. Part of this property is now owned by Zalmon's great-granddaughter Ruth (Robinson) Carr on Warren Woods Road. Zalmon married his cousin, Ann M. (Disbrow) Covert, a widow, and they moved to the property in Chickaming Twp. On 1 Nov. 1861 Zalmon enlisted in Co. K, 12th MI Infantry. He gave his age as 44, but actually he was 51. He served as a fifer/musician. On the company muster roll of Feb. through Apr. 1862 is the remark, "Sick in hospital to Cincinnati. False enlistment made by A. P. Collins. Disbrow is over 60 [sic] years old and never done a hours service." Zalmon was present at the battle of Shiloh on 6 & 7 Apr. 1862. The military reports state that he died at Pittsburg Landing, TN, on 15 Apr. 1862 of "debility." The family Bible record and a statement made by the widow in her pension file state that he died 20 Apr. 1862 at St. Louis Gen'l Hospital of unknown disease. These discrepancies are apparently laid to rest by a newspaper item found by Arlynn Gantz in the "Niles [MI] Republican" of 26 Apr. 1862: "Extract from a Private Letter, 'St. Louis, Apr. 19, ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 241 (3-2-4-5) ZALMON ALVA-6 DISBROW, cont'd I have this moment made a summary of the wounded and lost of the Michigan troops on board the steamer Imperial, just arrived ... B. to Seneca Co., N.Y. and left him with his brother Thomas. Wm. B. when he grew up to manhood went to his Uncle Rowland in Canada where his father had left his sister Manerva and made them a visit. Later on he returned to Canada and stayed about two years and on his return brought with him his sister whom he looked after until her marriage." A biographical sketch of William B. Disbro's son, Ernest L. Disbro, in the 1894 "Commemorative Bio. Record of Huron & Lorain Cos., OH": "... 3rd son of Rev. William B. Disbro, a native of France [sic - obviously an error]. When a boy the father came to this country, making his first home in the New World at Marietta, Ohio. He was educated in Cleveland, and graduated from the Homeopathic College, after which he practiced his profession for several years in that city. In 1843 he entered the ministry of the M. E. church, was appointed presiding elder in the Sandusky district, and afterward was transferred to the Cleveland district, where he officiated in the same capacity, his residence during the latter time being in Elyria, Lorain Co. He died in 1865; his widow now resides in Atlanta, GA." The sketch also mentions that Wm. B. Disbro was at one time an auditor at Baldwin University, Berea, OH. In 1850 we find him listed as "James" Disbrow in the census of Brooklyn Twp., Cuyahoga Co., OH, age 35, a Methodist Preacher. Also in his household were Eugenia 7, Edward 5, Mary J. 2 and Mary C.
