    1. Samuel DILLON (1776-1859) VA>OH>VA>IL
    2. MRS JEAN T GILLETT
    3. I would like to exchange information on Samuel Dillon, b. 1776/77, in Culpepper Co., VA according to biographical sketches of several of his children. He apparently had a first marriage prior to 1800, wife's name unknown, and possibly a son from that marriage b. ca 1800. In 1802 he m. Nancy Fletcher [dau of Joshua and Agnes (Hutchens) Fletcher] in Fauquier Co., VA. They apparently lived in Wheeling, Ohio Co., VA between 1804 and 1808. Nancy died ca 1809 in either VA or OH. Two children of that marriage: Joshua, b. 1806, and Harriet, b. 1808. On 02 Apr 1812 he married Vashti Borton (dau of Benjamin) in Guernsey Co ., OH, and in Aug he enlisted in the military (war of 1812) in Belmont Co., OH. In 1813 he was elected clerk of Oxford twp., Guernsey Co., OH . He appears on the 1820 census in Guernsey Co. living near James Dillon, John Dillon, Vashti's father Benjamin Borton, and brothers-in- law Rubin and Benj. Borton. Between 1825 and 1834 the family reportedly lived in Wheeling. The family appears on the 1830 census there. In 1834/35 Samuel moved with the two older children to Sangamon Co., IL. He died there in 1859. Samuel and Vashti had the following children (from pension file correspondence and siblings listed in children's biographical sketches): George W. (b. 1812, OH), Rachel (b. 1815/16, m. Francis Hornbrook in VA ), Agness (b. 20 Dec 1816, m. Harrison Bishop in IL), William (b. 1818/19, OH), James M. (b. 1819/20, Guernsey Co., OH), Rev. Josiah (b. 07 Oct 1822, Guernsey Co., OH), Benjamin B. (b. 1823/24, OH), Alfred (b. ca 1827, OH?), and Ezer (dates unknown.) Vashti and most of the children remained in Wheeling, [W] VA where she died in abt 1884. From clues in the biog. sketches of the children, we believe "our" Samuel to be a grandson of John Dillon of Bucks Co., PA, but so far have been unsuccessful in definitely identifying which of John's sons is his father. One of the difficulties is the presence of a *second* Samuel Dillon in OH during the same time period in Butler and Hamilton Cos. In published research, that Samuel is attributed to William Dillon of Loudoun Co., VA. Has anyone worked on either of these "Samuel"s or related lines? Would be happy to share the information we have. Jean Gillett [email protected]
