(26 Mar. 1801) Warwick, Orange Co., NY d. 19 Jan. 1874 Dix, Schuyler Co., NY (age 72-9-24) bur. Millport cem., Chemung Co., NY m. THEODOCIA BEARDSLEY, dau. of Ichabod & Sarah (Galpin) b. 26 Aug. 1799 prob. Fairfield Co., CT d. 27 Oct. 1864 Dix, Schuyler Co., NY bur. w/Nathan, Millport cem. When Nathan was 14 years old, he moved with his parents from Orange Co., NY, to a farm near Millport which at that time was in Tioga Co., NY. His father Reuben homesteaded land now located in the southeast corner of the town of Dix, Schuyler Co. At that time the area was known as Catherine, later Catlin, and it came within the boundaries of Chemung Co. from 1836 until Schuyler Co. was formed in 1854. The land where they settled was part of a large tract owned by Charles Carroll of Carrollton, MD, who was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Reuben never legally purchased the property, or at least there is no record of it. But a deed in the Chemung Co. courthouse in Elmira, dated 14 Nov. 1832, shows Nathan O. Disbrow of Catlin purchased 57 3/4 acres from Carroll, which was 1/2 of Lot 129. Interestingly the date of the deed is the same day Charles Carroll died. Nathan purchased the other 1/2 of the lot in 1852 giving him a total of about 115 acres, plus another 32 acre lot nearby. This farm is where Nathan lived his entire life. He married Theodocia Beardsley in the early 1820's. She was from Tompkins Co. Her father, Ichabod Beardsley, had served in the Connecticut Militia during the Revolution, enlisting in 1781 at the age of 14. After the war he lived in Stratford, with the exception of two years in Litchfield Co., CT, and in 1806 he moved with his family to Lansing, Tompkins Co., NY, where he farmed until his death in 1849. In the state census of 1825 Nathan was listed next to his father. In his household were one male (qualifed to vote and subject to military duty), 3 females (one married under 45, two unmarried under 16), 1 female birth in preceding year. In the barn were 2 "neat" cattle, 2 sheep and 2 hogs. He worked hard and built up his farm so that by 1850 his livestock included 3 horses, 5 "milch" cows, a team of oxen, 12 other cattle, 18 sheep and 17 swine. He had also produced 170 bushels of wheat, 50 bushels of Indian corn, 125 bushels of field corn, 4 lbs. of tobacco, 50 lbs. of wool, 10 bushels of peas and beans, 100 bushels of Irish potatoes, 15 bushels of barley, 95 bushels of buckwheat, 400 lbs. of butter, 40 tons of hay and 2 bushels of other grass seeds within the past year. His total acreage was 147, with 90 improved. We know that Nathan also had a sawmill on his farm and a rather large apple orchard. In his will, dated 5 Jan. 1865, proved 1 May 1874, Nathan devised his property to his children, Rosella Wilcox, Adeline Carman, Eliza Jane Platman, Mary A. Dodge, Isabel Davenport ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 220 (2-10-1-1) NATHAN OLMSTEAD-6 DISBROW, cont'd and Beardsley Disbrow. His friend Minor T. Brodrick was named as executor. His son Albert J. and daughter Catherine M. were not named in the will. Nathan's and Theodocia's oldest son, Daniel Wesley, had joined the army during the Mexican War and had died during that conflict. Apparently neither of their other sons was interested in taking over the farm after Nathan died, so the daughter Mary Ann and her second husband Jason Smart bought the farm from Nathan's estate. It was sold out of the family in 1895. When my uncle, Alan Stacy Disbrow, and I visited the farm in 1987 there was nothing left of the old home or buildings. The present owner, Gerald Purvis, has a dairy farm on the property. He remembered some of the old buildings, which sat about 1/4 mile from the road, burning down quite a few years ago. He also remembered there being some of the orchard left, but the area is all under cultivation now. He showed us the deeds in his possession which gave the history of the ownership of the property from Nathan O. Disbrow to himself. Nathan's death notice, which appeared in the "Watkkns [NY] Express", 22 Jan. 1874, simply read: "Nathan Disbrow, an old resident of the upper part of the Town of Dix, died of Appoplexy on Monday, the 19th inst., aged 72 years."
