(5-6) JUSTUS-4 DISBROW - The following is from "The Resseguie Family" by John E. Morris (Hartford 1888), a footnote on p. 41. [Submitted by G. Reed Howard]: "JUSTUS DISBROW was a soldier of the Revolutionary War. While absent from his home, engaged in the defense of his country, his wife, who was left with eight children to provide for, heard that 'the Tories were coming,' and carried her beds, clothing, and provisions and hid them in the swamp, but they were discovered and burned together with the house and all it contained. The affrighted mother and children sought refuge behind a stone hog pen, which was battered by the bullets of the enemy, who, on discovering the hidden family, tore the clothing off the children's backs and cast it into the fire." ______________________________ (5-7) ASA-4 DISBROW - Information submitted by Alice (Mrs. Howard S.) Morgan, 50 Sunset Hill, Bethel, CT 06801 to Susann Davis, contains the following data on Asa and Charity (Platt) Disbrow and their family: "Notes from Wilfred Platt, who lived on Route #37, north of New Fairfield, Conn. in August 1930 - Uncle Lewis & I, Alice Disbrow Morgan, had called on him looking for information about the Disbrows, and he really had it, as the following record shows. "Asa Disbrow, son of Caleb, m. Charity Platt. Children: 1. Lodemia b. Mar 26, 1778 2. Betsey b. Nov 28, 1779 3. Jesse b. Apr 6, 1781 4. Platt b. Oct 8, 1782 5. Davis b. Oct. 8, 1782. Twins 6. Levi b. Mar 8, 1785 7. Lucy b. July 20, 1788 8. Rhoda b. Feb 8, 1792 - married William Pepper" This record goes on to list a line of descendants from the son Platt Disbrow (see 5-7-5 below). I would make these comments about the above list of children: The fact that exact dates of birth are given might indicate the list was taken from a family Bible or other similar record. The names of the first two known children, Samuel Platt and Olive, are not included in the above list, however five others are included that we did not previously know about - Lodemia, Davis, Levi, Lucy and Rhoda. This Davis may have been (5-9-1) Banks Davis (see below), whom I had placed as a son of (5-9) Levi. The above son Levi, born 8 Mar. 1785, looks as though he may be the same as the one born c1786, whom I have listed in the "Unplaced" section of this book (see U-11). According to Mrs. Morgan, land records for the Sherman, CT area indicate that Asa, Platt, Banks Davis and Levi Disbrow all bought land either adjoining or in very close proximity to each other between 1804 and 1806. These records further reveal that Asa was a carpenter or cooper, Banks Davis was a blacksmith and mill operator, Jesse and Platt were orcharders. ______________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 322 (5-6-2) FREELOVE-5 DISBROW - The following information, from "The Resseguie Family" by John E. Morris, pp. 41-3, amends the data previously given in the text of this book.: "Samuel Resseguie, born in Ridgefield [CT], March 12, 1776, died in South Gibson, Pa., Sept. 12, 1858. He married in Westport, Conn., Nov. 2, 1797, Freelove Disbrow, daughter of Justus and Elizabeth (Sherwood) Disbrow of that place. She died in South Gibson, April 28, 1830, aged 49 years. He married (2d) in Clifford, Pa., June 22, 1831, Nabby Pickering Miller, widow of David Miller and daughter of Jotham and Elsie (Pickering) Pickering of Clifford. She was born May 4, 1786, and died in Lenox, Pa., March 27, 1867. "... resided in several different places in the vicinity of Fishkill, N. Y., until about 1806, when he purchased a farm near what is now called Farmers Mills, Putnam County, where he remained until his emigration to Pennsylvania ... His wife, Freelove, is described as possessing a small, lithe figure, energetic, industrious, and in every way a prudent helpmate, manufacturing with her own hands from the raw flax and wool the wherewithal to clothe her family. After the lapse of seventeen years, when the log cabin had been supplanted by the 'framed house,' and the wilderness was fast receding before the approach of civilization, at the dawn of better days, she was summoned to lay down her life work. "In personal appearance Samuel Resseguie was a type of foreign blood, his father being of French and his mother of Irish descent. He possessed perfect health, never being obliged to call a physician until his last sickness. His sanguine temperament, florid complexion, and great obesity rendered him fair, fat, and funny. Physically he bore a striking resemblance to Sir John Falstaff. His corpulence and longevity were transmitted to nearly all his children.... "Children : I. Betsey Elizabeth, b. July 12, 1798; d. Samuel Resseguie was the third child of William & Catharine (Secor) Resseguie, and a descendant of Alexandre de Resseguier, a French Hugenot refugee to London. The above information was submitted by G. Reed Howard, who descends from Samuel & Freelove (Disbrow) Resseguie, as follows: Fitch Patrick-6 RESSEGUIE, b. 13 Feb. 1805 Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY; d. 17 Nov. 1890 S. Children: "1. Willis b. Jul 8, 1807 m. Paulina Jacas, Apr 30, 1826 2. Joseph B. b. Aug 5, 1809 m. Harriet Pepper, Jun 16, 1833 3. Davis b. Feb 20, 1813 m. Mary Warring, Apr 17, 1839 4. Dimon b. He sold his land in 1848 and went to Hillsdale, NY, to live with his son Davis. His son Dimon's family is continued in Mrs. Morgan's record (see below). ______________________________ (5-8-8) REBECCA-5 DISBROW - The following is from Joan E. Ford, in a letter to me, dated 8 Dec. 1991: "I finally found a bit of additional information regarding Rebecca Disbrow Ford. She is listed in the 1880 Wood County [OH] census in West Mill Grove, Perry Twp., living with the family of her son-in-law Lewis Whitman and his second wife Sarah. At this time Rebecca's grandson William A. Whitman is 13 (William died five years later.) This is definitely the right Rebecca. She is listed as being 76 years old, born in New York, both parents born in Connecticut. She is listed as 'mother-in-law' and as a 'boarder.' I am now positive that she is indeed buried in Perry Twp., and either her grave is unmarked or somehow was not recorded by the people who compiled the cemetery listings. I think it is highly unlikely that she moved out of the county at age 76 or older." ______________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 324 (5-9-1) BANKS DAVIS-5 DISBROW - It appears possible I may have wrongly placed Banks Davis Disbrow as a son of (5-9) Levi. As noted in the text, this assumption was based on a baptismal record in the Greens Farms church, wherein Levi Disbrow offered "Banks Davies" for baptism on 30 Oct. 1791. All other records of Banks Davis Disbrow show him in close proximity to (5-7) Asa Disbrow, whom I had assumed was his uncle. According to the family data received from Alice Morgan, Asa Disbrow and his wife Charity (Platt) had a son "Davis" born 8 Oct. 1782, a twin brother to Platt Disbrow. This date does match the 1850 census where Banks D. Disbrow gave his age as 67. Mrs. Morgan also notes that land records in Sherman (where Banks Disbrow was a blacksmith and mill operator) show Asa and Banks selling their land there in 1818, after which they both moved to Clinton Co., Ohio. I don't know how to explain the baptismal record unless perhaps it was a totally different person. ______________________________ (3-2-5-1) WILLIAM BRIDGEMAN-6 DISBRO - A copy of his will was submitted by Bonnie (Mrs. Norman) Disbro, from Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Cir. Doc. "D", No. 347. The will appears to be undated, but was probated 12 Oct. 1865, and provided: "1st that three lots ... in the Village of Berea ... to be deeded to my son Edward, he having paid for them. 2nd that the Hubbell Farm be sold ... 3rd that the property be kept together and used for the support and maintenance of my family ... 4th I appoint Merrill W. Baker, my son in law, to be my executor ..." Witnessed by John Wheeler and Adaline Pope. ______________________________ (5-7-5-4) DIMON-6 DISBROW - The following family record comes from Alice Morgan, via Susann Davis: "Dimon Disbrow, son of Platt, m. Jane Anne Hoag, Nov, 7, 1838. Children: 1. Lydia Ann b. Aug 9, 1843, d. Mar 7, 1893, m. George N. Pearce, 1859. He d. Apr 19, [1928?]. No issue. 2. David Hoag b. June 12, 1846 d. Sept. 1, 1847) "grandson George D. Aug. 16, 1873, ae 8 mos., 3 d. (b. Jun. 13, 1873) "Dimon Disbrow bought or built a home in New Fairfield. This is still standing at Candlewood Knolls. Property was first sold by George Pearce, widower of Lydia Ann Disbrow, to a N. Y. camp called 'Camp Arden.' Before [Lake] Candlewood was made there was a pond on the property called 'Pearce's Pond.' When I was a little girl we used to go up there fishing. Uncle George was living there then with his second wife. It was said the pond was so deep no one ever touched bottom. It is now under Lake Candlewood between the Knolls and the Isle." Alice (Disbrow) Morgan is a granddaughter of David Hoag Disbrow, who will be continued in Part II.
