From Elizabeth's obituary: "MRS. ELIZABETH BEVERIDGE (Sandwich Journal). After suffering a lingering illness of nearly a year Mrs. Elizabeth Beveridge passed last Sunday afternoon to the City of Rest, having lived to the advanced age of seventy-nine years, one month and twenty-two days. "Elizabeth Disbrow was born in Fairfield, Conn., August 26, 1826. She came west to Freeland, DeKalb county, Ill., when a young lady, to reside with her sister, Mrs. Charles Merritt. It was here that she was wedded to James H. Beveridge December 24, 1849 ... Many years ago Mrs. Beveridge became a member of the Presbyterian church of Sandwich, and she has been a most faithful and consistent member. "There is left to mourn her departure besides many relatives and friends, a son, Hoy, residing at the home farm, and a daughter, Mrs. Rachael Thompson, now of DeKalb." There is a portrait of her and one of her husband in "The Somonauk Book", a history of Somonauk United Presbyterian Church near Sandwich, IL, which also gives a biographical sketch of James Hoy Beveridge. It contains the following information: He came to Somonauk in 1841, took a claim adjoining his father's; owned a store at Freeland Corners w/bro.-in-law, 1848; in 1849 elected associate justice of county; in 1852 was elected assessor; was one of the "leading spirits" in calling the Anti-Kansas-Nebraska Bill Convention in Sycamore in 1854; in 1856 a delegate to the first Republican state convention at Bloomington; in 1852 elected circuit clerk of the county, re-elected 1856. Resided at the county seat [Sycamore] during that time; in 1864 elected state treasurer and removed to Springfield the following spring; appointed to State House Commission in 1867 and was their secretary, serving until 1878 when construction of the State House was completed; secretary of the Lincoln Memorial Association of IL, which built the Lincoln Memorial. Returned to his farm in Somonauk in 1879, where he bred and raised Jersey cattle. He died at his farm home in 1896. I have received two versions of a paper entitled "Sketch of the Disbrow Family from the earliest known families in America", author unknown, concerning the descendants of Orville and Fanny Disbrow. It contains the following information on this family: "Orville Disbrow, our ancestor ... In May 1838 they moved to Lorain Co., Ohio, where their children were born and they resided for 15 years, moving then to Hardin Co. where they stayed about a year, then moved to Van Wert Co. In 1859 they went to Fulton Co. and settled on the farm near Denson, Ohio, four miles east of Morenci, Mich., which is owned and occupied by a grandson, Orville Disbrow. Orville Disbrow [1st] was a farmer and carpenter, building many of the older farm buildings in that locality." The same data, almost word-for-word, appears in "The History & Genealogy of the Patchin-Patchen Family", published in 1952, and it was contributed to the authors of that book by Mrs. Nellie Blevington, daughter of Dorothy Adeline (Disbrow) Gleason. Fanny M. (Buck) Disbrow was a granddaughter of Abner Buck who served as a drummer in a CT battalion during the Revolution. Her father, Noah Buck, moved with his family to Harpersfield, NY about 1790-92. Fanny lived to be 95 years old and the following is her obituary: "FANNY M. BUCK, daughter of Noah and Jerusha Buck, was born at Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY, 19 Feb. 1814 and died 23 Feb. 1909, being 95 years and four days of age. She was the second daughter of a family of 11 children, five sons and six daughters, two of whom are still living. She was married to Orville Disbrow 1 Jan. 1838, and moved to Loraine Co., OH, in May of the same year, living there 15 years. During this time she united with the Baptist church and was an active member until she moved to Harden Co., where they remained one year, moving then to Van Wert Co., where she joined the Methodist church and has always remained of this faith. They then moved to Fulton Co. in Dec. 1859, where she has ever since resided. "She was the mother of six children, two daughters and four sons, two of whom have preceded her to the other shore, Mrs. Adaline Gleason and Andrew Disbrow. Those living are Mrs. Anthony Leonard, Wauseon; Caleb E. Disbrow, Royalton; David J. Disbrow, Wauseon; and her son Francis E., whom she has always lived with since the death of her husband in Oct. 1875. She also leaves 18 grand-children and 31 great-grand-children. She was an affectionate mother and a kind neighbor. "'Grandma' Disbrow was loved by all that knew her and many can remember the kind services she has rendered in sickness and trouble. She was ever ready to lend a helping hand through her life wherever she was needed. Her many years were filled with industry, ever busy with her needle, after active exercise was impossible for her, but she was happy and contented to the end and one can well say, 'her's was a long life well lived."' Disbrow's obituary, "a man of strong convictions and a stern sense of duty. He was an unyielding abolitionist in Ohio and when he came to Cass Co. [Iowa] he was active in the operation of the 'Underground Railroad"' The early married years of Perry and Clarissa were spent in Lorain Co., OH, where all the children but their last were born. Their son, Hiram A. Disbrow, wrote about their move to IA in his "Personal Reminiscences" for the 1884 Cass Co., IA history: "... I was 13 years old when my father sold his farm and moved his family to Cass Co., Iowa. The breaking up of the old home in Ohio was a sore trial, but a mother's love for her children wanted to see them own land and be settled in business close to her. So her counsel prevailed and in April, 1857, two covered wagons loaded with household goods attracted the attention of a large neighborhood. My father and mother had grown from early childhood with their neighbors to mature man and womanhood, and it was the breaking up of a large family bound together by strong ties of friendship, when our wagons slowly and heavily moved away. We went to Cleveland and loaded on the cars for Chicago. From the latter place we moved on with the teams and wagons. ... We arrived in Lewis [IA] about eleven o'clock a.m., the 19th of May 1857.... Upon our arrival in Lewis the only place of shelter for us was an old log cabin situated on the east bank of the Nishnabotana river, on the road to Council Bluffs, but west of Lewis.... During the summer, by the assistance of a friend, Mr. T. B. Johnson, father pre-empted one hundred and sixty acres in sections 8 and 17, township 76, range 36, being situated immediately south of Atlantic. In the spring of 1862 father built a cabin on his land and moved his family into it and commenced to open up a farm...." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 283 (5-8-1-2) OLIVER FERRY" DISBROW, cont'd Clarissa was a sister of Orilla Langdon who married Perry's brother Samuel. When he came here he found two shops of this kind in operation, ... Mr. Disbrow located at first in the west end of the town, where he remained eight years, then moving to the east end, but in May 1881 he again removed to the west end, removing the blacksmith and wagon shop adjoining.
