    3. The first Dillons and Fitzgeralds were Norman knights in the employ of Henry the II of England during the invasion of Ireland in the late twelfth century. The first instance of intermarriage between the Dillons and Fitzgeralds occurred way back, when Henry Dillon married Alivia daughter of Maurice Fitzgerald. Henry was the son of Sir Thomas Dillon who was the son of Henry Delion or Dillon "progenitor of all those who bear the name of Dillon". Maurice Fitzgerald was the progenitor of all the Fitgeralds. So the connection goes back to the thirteenth century. There probably have been other marriages between the families over the centuries.
