3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner Here's another query I received lately I thought I'd throw out to the group and see if any one can offer some help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Kelibea3@aol.com Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2007 00:06:08 EDT Subject: Disbrow S & D Co. To: mdisbrow1@sbcglobal.net My name is David Obst. I came upon a big oak board that has Disbrow S and D Co. Cedar Rapids IA, painted in block letters on it. It was part of some kitchen cabinets from the 1920's. I was just wondering more about the history of the piece. For example, was it part of another piece of furniture before it came part of a cabinet. It does look like it had been a table top at one time. Anyway my phone number is 319-366-2287. I did find that a family of Disbrows lived in Iowa in the late 1800's through the 1900's that owned a log mill. I wondered if they were related. Hope life is treating you good. God Bless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm sure I have heard about this company during my research on the Disbrows, and I probably have some info on it somewhere. The trouble is all my indexes are by first names, and I can't put a first name to this problem. If memory serves me correctly, the Disbrow Sash and Door Co. was originally in Clinton, Iowa. Can someone give David and me some help on this? - Mike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's another piece of Disbrow trivia for you: Did you know that the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant chain was founded by a fellow named James Disbrow - a former Olympic figure skater? Just Wikipedia the name and you'll find an item on him.

    3. >From - Mike Disbrow, listowner The following was received from James E. Disbrow, Apr. 16: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "James Disbrow" jdisbrow@aquatron.us To: mdisbrow1@sbcglobal.net Dear Sir/Madam, I am fascinated with the idea of a large gathering of Disbrows a name not common. My father is from New Jersey, Durrell E. Disbrow married to Flora Katherine Cavender of Old Hickory Tenn. My dad’s father Willard E. Disbrow I believe was from Heights Town NJ he married Emma Fenemore sadly I do not know where my grandmother originated. I do know they lived in Old Hickory Tenn for many years before residing in St. Petersberg FL. My Grandfather had three sons Durrelle E. Disbrow, my father age 89, Otis Disbrow deceased and Revile Disbrow also deceased he also had a daughter Cynneth Disbrow, also deceased. Otis had two daughters, Emma Lou and Carolyn Sue and a son Keathen. Revile had two sons Nicholas and Randal, Durrelle had two daughters and two sons Christy, Kathy, David and James (me) Cynneth had two daughters Jerri and Cynneth. I would appreciate any insight you can offer regarding the family. I know we originated in England I do not know if there exists a cost of arms if there is anything I can ask my dad regarding his family let me know and I will be glad to do so. James E. Disbrow ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My reply to James is as follows: James - Thanks for writing. I do have some information on your family and it mainly comes from a book that was printed in 1979 known as "The Disbrow Book" (for lack of a better name). It was one of those books where they asked people by the name of Disbrow to submit information, then they printed it and sold it back to them. There are two pages that would be of interest to you - one submitted by Willard V. Disbrow (your grandfather) and one by Otis Crandall Disbrow (your uncle). The pages I have are photocopies of the submitters' own handwriting answering questions on a printed form. I can scan and send you copies by email if you want them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Full name - Willard V. Was known as "Whoopee." You could hear him holler from one end of town to the other on Sat. night." Signature - Otis C. Disbrow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The above may give you some clues for researching your family history, such as your great grandparents' names (Edward and Sarah). I cannot tell you any more on Edward Disbrow because there were quite a few by that name in that time period. But if you can get more information on him I might be able to add more generations to your Disbrow ancestry from my files. Another change - you gave me your grandfather's name as Willard E., but he clearly gave it as Willard V. and so did Otis. (Interestingly my father's name was also Willard. ) Social Securtiy death records show that Willard V. Disbrow died in Aug. 1985 in Franklin Co., Tennessee. I don't have any additional info on his wife Emma L. Fenimore. I'm going to send your inquiry out to our Disbrow mailing list, which will reach about 100 subscribers, so you may hear more from someone there. Quite a few are interested in the New Jersey Disbrows. Best of luck and keep me informed of your progress. Mike Disbrow ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As I stated to James, I have no further info on his gt. grandfather Edward, although I have a number of "unplaced" Edwards from that time period in my miscellaneous files. Perhaps someone in this group can help. You can contact James directly, and/or use the mailing list to keep the rest of us informed on the issue. Mike

And in order to fill out the cd and make it even more valuable as a Disbrow research tool, I've added all twelve of the "Disbrow Descendants Reports". Really, there is a very large amount of material here (almost 700 pages in the newsletters alone!), that many will find valuable for the research on their Disbrow ancestry. Here is an explanation of exactly what is on this cd: --------------------------------------------------------- The Disbrow Family Newsletter (DFN) was published from 1984 through the first quarter of 1999, with a four-year break between 1992 and 1997. The first publisher/editor was Michael S. Disbrow (myself), and in 1989 the project was turned over to Cassius L. "Cash" Disbrow, who continued to edit and publish the newsletter until early 1999 when he had to quit on account of his health. Cash increased the size of the newsletter from the previous eight, to twenty pages per issue, and printed several long excerpts in serial format from manuscripts in his collection, as well as material submitted by others. (Cash passed away on 9 June 2001 in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 77.) The main purpose of the DFN was to collect and share information on the history and genealogy of the various Disbrow (and various spellings) families, prinicipally of the United States and Canada. At the same time I was trying to gather as much information as I could on the descendants of Thomas and Mercy (Holbridge) Disbrow, for the purpose of having a printed volume made of the same, which project was accomplished with the publication of "The Descendants of Thomas and Mercy (Holbridge) Disbrow" in two volumes, the first of which was printed in 1992, and the second in 1996. The pages of the DFN contain many different types of records, including biographies from county histories and other such books, census records and indexes, family Bible records, cemetery inscriptions, excerpts from family genealogies, old letters and diaries, obituaries, vital statistics from town and county records collections, military lists, etc., etc., and in all, fill nearly 700 pages of material. There is an all-name index included for the years 1984 through 1988, and individual indexes for the years 1989 and 1990. Unfortunately at this time there are no indexes covering the years after 1990 (with one exception - 1997), however starting with DFN No. 30 (Apr. 1991) Cash started putting a Table of Contents on the front page of each issue, which does help with locating items of interest. --------------------------------------------------------- The "Disbrow Descendant Reports" have been compiled from research done by myself and by others with an interest in these families who have shared their information with me. Much of the information was turned up while I was researching my own line (the descendants of Thomas Disbrow of Fairfield, CT,) and the families in these reports are either from a different Disbrow immigrant, or cannot be placed within the known descendants of Thomas. I make no claim that all the data is entirely accurate, or that these reports comprise a complete list of descendants. I am no longer doing any personal research on any of these families, but only want to make the information available for future researchers to use as a starting point for their own research. All, or at least most, of the references used are listed within the reports, each report has an all-name index at the end, and there is usually a date shown to indicate when the report was last updated. Here are the titles of the reports: DDR-1 - Descendants of Furbank & Susan (Howcroft) Disbrow of Wayne Co., NY DDR-2 - Descendants of Henry & Catherine Disbrow of Montgomery Co., NY DDR-3 - Descendants of Henry & Sarah (Anderson) Disbrow of Detroit & Monroe, MI DDR-4 - Descendants of Israel & Jerusha Disbrow of Danbury, CT DDR-5 - Descendants of John & Sarah (Few) Disbrow of Lockport, NY DDR-6 - Descendants of William & Fanny (Jackway) Disbrow of Conneaut, OH DDR-7 - Descendants of Samuel & Anna (Patterson) Disbrow of Dutchess Co., NY DDR-8 - Descendants of Samuel C. & Mercy (Coon) Disbrow of Broome Co., NY DDR-9 - Descendants of William & Sarah (Savage) Disbrow DDR-10 - Descendants of William H. & Arminta "Submit" Disbrow of Milford, MI DDR-11 - Descendants of Abraham & Jane (Ferguson) Disbro of Richland Co., OH DDR-12 - Descendants of Henry & Margaret (Haddon?) Disbrow of Mamaroneck, NY (Note - all of these reports can also be found on the Disbrow Family Website) --------------------------------------------------------- The files on this disk are in .pdf format, made with Adobe Acrobat version 5, and have been burned to Maxell CD-R Pro disks, which are purportedly "scratch resistant" and have "superior archival life", according to the packaging. (Elsewhere I have heard these referred to as "100 year disks".) You will need some version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, which - if you don't already have it - can be downloaded for free from the Adobe web site, and the address is included on the disk. There are also two Notepad (.txt) files with notes about content and other explanatory information. The cost of the disk is $12 (including postage). I'll accept personal checks (made out to me), or money orders. Send to: Michael S. Disbrow 11413 East 20 Rd. I am trying to determine if Catherine and James' oldest son is named Albert, and if his second son's middle name is Lorenzo (Edwin L. Arnold). Albert was my great grandfather and I am trying to locate his parents. Do you know any Disbrow who might have descended from Justin and Elizabeth and might have this information?

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone.
