Here are just the most pertinent facts taken from the Will of William DEWHURST of Chorley,(Lancashire, ENG) Gentleman 12 Jan 1844, Proven Nov 1846 William died 19 Sept 1846 - buried 23 Sep 1846, age 72 years Taken from a 15 page will. After all debts, funeral expenses paid, I give and bequeath to my wife ELIZABETH DEWHURST, the sofa and large mahogany table now in my front parlour, and purchased by her own money, and all my wines and spirits, and provisions, For all her life, the use of all my household goods, and furniture, plate, linen, fixt. Pictures, ornaments, of my home as long as she keeps them in reasonable repair, allowing for wear and tear, Also to my wife the dwellinghouse in Chapel St, Chorley, with garden fictures. She paying the ground rent, land taxes, and all parochial taxes. An annuity of (Eng.Pound) 20.00.0, also the same upon my freehold estates, in Lower Darwen. In the occupation of Lawrence LONGWORTH, John PONFRIET and Lawrence WHITTAKER. and also estates, Third parts of an estate called JOLLY's sit. in Lower Darwen. Rents due the 13th May and 12th November every year, also to be paid if my wife stays unmarried a further (pound) 40.00.0 and (pound)20.00.0 if she remarries. {The above amounts have been explained to me by Sheila as 40 pounds, no shillings and no pence.} I charge the same amenities respectively on my three estates in Whitefield, in the said county held by the Earl of Derby and on my leaseholds dwelling houses in Preston St, whithin Chorley, rented by James PILKINGTON, and Thomas SUMNER. I give my three sons, William Kirkham DEWHURST, Edward DEWHURST and John DEWHURST (with a line through John's name) my said freehold estates in Lower Darwen. Also in the said undivided third of the estate called Jollys in Lower Darwen. And to the use of them William Kirkham DEWHURST, Edward DEWHURST and John DEWHURST (again a line through John's name) as tenants in common not as joint tenants. Also (Pound) 245.00.0 now owing to me, secured to me on a mortgage on certain estate in Lower Darwen called the Crow Trees. I give to my sons Edward DEWHURST and James Henry DEWHURST to be executors, and I sign a certain principle sum of (pound) 245.00.0 lent by me to my son John DEWHURST, and secured to me by a mortgage situated near Cowling Bridge Chorley, (saying to executors to get what they can back of John looks like we have a black sheep here.) ? I also forgive and release and bequeath to my said son John for his own use a debt of (pound) 6.10.0 now owing by him to me, and also a further sum of (pound) 123.8/10d advanced and lent to him to buy a property in Lower Darwen. I absolutely forgive my son James Henry DEWHURST (pound) 22.18.1d now owing to me. Shares in Bolton and Preston Railway concern to John and Edward DEWHURST, money in trust for my four daughters, assurance with Royal Exchange to the sum of (pound) 600.00.0 to be payable to my executors administrated within 3 months from the deaths of myself and of Johathan Haworth Peel of Haverford West, Gentleman were both die as by the invest of policy. Also my shares in Parliamentry stocks, and three estates at Whitefield. Shares in four parts for my daughters Maria DALZIEL, wife of William DALZIEL, Sarah MACKENZIE, wife of William MACKENZIE, Eliza DEWHURST, in trust, also in trust for my daughter Ann HOLT, wife of Mr. Samuel HOLT, Stating Ann's name be good enough on debts incurred. I give and devise my per in the North Aisle or side of St. Mary's Church, Manchester, No. 38 to my son Edward DEWHURST. I give my silver Tankered to my son John DEWHURST I give my silver cup belonging formerly to my Great Grandfather, Thomas KIRKHAM to my son William Kirkham DEWHURST, I give my large water landscape in my front parlour to my son Edward DEWHURST and my portfolios of drawings to my son James Henry DEWHURST, I give all my books to my four sons in equal shares after their mother's death everything to be sold and shared equally. The share of my daughter Maria DALZIEL, to be for sole and separate use independent of her present husband. Also interest to be accrued and grow thereon in trust for my late son Thomas DEWHURST in equal shares to his children George William DEWHURST and Frances DEWHURST. I give and bequeath and release to my son William Kirkham DEWHURST, all and every sum and sums of money now owing by him to me with interest. I give to my Grandaughter Elizabeth DEWHURST now living with me (pound) 5.00.0 and also at the time of my death a suit of mourning. Codicil added 12 jan 1844 (4 pages) My 8 shares in Bolton and Preston Railways to be placed in trust for my wife Elizabeth DEWHURST. And after her death shared between my four daughters. {Later his daughter Ann HOLT died since he made the first will, so her share was divided between the other three girls - stating again that Maria DALZIEL share was for her use only.} {Unable to copy all will consisted of 15 pages, 16"X16" also unable to photo copy as corners are sealed and they will not copy if the corners are sealed. It had to be done longhand.}
