    1. [DISBROW] Going out of town
    2. Michael Disbrow
    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner A note to all - My wife and I will be out of town from Saturday March 20th until April 1st, so emails and any other correspondence will go unanswered until after that time. Soon after I return I hope to make the Disbrow Civil War Soldiers cd available. It is essentially done now, but I have not burned any extra copies as I'd been hoping to hear that someone might have more files and/or photos to add. But I will go with what I have now and that will be a lot of information. When I notify this mailing list that the cd is available, I will give you a complete list of the contents so that each person can decide whether or not it's something they'd like to have. And I'd be glad to answer any individual questions about the contents ahead of time. I'm also putting together a cd that will have (at least) twelve "Disbrow Descendants Reports" on it, including the descendants of Henry and Margaret (Haddon) Disbrow of Mamaroneck, NY. Each of these reports traces the known descendants of a person named Disbrow who was either a known immigrant to the U. S., or whose origins are unknown or in question. None of the families in these reports have any known relationship to Thomas Disbrow of Fairfield, who is the subject of my published books. The Disbrow Family Newsletters will be another cd to come in the future. Before long I'll be setting up page on the Disbrow Web Site to fully explain the range of available Disbrow cd's and their contents. Sincerely, Mike

    1. [DISBROW] CW photos
    2. Michael Disbrow
    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner Subject - photos of CW soldier? I'm getting ready to "wrap up" the Disbrow Civil War soldier files CD and was wondering if anyone would like to include photos of their own ancestor's photos. I have some room left for that kind of thing, and I think it would be nice to include some photos of our Civil War Disbrows, but I only have a handful of pictures in my own collection - not very many. It wouldn't necessarily have to be a photo of the man in uniform - it could have been taken at any time during his life. Photos of the soldiers' gravestones, homes where they lived, families, etc. would be fine to include also. If you have photos you want to submit please let me know within the next week because I want to get this wrapped up soon and ready to burn to CD. Mike

    2. Michael Disbrow
    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner I (finally) got around to archiving all the older guestbook entries on the Disbrow web site, so the book is ready for you to sign in. If you've tried to sign recently and found the guestbook to be full, it should work now. You can access the guestbook and all the older entries from the bottom of the home page. To those of you who have emailed me recently and haven't gotten a reply, I'm working my way through them. My email was down for a few days and I got behind, so I apologize for that and you should be hearing from me soon. The Disbrow Civil War soldier records is about ready to burn to cd and make available. Please let me know if you're interested in that one so I can get an idea of how many copies to make initially. One more thing - Please remember to UNSUBSCRIBE and SUBSCRIBE when you change your email addy. I've been getting a lot of "Returned Mail" notices every time a message goes out on the mailing list. The service is supposed to automatically delete an address after three failed delivery attempts, but it doesn't do it so I keep getting them until I take the time to delete them manually. Thanks for helping me on that one. Mike

    2. Michael Disbrow
    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner Subject - Genealogy & history books for sale In an effort to "clear out" some of my clutter, I've decided to sell some of the genealogical books and periodicals in my possession. I was thinking about listing them on Ebay, but I before I spend the time it takes to do that I thought I'd see if anyone here on the Disbrow mailing list would be interested in the following items. 3. If someone from this list decides to bid on this document, please let me know. That way I won't be bidding against you. I believe these items need to stay within the family. So many times I see these go up for bid from collectors who have them only to try and sell them at outlandish prices. My only desire is to keep that from happening. I've been outbid but won't bid again if it is someone from the list. I received an email from Susan Gilbert (thanks!) that says the following: "This appears to be a seventh generation Disbrow if this is the William E. Disbrow b. 15 Mar 1844, d. 2 Mar 1907. 1. [DISBROW] Searching for an Indiana, Illinios connection
    2. KDornbusch
    3. I am looking for anything to back up the family lore about my Husband's GG Grandmother. We have very little info and no documentation due to Indiana's not requiring birth and death certificates until quite late. Any info and/or suggestions on how or where to search would be appreciated. Albert Alphonzo Brown b. abt1858 in Freemont, Ind. m. Annie Brody [b. abt 1865] at City West or Liberty Mills, Ind. about 1883. Albert's mother was Cleo Disbro who family lore says was from Canada. No family member, still living, seems to know who her spouse was. They had several children all girls. One of which was Edith, who was born at Pullman, Ill. 24 July 1888. She m.Walter Huff and they lived in Porter Co. Indiana until her death from the influenza epidemic in 1918. We wrote to Pullman as family lore said Albert worked for the Pullman Co. He was a carpenter by trade. The fact that Edith was born there would lead one to believe it to be true...however the researcher was not able to find him. TIA , Kate

    1. [DISBROW] Civil War soldier files update
    2. Michael Disbrow
    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner Subject - update on progress of the Disbrow Civil War soldier files project The project I am working on now is to scan and burn to CD the Civil War military and/or pension files for soldiers by the name of Disbro, Disbrow, Disborough, etc. With one exception these are the files stored at the National Archives in Washington, DC (that one exception is the file of Reuel L. Disbro, which was obtained from the Veteran's Administration). Over the years my distant cousin, the late Cash Disbrow, and I, collected these files by ordering copies from the NARA one or two at a time. We were never able to get all of the available files, as time and cost were two big factors against us, but we did manage to obtain quite a few. (You can still order the files from NARA, but the last I checked the cost was about $10 per file, and you have to wait several weeks to get them.) I have been scanning the files as time permits and making good progress. At present I have scanned 40 out of the 51 files, and when finished I will have scanned nearly 1,000 individual pages. I was hoping that some of you subscribers to this mailing list might be able to help by supplying copies of Disbrow Civil War soldier files that are missing from my collection. So far only one person has volunteered to help by sending scans of three files that she has in her possession. Those will be a nice addition, but I'm hoping for even more. Below is the list of all (51) of the Disbrow soldier files I have that will be included in this project. If you have files for any Disbrow Civil War soldier not on this list, would you please help us by contributing copies? Please contact me if you can help out this way. I am offering to give one free copy of the final CD to anyone who contributes at least one file to the project. If there is space allowing on the CD I think it would also be nice to include some extra material such as photos of your Civil War ancestor(s), or any such material that would be related to their Civil War experience (diaries, letters, etc.). The photos would not have to be taken during the war, but at any time in the soldier's life either before or after. I have two different photos of my own great-grandfather, Albert J. Disbrow of the 50th New York Engineers, both taken after the war, that I would include, and a few others that have been sent to me in the past, but any others would be greatly appreciated and would lend more interest to this project. Contact me with what you have and I will let you know if I could use it. For those who have asked, it doesn't look as if there will be room to include any other files except for those men by the name of Disbrow (and various spellings). I'm sorry, I wish I could include others, but this is principally a "DISBROW" project. Here are the Disbrow Civil War soldier files I have, with the state they each served from: Abram J. 1. [DISBROW] Disbrowe/Desborough
    2. Paul Desborough
    3. Hello I believe I may have an indirect connection with the Disbrows of the US. As you can see from my surname and email I am a Desborough living in New Zealand, but my father is from London and I am researching his ancestry. I read with interest the book on John Disbrowe posted on your website, and I'm aware of the many variations in the spelling of this "group" of surnames (i.e. Desborough, Desborou, Desboro, Disbrowe, Disbrow, Disbro, Disborough, Disberry, Disbery, Disbury). For one of the family groups of my ancestors, I understand that the siblings of one family used four different spellings! This might be drawing a long bow, but it does seem that over time, the UK descendants may have gravitated toward "Desborough", where the US descendants have used "Disbrow(e)". There appear to be around 600 phone listings for Disbrow in the US, and only about 30 Desboroughs, where in the UK there are about 340 listings for Desborough and only 5 for Disbrow. There are also about 20 Desboroughs in each of New Zealand and Australia, although in my case for the other New Zealand Desboroughs must be very distant relatives if at all. My reason for contacting the list is to ask if anyone knows of any research on the UK Desborough line. Many thanks Paul Desborough

    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner Subject - Disbrow Soldier Files CD#1 now available The Disbrow soldier files for the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Mexican War are on CD and available to purchase if anyone would be interested. I want to make sure you know exactly what is on this CD before you decide to get one, and if you have any questions about it, please e-mail me. The CD contains scans of the papers in each soldier's NARA (National Archives & Records Administration) file, located at the NARA building in Washington, DC. The papers I scanned are not the originals, but photocopies of the same, so the quality will vary but most are quite readable. The images are saved as .jpg files, which are readable on most home computers with either Windows or Mac operating systems, and can be printed or copied to another program such as Family Tree Maker, etc. Here is a list of the soldiers whose NARA files are on this CD: American Revolution: ASA DISBROW - CT CALEB DISBROW - CT HENRY DISBROW - CT JOHN D. DISBROW - NJ JOSEPH DISBROW - CT JOSHUA DISBROW - CT JUSTUS DISBROW - CT SIMON DISBROW - CT War of 1812: ELIAS DISBROW - NY JACOB DISBROW - NY JAMES DISBROW - NY SAMUEL DISBROW - CT SANFORD DISBROW - NY SMITH DISBROW - NY THOMAS DISBROW - NY ZALMON A. DISBROW - NY Mexican War: LARREN E. DISBROW - MI The above is NOT a complete list of all the Disbrow men who served in these wars, only the ones for whom I have NARA files. So to round things out I have also included some supplemental material on the CD and that material includes: NARA Revolutionary War Index to Military Service - Disbrows NARA Revolutionary War Index to Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files - Disbrows Information from The Daughters of the American Revolution "Lineage Books" Notes on the CT Disbrow soldier files from the book "Families of Fairfield", Vol. III, by Donald L. Jacobus NARA War of 1812 Military Service Index - Disbrows Disbrow page from the book, "Index of Awards - Soldiers of the War of 1812" NARA Mexican War Military Service Index - Disbrows Brief genealogical notes on each of the identifiable soldiers. Again, please question me ahead of time if you're not sure about something, because (as with most CDs you buy) I can't give any refunds once the CD is purchased, except for CDs which arrive damaged or defective. You can purchase the CDs directly from me at the address below. The cost is $10, which includes first-class postage and handling. Cash, checks or money orders are accepted. Michael S. All the files I personally own are of DISBROW men only, because that is the name I was working on and I didn't get much into the collateral lines. If anyone has files of men who married a Disbrow woman, or children of Disbrow women, I would include those if I had copies. For example let's say an ELIZABETH DISBROW married a JOHN SMITH and they had two sons. If Elizabeth's husband and/or either of her sons served in the military and you have those files, I would include them in the project if you want to send copies. Second - There will be two CD's to cover all the military files because they can't all fit on one. The first CD will contain files of those men who served in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. The second CD will contain files of those men who served in the Civil War. I do have CD #1 completed, unless I hear from someone within the next few days that they have a file to add to the ones I listed in my previous message. At that time I will notify this list about the cost and also post it on the Disbrow web site. Third - My next project, after the Civil War files are done, will be the Disbrow Family Newsletters. These will include the newsletters that I published from 1984-87 and NOT the ones published by Cash Disbrow after that time. There are reasons for not including Cash Disbrow's newsletters but I can't go into that at this time. Just one more note. In case you aren't aware of it, you can see all of the past messages on this mailing list by going to the archives at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/DISBROW And don't forget to occasionally check out the guestbook on the Disbrow web site at: http://us.geocities.yahoo.com/gb/view?member=mdisbrow1 Mike

    3. >Mike, This sounds great! I would personally love to see the Disbrow Newsletters on CD. I don't have any records of any Disbrow on the war mentioned but I do have Civil War records on Abraham Disbro and his sons James & John Disbro of Richland County, Ohio. these files are fairly thick and would take a great deal of time to transcribe. If you can tell me what format you are looking for I can begin because I know it will take a while. Especially with everything else I have going. Do you want them scanned? Thanks for all of your work on the Disbro/w family. 3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner (2nd try - I apologize if you get this twice) Greetings! I've started working on a project that's long overdue and that is to get all my Disbrow materials on CDs so they can be easily shared with whoever is interested. My first endeavor is the military and pension files. In an effort to make these as complete as possible I'm sending out a plea to all who have procured any of these records from the National Archives, pertaining to any Disbrow soldier. My first CD will include all the records I have of Disbrow men who served in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. Here is a list of all the military and/or pension files I have, the soldier's name and the state from which he served: American Revolution: ASA DISBROW - CT CALEB DISBROW - CT HENRY DISBROW - CT JOHN D. DISBROW - NJ JOSEPH DISBROW - CT JOSHUA DISBROW - CT JUSTUS DISBROW - CT SIMON DISBROW - CT War of 1812: ELIAS DISBROW - NY JACOB DISBROW - NY JAMES DISBROW - NY SAMUEL DISBROW - CT SANFORD DISBROW - NY SMITH DISBROW - NY THOMAS DISBROW - NY ZALMON A. DISBROW - NY Mexican War: LARREN E. DISBROW - MI If any of you have files of men not listed above and would like to share them, please contact me soon, as I'd like to get them included on the CD. I'll also be including some supplemental materials, such as complete lists of all Disbrow soldiers whose records are on file with the National Archives, and some brief genealogical notes on each of the identifiable men. When the CDs are ready, I'll send a notice out on this list and also post it on the Disbrow web site. The cost will be minimal. My next project will be to get all the Civil War soldiers' records scanned, which will take quite a while as there are many papers. If anyone has thoughts or suggestions on what other records you would like to see on CD please let me know. One thought I'd had was to copy all the Disbrow Family Newsletters for the years I was publishing it, 1984-87, as there is quite a bit of good info in them and most people have probably never seen them.
