He died in a traffic accident northeast of Holyoke on Wednesday, August 11, 1999. He was 57 years of age. Gary was the oldest of four children. He had two brothers, Leland and Don, and a sister, Ardie. He attended school in Bridgeport, NE and in Sterling, graduating from Sterling High School with the class of 1958. Peterson served his country in Vietnam in the U.S. Air Force. Gary Peterson was united in marriage to Sandra Sue Dick on May 22, 1962, in Kansas. To this union were born two children, Gary and Tami. The Petersons were stationed in Clovis City, OK, when he was discharged after six years of service. While he was in the Air Force, Gary received training in electronics. Following his discharge, he moved his family to Kansas and then to Beatrice, NE, where a son, Gary, was born in 1965. They relocated to Dallas, TX, and Gary went to work as a technician for the Docutel Corporation. He was a part of the team that developed the first ATM machine. Peterson was promoted to Manager of Technicians and transferred to Seattle, WA. He moved to Maitland, FL to work with Financial Data Sciences. While he was employed with that company, his work involved testifying before the U.S. House and Senate regarding regulations in the banking industry. The Petersons moved to Boca Raton, FL where Gary worked with Sandi in her pet shop. He maintained free-lance employment in the computer industry working with area pet shops, the Miami zoo and Parrot Jungle of Miami. Gary and his wife moved to Holyoke in 1996. He worked as a computer analyst independently and for Computers, Etc. He was preceded in death by his father. Peterson is survived by his wife, Sandi Peterson of Holyoke; his children, Tami Wymard and husband Mark of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Gary Peterson and wife Lynette of Boca Raton, FL; his mother, Frieda Peterson of Holyoke; two brothers, Leland Peterson of Stratton and Don Peterson and wife, Peggy of Carrolton, TX; a sister, Ardie Besse and husband Fred of Holyoke; and four grandchildren. Memorial services for Gerald Leroy Peterson were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 1999, at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke. Rev. Gary Rahe of Zion Lutheran Church officiated at the service.
