    1. [DISBROW] 1664 Letter, Signed "Thomas Desborow"...
    2. Stephen T. Squires
    3. I found the letter transcribed, below, at the British Library, London (folio #84, ADD.29551) signed by one "Thomas Desborow" on June 7, 1664. It is written in a very neat & careful hand, especially in addressing the outer envelope which was addressed as follows: "For Mr. Holmes, Steward to the Lord Hatton [Sir Christopher Hatton, who also resided at Cornet Castle, Guernsey] From Mr. Desborow" ...and addressed also: "Thease Hon. Mr. Holmes Steward to the Lord Hatton // From Mr. Desborow" Thomas Desborow's letter had affixed a very curious small seal-symbol embossed into the hardened red wax: this symbol looks only very vaguely like three emphatically tall "TREES" (each formed by two very well-defined upright, straight vertical lines). Each "tree" is surmounted at their tops by a much smaller triangle sitting on the tip (pointing up). There is a tiny "c" symbol between each of these trees, just below the triangles. There seem to be very vague lines, or notches, near the bottom of the two front "trees" (could they be rigging?) but these are far too vague to really make anything out of (they perhaps come diagonally off the base of the two front "trees" only, also pointing upwards diagonally). Further, there is a neat horizontal slash from which the "trees" appear to be growing. This seal is altogether too crude to be sure, BUT it does now occur to me that the "trees" could be over-sized, exaggerated masts (highly stylized, PERHAPS)! If so, then the ! bottom under-line, which is hardly more than a slash, could be also as a "stylized" ship's line, as only a child might attempt to draw of a proper ship's hull. Such an interpretation DOES suggest an alternative possible identity for the writer, below. Any interpretation of this odd symbol, though, must remain extremely subjective, given how tiny, & therefore truly very difficult it was to make sense of. This symbol is most certainly NOT the famous three bears heads of the familiar Disbrowe family crest, which would have been in long use by this time. Although, THAT particular "rebel" crest, perhaps, was not the sort of "calling card" any Disbrow in 1664 might wish to use, especially upon a supplicating letter of need to a probably "royalist" patron such as Sir Christopher Hatton & his Steward Holmes in 1664... Worthy Sir, You know you promised before you went out of Town with my Lord, that I would receive fifty pounds in six months, if possible, part of the moneys due to my Mother upon bond:--- [illegible word; perhaps "And" or "As," but it's very heavily inked-up!] also that I should not faile of six pounds interest = money, due upon the said bond, the which becomes due this month; and if the said fifty pounds or part thereof now be paid with the said Interest - money, it will be the greatest of courtesies to me, for that my Trade is decayed, and my Indigency so great, that if this money be not speedily paid me, it will unavoidably be my ruine; I pray, sir, be my Advocate, and you shall have the prayers of the widow and the fatherless, consider my condition and let me intreat an Answer assoon [one word] as you can, whether I shall come to you ["my Lord" is crossed out with thick line] to receive it, or receive it in London; And to make an Ingenuous return of all your civilities, it shall be the Endeavor of him who is, your very Humble Servant Thomas Desborow ["o" is crossed out in "Thomas," but perhaps just a line-flourish to again top-off the "T" in his fancy manner of signature] [up & down left margin of this letter, the writer wrote the following: "When you Send, your letter must be directed to Bear Binder lane near Lumbard=Street, at the sign of ye Cradle." ALL case is as seen in original. FINISH] This letter is in volume II of the Christopher Hatton correspondence: "Hatton - Finch, 1663- 1668." The above letter can be seen embedded in a run of letters addressed to George Holmes at "Cornet Castell, Guernsey." All of which, upon further enterprising research, might very well suggest an identity for this "Thomas Desborow," above. Despite the curious seal-symbol seeming so alternatively "provocative" (even while only vaguely suggesting a SHIP), ...the Thomas Disbrow(e) of our present interest was a son of the Eltisley Disbowes, bp 1625 there, and married Susan MASON at St. Peter's Church, Cambridge 17 May 1651. Recall that older brother Samuel Disbrowe was directly related to the Masons already at CT Colony also, Captain John MASON there too, my own Mason line. This was via his becoming the brother-in-law to Rev. James Fitch of CT, both married within two years 1646/48 in the now famous "Whitfield House" parlor (see website for this museum at: http://www.hbgr! aphics.com/whitfieldmuseum/ ....BTW, Samuel is known to have built an identical stone 'manse' nearby in Guilford, CT). Fitch certainly did marry a "Mason" as his second wife, as did Fitch's own son as well. Both of these MASON/Fitch wives were daughters to the also very prominent Capt./Major John Mason of early CT history ("infamous" due to Pequot War, sadly now somewhat mis-interpreted via non-scholarly "presentism," & also for casino "pc" purposes now, ...yes, that certainly does happen!). The Fitch/Mason family often would inter-marry over succeeding generations (in fact, a cemetery in my own home-town here has late 19th c. stone for local Fitch with a Mason tombstone immediately next to it!!...I went to grammar school with Hank Mason, never knowing we were apparently long-lost cousins!). Captain Mason certainly did have important, even very prominent ties back in England just like Samuel Disbrowe: specifically to Sir Thomas Fairfax, the general commanding the Parli! amentary Army at outbreak of Civil War, (and Cromwell's commander then!) who invited Captain Mason back to an important role in his command. As in the above letter, our Eltisley Thomas was also a "fatherless" child (his father, James died in 1638; BTW Eltisley is pronounced ELL-tisley,...just as I was so corrected by the locals). Further, I believe it is certainly very possible that his own mother was still living in 1664, all of which is indicated in the above letter. The Eltisley Thomas could have easily been in dire financial straits at this time as well, ...with his "trade decayed" perhaps, especially as this is soon after the Restoration (of 1660) which certainly caused very dire chaos for his much older and far more famous two brothers: Samuel, & especially John (exiled in Holland at this time!). So saying however as to our Eltisley Thomas, I also do recall a very brief, too brief, very late 17th c. reference (1696?) at the British Library to a sea-captain who was also named "Thomas Desborow" (or variant spelling like "Desborough") but I must now pursue this much further there (inexplicably then, I could not/did not copy this reference to my regret ever since! You never know what you'll do when tired..ready to pack-it-in for the day! For some reason, I also did NOT think it was any big deal then! OK, call me stupid!). Now please recall, Mike Disbrow's own reference (v. I, p. 57, "Thomas Disbrow Descendants") to a "Capt. Thomas Desborough, Master of NY, of the Brigantine 'Mary' which Ben Franklin's "Pennsylvania Gazette" (4 March 1746) reported was captured at sea by a French Privateer (BTW, I bought a beautiful ship model of just exactly such an 18th c. French ship at "Nauticalia" in Windsor, &--believe it-- for a surprisingly inexpensive cost, doing so wit! h this incident in mind---ship model named for the Courer!). This 1764 reference is undoubtedly too late for that much earlier 1696(?) far too brief "flash-by" I saw in London, but I now must pursue this most provocative angle much further, of course, for the possibility at least of generational connection perhaps. Could it be that our own Thomas Disbrow(e) (who most certainly could ONLY have been the Eltisley "Thomas" even now as given much NEW "relational analysis" further confirming this,...together with so much already reported here!!)...could it be that HE too was a sea-captain, or perhaps his son Thomas of Compo and Westchester Co.?? Let's think boldly for a moment, recalling that especially the Eltisley Disbrowe's were well-connected to all those fascinating financial adventurers making colonial settlement possible and necessary, via se-borne trade . Consider those trading enterprises (the above letter also refers to the "decayed Trade" of Thomas, perhaps not as ambiguously as we may think!), such as William Pennoyer, Matthew Cradock, Maurice Thompson, ...with famous early involvement of them also with one privateering Captain Jackson of the Providence Island raids onto Spanish shipping in 1640' to '50's. Could our own Thomas, or his son Thomas later (wild speculation here gang!!) have been a sea-faring rogue like that maybe not so mysterious "Captain Cromwell," who suddenly visited Plimouth Colony and who was himself also involved with ALL these characters of ours. And, as I now believe for reasons I must confirm, related perhaps also to our famous Cromwell family relations. Well, I just don't know! about our Thomas you see!! 'Wild' speculation won't do it for us!....Could the many sea-captains working VERY closely with Pennoyers and Maurice Thompson & Cradock too (besides important merchant-backer of MA Bay Colony, Mathew Cradock was also a large-scale ship-builder at Medford, MA, immediately near Salem in 1630's and employed Robert Pennoyer and may well have even employed perhaps our own Isaac Disbrowe on his multi-year jaunt to America before returning to Eltisley!! Well, I intended to go on & on about historical "relational analysis" in this missive and not about sailor boys, even about some curious "name magic." I hoped to discuss such as "Mary Pendaloe" who accompanies one "Thomas Desborow" (same spelling as the above letter) on the our ship "Crown Malligoe" in 1677(--see Mike's p. 21, v.I; ...this is none other than our very own Thomas & considering that quite so many other surnames--including my "Squire"-- are all aboard with him while then turning up also in Fairfield village!!). Well, that "Pendaloe" name is certainly startling now isn't it, since the far too similar surnamed "Thomas Pentlow" turns up in the 1623 will of Eltisley's own Jeffrey Disbrow and himself very closely related to Thomas Disbrowe's own father, James, who died in 1638 mentioning Jeffrey Disbrowe in his will. Oh well, enough already! So please enjoy....STSquires

    1. [DISBROW] Disbrow ancestry
    2. The following quote is from JOHN DISBROWE MAJOR GENERAL OF THE WEST by H. B. Disbrowe, 1971. chapter 2 URL is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/5853/Disbrowe/ch_02.html. He was born in 1608 and thus, when the struggle began, was thirty-four years old. He lived in the old Rectory at Eltisley which, with a substantial estate, he inherited from his father James Disbrowe. His mother was, before her marriage, Elizabeth Hatley of Over in the same county. The Disbrowe [1] family was of ancient origin and known to be descended from one John Disbrow of Hargrave in Northamptonshire, brother of Lord Disbrowe of Desborough. Notes for Chapter Two: [1] - Disbrowe, p. 9. In most accounts the name is incorrectly given as Desborough or Desboro. This is a type of error with which present day members of the family are familiar. The subject of this biography always signed documents and correspondence with the signature, John Disbrowe. This reference is given as : Disbrowe..........Records of Stirring Times 1726 - 1822 (William Heinemann 1908) --------- Now for my question. Has anyone seen this book or have it ? Of particular interest is what it specifically says about John Disbrow of Hargrave in Northamptonshire. Carl Dunn

    2. Michael Disbrow
    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner Subject - good discussion Particularly to Carl Dunn, Stephen Squires, Brian Disbury: I hope that you fellows will continue your discussion pertaining to early Disbrow wills, etc. here on the Disbrow mailing list. I have nothing relevant to add at this point, but if I do I'll jump in. It's all very interesting. To all: It's great to see some activity going on in this list after several months of almost nothing. I am as much to blame as anybody for that, but in the past I haven't usually had much luck in trying to get anything going, so in my discouragement I simply give up. I just finished counting and find there are now 125 subscribers to this Disbrow list, although I just had to delete a few non-working addresses. That's a lot of people out there who are waiting (for who-knows-what reason) to post their information. This list won't do you much good, folks, if you don't use it. If you're not sure how to post a message, it's this easy: write down what you know about your Disbrow connections, what you'd like to know, or anything else you'd like to share with the group, and send it to: DISBROW-L@rootsweb.com. All those other 124 people will get your message, and you just might find a relative who has the information you need. You never know till you try. (By the way, you cannot send attachments through this list.) For anyone here who has written to me this past summer and not gotten a reply, I apologize. Please try again and I'll do my best to answer each and every email. It's been a crazy summer. Mike Disbrow

    3. Carl Dunn wrote: > Stephen, > Thank you. Do you plan to publish the abstracts of the > wills and other materials on the mailing list ? > Carl I have not, for many months now, looked at my VERY smudgy copies of the very few Disbrowe wills I had time to retrieve on my trip to Cambridge last December. My copies are very poor ones, difficult to de-cipher, though I will be happy to list these by name/date, at least, within the next few days. I already intended to also list, as possible for length, the complete index of all available Disbrowe wills now on file at the Shire Hall, from their index books which I copied appropriate pages from last year. But I must dig all this out (not to worry, all is in proper/safe place, of course!), & get the job done for you and we know what effort that is in the end via these machines.... Please appreciate I'm consumed with historical (non-Disbrowe gen) reading/research angles right now, educating myself (about some truly amazing stuff actually!), but having little to do with this wills business. I should have known the reaction to my "little" Disbrow-L posting just now! Nevertheless, this "wills de-cipherment" issue is certainly a major priority for us all, and also very necessary to my book project in the end. RE that: I do have many new, marvelous angles am uncovering in my far more broadly reaching historical research on Mercy Disbrow(e)'s CT witch trial ...BUT please don't rush the maturing of such good wine---it will be published in book form eventually (hopefully, much sooner than later now!), MEANWHILE, I will attempt to post the above promised material for you all, ASAP. ALSO, I intend to post a transcript on this List of that 1665 letter I handled (most gratifyingly) at the British Library in London last year. This letter was signed by one "Thomas Desborow" who, from internal evidence, in fact could very well have been our own Thomas the migrant to New England as we shall discuss and, as I also believe, Thomas of Eltisley, bp 1625 there too...PLEASE be patient, ...this too shall come and well before my next trip this November! OK? STSquires

    3. Reference Carl Dunn and Stephen T Squires' comments I add my reply to Carl. I have a schedule of the Wills in Cambridgeshire which I collected during my 1999 visit to Cambridge. The older ones, referred to in the original Question are as follows:- Disabrow/Disbrowe -- John,West Wickam Ref VC 8: 168 1530 CW '' '' --John, Stetchworth "' VC 8: 1__ 1528 Last numbers not readale ( but findable) Disborough -- Lawrence, Burrough Green VC 15:31 !566 CW Dyssheborne, -- William , Chesterton VC 4:136 ( 1499?) Dishbourne -- Thomas, Waterbeach VC 8:120 1527 There are lots more including Robert of Horningsea in 1557 and John of Cottenham in 1557. They can all be obtained via the Cambridge Records Office and I know of a Local Reputable Genealogist there(Not in the records office but a Member of the CFHS) who can photo copy the Wills and has very resonable charges for translating them into"Readable English." She has done a lot of work for me on other wills. If I can help in any way by ordering the wills and getting them transcribed please let me know.If you just want to contact the Records Office the email is County.records.Cambridge@camcnty.gov.uk Gill Shapland is the person to contact. Sorry Carl, I had no need to transcribe these particular Wills.Brian.

    3. There is an actual "treasure-house" of virtually unexplored material, including dozens of 16th-17thc. Disbrow wills, all pertaining to our early Disbrows of Cambridgeshire at the Shire Hall in Cambridge, CAMBS, Eng. I intend to explore this on my return visit to Cambridge for better copies & for a little 'professional' help (at cost) in calligraphy decipherment this November (after my far too brief attempt last year when I retrieved a paltry 4 or 5 of these will copies in very olde calligraphy which I've since had some trouble deciphering). Another invaluable resource is the Cambridgshire Library in downtown Cambrdge which has seemingly "endless" microfilm lists of our Disbrows in their genealogy records for those critical periods of our interest, including for Hatley, Over and Burrough Green Disbrows, etc. I brought home a two inch thick pile of copies of that material which I have far too slowly been trying mightily to work my way through. I believe that there is a book indexing wills of Ely Consistory in this time period and I believe the wills themselves are now in the Kings College Archives of Cambridge University. Does anyone know how abstracts or copies can be obtained ? Analysis of these wills may extend the Disbrowe ancestry back a couple of generations. If you would like a copy, send me a short note and I will attach it to a personal e-mail for you. The form is generic and could be used to start your own database or to submit info to me in reference to the "Disbrowe" connection. At this time I am attempting to put the Family Tree of John Disbrowe 1526-1574, of Eltisley Cambridgeshire, England, as traced by Harold B. Disbrowe, published in 1986. Into a database that would be available to anyone on request. Lets hope I have better luck with that, than I have had with this data form. (5-6) JUSTUS-4 DISBROW - The following is from "The Resseguie Family" by John E. Morris (Hartford 1888), a footnote on p. 41. [Submitted by G. Reed Howard]: "JUSTUS DISBROW was a soldier of the Revolutionary War. While absent from his home, engaged in the defense of his country, his wife, who was left with eight children to provide for, heard that 'the Tories were coming,' and carried her beds, clothing, and provisions and hid them in the swamp, but they were discovered and burned together with the house and all it contained. The affrighted mother and children sought refuge behind a stone hog pen, which was battered by the bullets of the enemy, who, on discovering the hidden family, tore the clothing off the children's backs and cast it into the fire." ______________________________ (5-7) ASA-4 DISBROW - Information submitted by Alice (Mrs. Howard S.) Morgan, 50 Sunset Hill, Bethel, CT 06801 to Susann Davis, contains the following data on Asa and Charity (Platt) Disbrow and their family: "Notes from Wilfred Platt, who lived on Route #37, north of New Fairfield, Conn. in August 1930 - Uncle Lewis & I, Alice Disbrow Morgan, had called on him looking for information about the Disbrows, and he really had it, as the following record shows. "Asa Disbrow, son of Caleb, m. Charity Platt. Children: 1. Lodemia b. Mar 26, 1778 2. Betsey b. Nov 28, 1779 3. Jesse b. Apr 6, 1781 4. Platt b. Oct 8, 1782 5. Davis b. Oct. 8, 1782. Twins 6. Levi b. Mar 8, 1785 7. Lucy b. July 20, 1788 8. Rhoda b. Feb 8, 1792 - married William Pepper" This record goes on to list a line of descendants from the son Platt Disbrow (see 5-7-5 below). I would make these comments about the above list of children: The fact that exact dates of birth are given might indicate the list was taken from a family Bible or other similar record. The names of the first two known children, Samuel Platt and Olive, are not included in the above list, however five others are included that we did not previously know about - Lodemia, Davis, Levi, Lucy and Rhoda. This Davis may have been (5-9-1) Banks Davis (see below), whom I had placed as a son of (5-9) Levi. The above son Levi, born 8 Mar. 1785, looks as though he may be the same as the one born c1786, whom I have listed in the "Unplaced" section of this book (see U-11). According to Mrs. Morgan, land records for the Sherman, CT area indicate that Asa, Platt, Banks Davis and Levi Disbrow all bought land either adjoining or in very close proximity to each other between 1804 and 1806. These records further reveal that Asa was a carpenter or cooper, Banks Davis was a blacksmith and mill operator, Jesse and Platt were orcharders. ______________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 322 (5-6-2) FREELOVE-5 DISBROW - The following information, from "The Resseguie Family" by John E. Morris, pp. 41-3, amends the data previously given in the text of this book.: "Samuel Resseguie, born in Ridgefield [CT], March 12, 1776, died in South Gibson, Pa., Sept. 12, 1858. He married in Westport, Conn., Nov. 2, 1797, Freelove Disbrow, daughter of Justus and Elizabeth (Sherwood) Disbrow of that place. She died in South Gibson, April 28, 1830, aged 49 years. He married (2d) in Clifford, Pa., June 22, 1831, Nabby Pickering Miller, widow of David Miller and daughter of Jotham and Elsie (Pickering) Pickering of Clifford. She was born May 4, 1786, and died in Lenox, Pa., March 27, 1867. "... resided in several different places in the vicinity of Fishkill, N. Y., until about 1806, when he purchased a farm near what is now called Farmers Mills, Putnam County, where he remained until his emigration to Pennsylvania ... His wife, Freelove, is described as possessing a small, lithe figure, energetic, industrious, and in every way a prudent helpmate, manufacturing with her own hands from the raw flax and wool the wherewithal to clothe her family. After the lapse of seventeen years, when the log cabin had been supplanted by the 'framed house,' and the wilderness was fast receding before the approach of civilization, at the dawn of better days, she was summoned to lay down her life work. "In personal appearance Samuel Resseguie was a type of foreign blood, his father being of French and his mother of Irish descent. He possessed perfect health, never being obliged to call a physician until his last sickness. His sanguine temperament, florid complexion, and great obesity rendered him fair, fat, and funny. Physically he bore a striking resemblance to Sir John Falstaff. His corpulence and longevity were transmitted to nearly all his children.... "Children : I. Betsey Elizabeth, b. July 12, 1798; d. Samuel Resseguie was the third child of William & Catharine (Secor) Resseguie, and a descendant of Alexandre de Resseguier, a French Hugenot refugee to London. The above information was submitted by G. Children: "1. Willis b. Jul 8, 1807 m. Paulina Jacas, Apr 30, 1826 2. Joseph B. b. Aug 5, 1809 m. Harriet Pepper, Jun 16, 1833 3. Davis b. Feb 20, 1813 m. Mary Warring, Apr 17, 1839 4. Dimon b. Clarinda Osburn, Sept 9, 1846 8. Betsey A. b. Aug 26, 1826 m. James H. Beveridge, Dec 24, 1849" Platt Disbrow lived in Sherman, CT, near Leach Hollow. He sold his land in 1848 and went to Hillsdale, NY, to live with his son Davis. His son Dimon's family is continued in Mrs. Morgan's record (see below). ______________________________ (5-8-8) REBECCA-5 DISBROW - The following is from Joan E. Ford, in a letter to me, dated 8 Dec. 1991: "I finally found a bit of additional information regarding Rebecca Disbrow Ford. She is listed in the 1880 Wood County [OH] census in West Mill Grove, Perry Twp., living with the family of her son-in-law Lewis Whitman and his second wife Sarah. At this time Rebecca's grandson William A. Whitman is 13 (William died five years later.) This is definitely the right Rebecca. She is listed as being 76 years old, born in New York, both parents born in Connecticut. She is listed as 'mother-in-law' and as a 'boarder.' I am now positive that she is indeed buried in Perry Twp., and either her grave is unmarked or somehow was not recorded by the people who compiled the cemetery listings. I think it is highly unlikely that she moved out of the county at age 76 or older." ______________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- Page 324 (5-9-1) BANKS DAVIS-5 DISBROW - It appears possible I may have wrongly placed Banks Davis Disbrow as a son of (5-9) Levi. As noted in the text, this assumption was based on a baptismal record in the Greens Farms church, wherein Levi Disbrow offered "Banks Davies" for baptism on 30 Oct. 1791. All other records of Banks Davis Disbrow show him in close proximity to (5-7) Asa Disbrow, whom I had assumed was his uncle. According to the family data received from Alice Morgan, Asa Disbrow and his wife Charity (Platt) had a son "Davis" born 8 Oct. 1782, a twin brother to Platt Disbrow. This date does match the 1850 census where Banks D. Disbrow gave his age as 67. Mrs. Morgan also notes that land records in Sherman (where Banks Disbrow was a blacksmith and mill operator) show Asa and Banks selling their land there in 1818, after which they both moved to Clinton Co., Ohio. I don't know how to explain the baptismal record unless perhaps it was a totally different person. ______________________________ (3-2-5-1) WILLIAM BRIDGEMAN-6 DISBRO - A copy of his will was submitted by Bonnie (Mrs. Norman) Disbro, from Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Cir. Doc. "D", No. 347. The will appears to be undated, but was probated 12 Oct. 1865, and provided: "1st that three lots ... in the Village of Berea ... to be deeded to my son Edward, he having paid for them. 2nd that the Hubbell Farm be sold ... 3rd that the property be kept together and used for the support and maintenance of my family ... 4th I appoint Merrill W. Baker, my son in law, to be my executor ..." Witnessed by John Wheeler and Adaline Pope. ______________________________ (5-7-5-4) DIMON-6 DISBROW - The following family record comes from Alice Morgan, via Susann Davis: "Dimon Disbrow, son of Platt, m. Jane Anne Hoag, Nov, 7, 1838. Children: 1. Lydia Ann b. Aug 9, 1843, d. Mar 7, 1893, m. George N. Pearce, 1859. He d. Apr 19, [1928?]. No issue. 2. David Hoag b. June 12, 1846 d. Property was first sold by George Pearce, widower of Lydia Ann Disbrow, to a N. Y. camp called 'Camp Arden.' Before [Lake] Candlewood was made there was a pond on the property called 'Pearce's Pond.' When I was a little girl we used to go up there fishing. Uncle George was living there then with his second wife. It was said the pond was so deep no one ever touched bottom. It is now under Lake Candlewood between the Knolls and the Isle." Alice (Disbrow) Morgan is a granddaughter of David Hoag Disbrow, who will be continued in Part II.
