David Disbrow of Westport, Conn. married Sunday in NYC by Rev. Wm. Adams to Miss Catharine Hull of NYC." He was probably the David Disbro listed in the 1840 census of Stratford, Fairfield Co., CT, with one male and one female, both between 20 and 29 years of age. By occupation he was engaged in "Navigation of the Ocean." Nearby was listed his father Joseph and family. In 1850 Catherine Disbrow was listed in the 5th Ward of New York City, age 32, b. NY. With her were Catherine R. 10 (b. CT), David E. 7 (b. NY), Charles H. 2 (b. RI), and Rebecca Hull 30 (b. NY), possibly Catherine's sister. C, 28th Connecticut Infantry to serve in the Civil War. He was treated for "debility" in hospital at Baton Rouge, LA from 25 May until 24 June 1863, then returned to duty. He was mustered out as a private 28 Aug. 1863. He died of consumption at Easton, at the age of 28. His widow, Caroline Kidney, filed for a widow's pension for Joseph's service 29 Jan. 1902, age 74, a resident of East Norwalk, CT. She stated Joseph Disbrow died of disability as a result of his service. She stated she had been married previously to Aaron Rowe, and had married Joseph Disbrow under the name of Caroline Harvey Rowe (Harvey crossed out). Later she married Peter J. Kidney. Another application for pension was dated 3 Apr. 1911. She was then 86 and still living at East Norwalk. A letter from the Pension Bureau advised her that she wasn't entitled to a pension, but that her previous claim was still open because her attorney hadn't submited necessary evidence. Her file was abandoned in 1914, apparently because she had not followed up on it. No known children. References: fam. data of Dr. Eric C. About 1817 or '18 his parents moved from New York state to the farm of William Henry Harrison (the future president) at North Bend, OH, a small place on the Ohio River west of Cincinnati. Isaac and his family followed them a few years later, after 1820 when he was living in Wayne, Steuben Co., NY. During his eight years at North Bend he engaged in the manufacture of whiskey barrels for the Harrison distillery. After 1830 he moved his family to Johnson Co., Indiana, where he took up farming. No land purchases are on record until 15 Aug. 1836 when he bought 40 acres in Union Twp., the s.e. 1/4 of the s.e. 1/4 of section 31. On 8 Sep. 1840 Elizabeth Disbrow bought forty acres in Hensley Twp., described as the s.w. 1/4 of the n.w. 1/4 of sec. 9. Isaac followed this up with a purchase of 46 acres, the s.e. 1/4 of the n.w. 1/4 of sec. 4, Hensley Twp., on 18 Aug. 1848. This last parcel was sold after Isaac's death by his sons Zalmon and Isaac Jr. Isaac's great-great grandson, the late Eddis Johnson, who in 1983 published a book on the descendants of Thomas Disbrow Sr. of Compo, CT, researched this family and the land records pertaining to them. He wrote: "All attempts to find the burial place of Isaac Disbrow and his wife Elizabeth (Burritt) Disbrow have been futile. Undoubtedly they were buried in one of the several burial places in Hensley or possibly Union Township." Children: (3-2-1-1-1) Amanda b. 12 Jan. 1810 NY; m. Jacob and Anna (Jolley) were probably married about 1808 in Seneca Co., NY. He is listed in the 1810 census of the town of Fayette with one male 16-25, one female under 10 and one female 16-25. After 1813 the family moved to the town of Wayne, Steuben Co., NY, and settled near Jacob's brother Isaac. Both families were listed there in the 1820 census. Anna died 8 Feb. of that year and sometime after that Jacob moved to Allegany Co., where he was living in the town of Grove in 1830. On 18 Aug. 1836 Jacob C. Disbrow entered forty acres of land in sec. 32 of Union Twp., Johnson Co., IN. Three days earlier his brother Isaac had purchased forty acres in an adjacent section. Whether or not Jacob settled for any time in Indiana we do not know. Apparently he went to Canada for a few years, probably living near his relatives, uncle (3-2-4) Rowland Disbrow and his sons, in Norfolk Co., Ontario. In 1839 Jacob's son William Nathan (usually just called Nathan) moved to Williams Co., Ohio, and settled in Florence Twp. On 25 Mar. 1845 Nathan and his wife Mary sold twenty acres described as the n.e. part of the n.w. quarter of sec. 10, Superior Twp., Williams Co., to Jacob Disbrow of Superior Twp. for $100. In his will, dated 26 Mar. 1845, Jacob Disbrow of Williams Co., Ohio, bequeathed to "my beloved wife Anna Disbrow in line of her dower the plantation on wich we now Reside Situate in superior township Williams County Ohio Containing twenty acres during Her natural Life and all the Live stock Horses Cowes Sheap Hogs &c Also all the House hold furniture and other itemes not Particularly named and otherwise disposed of in this Will ..." Property to go to his heirs (not named) after the death of his wife Anna. Anna Disbrow and William Crysey [?] named executors. Anna signed a statement dated 18 Oct. 1845 which stated she was "satisfied with the provisions of the annexed will of my late husband Jacob Disbrow." Ruth Klump, a descendant of Jacob, who located the above will, researched land records in Williams Co. and found the following concerning Jacob's twenty acres in Superior Twp.: 20 Apr. 1848 - "Solomon and Lucinda Robinson for twenty dollars paid by James Russell and Anna Disbrow quit claim to their part of twenty acres ..." All of the above, from Ann Disbrow, quit claim their parts of the twenty acres to Thomas Mathews of Florence, Williams Co., Ohio. 29 May 1871 - "Thomas B. and Charlott Mathews ... sold for $360 to William H. Russell of Williams Co. 12 acres ..." Another of Jacob's descendants, Ruth Carr, furnished us with copies of a family record from an old Bible kept by her great-grandmother (3-2-1-2-6) Ann M. (Disbrow) (Covert) (Disbrow) McGee, which is now in the possession of Mrs. Carr's niece, Nadra Kissman. It lists the names and dates of birth of Jacob's six children and also gives the death date of his first wife Anna (Jolley). He engaged in farming at that place until at least 1841, after which he moved his family to Monroe Co., IL. There his wife Martha died in Feb. 1848 and probably some of their children died there as well. In 1850 Jesse moved on again, this time settling in Muscatine Co., IA, where he was listed in the city of Muscatine in the census that year: Jesse Desbro, age 55, a laborer, b. NY, with his children, Elizabeth 27, Rebecca 21, Samuel 19, Mary 17, Julia 8. His daughter Carolyn, wife of H. P. Finson, was listed in a nearby household. Back in Monroe Co., IL that year was listed a J. C. Dizbro, age 33, and his family, whom I believe to have been a son of Jesse and Martha. In 1860 we find Jesse Desbrow, age 64, a farmer, and his son Samuel S. listed in Goshen Twp., along with daughter Rebecca Tice, her husband Benjamin Tice and their family. It is not known how many children Jesse and Martha had. The unnamed children listed below are based on census enumerations which are rather unreliable for evidence. Thomas's son, Zelotes P. Disbro, wrote in 1898 that his father had accompanied his grandfather, Thomas Disbrow Sr., on their move from NY state to the farm of William H. Harrison at North Bend, OH, about 1817. The information I have shows that Thomas Jr.'s first two children were born in NY in 1818 and 1820, so perhaps Thomas Jr. and his family followed his parents to OH a few years after their removal. It appears they only stayed in North Bend a few years, and by 1824 they were back in NY, living in Steuben Co. The 1830 census lists them in the town of Pratsburg. In 1832, again according to Zelotes P. Disbro, the family moved back to OH, but this time they went to the northern part of the state, settling in Huron Co. (Ruggles Twp., which became part of Ashland Co. in 1846.) Thomas died in 1850 before the census was taken in Ruggles Twp. "Betsey" Disbrow was listed there, age 55, with four of her children, John 22 (a farmer), Clark 20, Sarah J. 18 and Thomas 13. Elizabeth Jayne, sometimes spelled "Jaynes", according to Ruth Aingworth, was a descendant of William De Jeanne, a native of Bristol, England, who had served as a Chaplain in Cromwell's army, and who changed his name to Jayne and came to Connecticut in 1670. Her father, Timothy Jayne, was b. 1765 in Orange Co., NY, and d. 1826 at Milo, Yates Co., NY. Elizabeth's birth date is shown on her gravestone as 2 Dec. 1795, but a family record perhaps made by Zelotes P. Disbro gives it as 3 Nov. 1794. In 1860 she was living with her dau.
