    1. [DEWHURST-L] ROLL CALL - COUNT OFF NOW!
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, This is your merry listowner asking for a Roll Call... A Roll Call, for those who may be new to the list, is a time I call for a couple of times per year where all listmembers offer your family lines to the list. If you have made progress, tell us what you have learned and what you are working on... if you stuck are in the same place you were at the last roll call, just list your basic line (EXAMPLE: John Doe, b. 1845, NY > James Doe, b. 6 Feb 1865, US County, US State > Suzie Q., b. 2 June 1890, m. J.Q. Handsome, 15 June 1908, NY, NY, d. 4 July 1989 - Suzie Q was my beloved Grandma), maybe one of the new listmembers is looking for the same line?? This is how we all we sort ourselves into our basic lines and get good exchange happening.... We have had quite a few new subscribers in the last month, yet list activity has been slow... knowing that the "newbies" may be hanging back waiting to see WHO we are talking about on this list and knowing that the "oldsters" may not be posting because they figure everyone already KNOWS who they are looking for (and, after all, we are nice people and we do not want to bore everyone to absolute tears with our "brick walls") - the result is no one is communicating! So, 1-2-3! "Bring us your tired and your weary......" and let's begin an online celebration of who we are! Happy 4th of July to those in the USA..... Happy Hot Weather to the rest of you - those of you down under, (uhhm) stay warm?!? Jana ;]

    1. Re: [DEWHURST-L] Welcome William Dewhurst!
    2. Marsha MacDowell
    3. Hello - this information is interesting as Carl Dewhurst and Mary Steele were the grandparents of my husband, Charles "Kurt" Dewhurst. However, Kurt had been told that his grandfather was Carl Edward Dewhurst and his great-grandfather was Carl Rosenon Dewhurst. Also Kurt had been told that Carl Edward had immigrated from England to NYC via Trinidad. A pevious posting to this list regarding Carl Dewhurst also identified some discrepancies. So, any help in clearing up any discrepancies of information and filling in more would be much appreciated! Here is what we had: Carl Edward Dewhurst (b. London?, England?) and Mary Steele (born in ?, England). Carl first immigrated to Trinidad with his brother Harry where they both played on a cricket? or rugby team. Harry then moved to Toronto, married and raised a family including daughter Colleen (the famous actress). Carl moved from Trinidad to New York City where he worked in an office for a railroad. He met and married Mary Steele in NYC and the couple moved to northern NJ where they lived in several locations. Mary, an orphan, was raised in London in an orphanage from which Queen Victoria often purchased needlework. Mary, a proficient crocheter until she died, always claimed that she sewed for the Queen. Also, here is the information we have on Carl and Mary's children: * Charles Edward Allaire (or Alair) Dewhurst, b. 4/5/12, d. 2/7/78, m. Hermina Jule Hanzl 6/23/13, had one son: Charles Kurt Dewhurst, b. 12/21/48 * Henry Dewhurst, b. 8/2/13, m. Evelyn ?, d. July 87; had one son: Jay * Dorothy Dewhurst, b. 1/7/18, m. John Amrine, d. 6/18/88; had no children * Richard Dewhurst, m. Joan Brewer; had two sons: Carl and Richard B. * Allen Dewhurst, m. Nancy ?; had two sons: Todd and Scott ; had one daughter: Robin We also know that Mary Steele died November 30, 1977. -- Marsha MacDowell ************ [from "Theresa Dewhurst" <tdew@worldnet.att.net>, 5/23/99]>Hi William, > I've got some info about a family (not mine,) that you might want to hold >on to. 1. [DEWHURST-L] Listowner Post - please read.....
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hello all, Below you will find a "State of Rootsweb" article from the most recent Rootsweb Review. It is in response to a letter from a Rootsweb Donor who objected to Rootsweb's latest attempt to gather monetary support and keep itself going without commercializing itself as many other genealogical groups have been forced to do. So many of us use Rootsweb heavily and depend upon it as an affordable, accessible communciation vehicle. Just think for a moment what it would be like if it just "went away....." Rootsweb hosts my personal website, allows me to keep eight mailing lists going (my time is voluntary), and gives me the opportunity to manage GenConnect surname boards. I have been very lucky in that some of you have stepped forward to manage the GenConnect part of our surname quests and for that I am forever grateful as my available time is not endless ;] I truly believe a collaborative approach to genealogical research is what will offer us all the best results in the long run. When I look at the additional data I have been able to add to my own family tree in just the last year thanks to the fact that Rootsweb gives me a place to host it for $50/year (find anything cheaper w/o annoying commercials popping up all the time!) so many of you could fiund me as a "new cousin" and add your data, I feel astonished! I have never made such quick progress in so many lines in all the 30 other years I have dabbled in genealogy! The "brick walls" are falling thanks largely to Rootsweb, I think! Please take the time to read this informative article and see if you can manage even a very small donation to help keep us all up in our trees! Thanks in advance to each and every one of you! Jana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When we launched RootsWeb, we assumed that our users would prefer to support us as much as they were able, in exchange for a site open to all, without banners plastered all over everything and without having resources locked up (as is done at other genealogy sites), available only for fees on the order of $60 per year. Instead, people can support RootsWeb for as little as $12 per year. We thus hoped that a reasonable fraction of our users, perhaps half of them, would support us in some way. And because we expected support from the community, we made promises to projects like USGenWeb that we would freely host them for the good of the Internet genealogy community. We have no intention of reneging on those early promises, but it has been difficult, because the community support we anticipated has not been there. Although people use the site like crazy, fewer than 7% of our users have chipped in to keep things going. The other 93%? Perhaps they're busy, or they're broke, or they won't pay unless they have to, or they don't think RootsWeb is useful. Who knows? But it means that RootsWeb has run at a cash flow loss. In simple terms, Karen Isaacson and Brian Leverich have donated not only their time as system administrators but a substantial part of their personal resources to provide the genealogical community with RootsWeb. The rest of RootsWeb's staff have also made substantial contributions. Because RootsWeb's costs exceed its income, we can't provide all the genealogical facilities we'd like to support. These could include online searchable databases of pension records, census indexes, vital records, or countless other valuable genealogical services that we could easily provide -- if only we could afford the staff to support them. And, ultimately, RootsWeb can't even continue to exist if we don't bring our costs and revenues into balance, something we want to have under control before the transition to non-profit status (as opposed to losing money status) is completed. We are doing what we can to remedy the situation. For instance, we are selling banner advertisements where we can. However, this alone will never provide enough revenue to cover the costs of the unbannered volunteer projects which consume most of RootsWeb's resources yet by their very nature produce no direct revenue, even as they provide invaluable content to the genealogical community. The new communities, from their inception, will be fully supported by advertising. They will be paying their own way. We can shift some of the costs of maintaining the Web, mailing list, GenConnect, and search engine servers onto the new communities, so that the new communities will subsidize a genealogical community that hasn't been supporting itself. Although we have been disappointed in the amount of financial support of the genealogical community, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the writer of the letter above and the other 7% of our users who have helped make RootsWeb available to the whole community. Without their support and encouragement, there would be no RootsWeb. If you would like to join the folks who are making RootsWeb possible and thus help us bring new genealogical data online, freely available to all, please visit: <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> or send e-mail to: RW-info@rootsweb.com

    1. [DEWHURST-L] Accessing the List Archives
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, It has been awhile since I have done any housekeeping (yeah, on the list AND at home ;] genealogists are notorious that way.....) and we have had lots of new "subbers." Here is an FYI on how to access the Mailing List Archives! Lots of good stuff has been discussed here, and you never have to be "out of the loop" thanks to the Archives! Have fun........ Just a reminder, especially for new subscribers, that all of the messages over the last two years have been archived at RootsWeb and are available for searching by search words. To search the surname-l archives, point your web browser to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl This will take you directly to the page to begin a search. You will be asked for the name of the list followed by a "submit" button to click on. The next screen has examples of search words and a "Query" blank. Fill the blank with the word you wish to search for and then click on the "search" button. The next screen will give information about the search. There will also be a place to choose how to view the messages. Choose "Full" from among the choices. The messages should then appear on the next screen to scroll through. You can then go back and choose a different word and begin another search. Or you can experiment with the different choices on how to view the messages such as: From, To Message ID, Subject, content-type, message-body. If you have other surnames you are researching, you can go back and choose another surname List to search. Happy Hunting! Jana Black Listowner, KIRWIN-L

    1. [DEWHURST-L] Respecting privacy researching genealogy......
    2. Jana Black
    3. This article was posted in the Rootsweb Review. I thought it offered some excellent food for thought regarding our responsibility as genealogists to protect the privacy of our family members as we research in an online world... Jana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OXYMORON: PRIVACY AND THE INTERNET by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG <RWR-editors@rootsweb.com> Genealogists use RootsWeb and the incredible power of the Internet to learn more about ancestors and to find far-flung cousins. However we are caught in an incongruous position on privacy matters. Everyone wants their privacy respected, but are you invading that of your relatives? Technology enables us to share genealogical information easily and quickly via e-mail, mailing lists, chat rooms, bulletin boards, newsgroups, GEDCOMs, CDs and Web sites. In our eagerness to obtain and to share data we forget that our living family members have a right to privacy. We also post personal details about ourselves that we would not put on the local supermarket bulletin board. Aunt Martha might reveal her real birth date and confess that she had a child out of wedlock when she was 19. Sweet old Uncle Jim may tell you that he has been married and divorced six times. However, you are invading their privacy if you publish this information or if you share it with others via a GEDCOM or family group sheets. Information on home pages, bulletin boards, and mailing lists is electronic publication. It is OK to collect and compile information about your living relatives, but don't share it (unless you have their permission, of course) with others -- in any format via any means. During the preparation of a talk for my local genealogical society on this subject, I searched hundreds of genealogy-related home pages. At one I found the names and details about everyone in the family, including when and where they were all born, right down to a one-month-old grandson, listing the hospital in which he was born. One researcher reports, "In just one file that I downloaded . . . I found more than 200 names of persons born within the last 70 years . . ." Another notes, "I was shocked and dismayed to find that someone had copied my entire GEDCOM and put it up on their Web site. While I have no objection to anyone using my dead ancestors, this person had included the living as well . . ." Now, I've heard from several genealogists who claim it does not matter what we put up on our home pages or share on the Internet since "this information is all public information, anyway." Another one argues that "unless and until they quit putting births, deaths and marriages in the newspapers the basic relationships and names are and will remain public info." I have no quarrel about marriage and death records -- if they are really obtained from public sources. However, I asked several correspondents to provide me with the source of the birth information posted on their home pages, and guess what I learned? In every instance the data were either supplied by a cousin or obtained from a GEDCOM that someone had sent them. In other words, they had not found the information in a public source at all. Take a look at the policy posted at "Don't Mess with the Living, Texas" <http://home.sprynet.com/~harrisfarm/warning.htm>: "It is the policy of the Texas GenWeb Project to protect the rights and privacy of our living relatives. We strongly encourage all involved to do their best not to place information on the Internet about anyone who is still living, unless you have their express permission to do so." Among the suggestions for ways to protect living family members are: * When requesting information (via e-mail, chat, queries, etc.) do not include personal information on living persons. * When responding to requests for information, especially to someone you really do not know, do not provide them with personal information about living persons. They could post it on the Web or do who knows what else with it. * Before sharing GEDCOM files with others, expunge information on all living persons. Programs such as GEDClean, GEDLiving, and GEDPrivy will do this for you. * If you have a genealogy Web site, remove information about all living persons. (Check Cyndi's Genealogy Home Page * Construction Kit <http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm> for tips and links to the several GEDCOM utility programs that will exclude such data.) * British genealogists are using the "GEN100" logo to signify that their Web site respects a cut-off date of 100 years, and to advise that information which is less than 100 years old will not be divulged. Many Americans use January 1920 as the cut-off point, since that is the most recent federal census available to the public. We should exercise good manners and respect the privacy of our families -- those generous relatives who have shared information with us or who shared with a cousin of a cousin. Additionally, there is another and growing problem -- identity theft. Why make it easy for cyberthieves to steal your or a loved one's identity? When you post public messages about your research, it is sufficient to say you are researching a Cynthia Jones line. You don't have reveal relationship by saying she is your mother or maternal grandmother. To learn more about identity theft and other privacy issues visit: <http://www.identitytheft.org/> and <http://www.privacyrights.org/>. In the pursuit of our ancestors, let's not hurt ourselves or our living family members. Think before you post or share data.

    3. Hello all, Am trying to get back into the swing of things after two weeks away... had a wonderful road trip across this great country of ours and was lucky enough to have good weather the whole way but for one little snow storm in Indiana which timed itself beautifully to let me have more tiime there for research ;]! I will be posting the results of what I found as I sort it out. I have pretty much gone thru all my accumualted email and there seem to be only a couple of problems. If you had a list problem and you do not hear from me personally today, please email me again - I had a HUGE backlog of mail and it is entirely possible that in my hasty perusal, I may have missed something! 1. [DEWHURST-L] Listowner out of town...
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, I am about to venture out into the "wild blue yonder" on what fr me is a dream trip. I fly to New York on Monday, hook up with my 20 year old and her beloved 1989 Saab... then we are driving home along the migration routes followed by our family lines! Itinerary is New York thru Harrisburg, PA (Amish Country) to Cincinnati, OH (to meet some of you!) Madison, IN (my Switzerland Co. connection) to St. Louis, MO (for fun) then thru Kansas (no research to do there, but depending on time and our humor/wear and tear on each other ;] , may do a side jaunt down Chanute, Sedan, Emporia and Neodesha, then to Denver (southern route) (to see friends and meet a few more of you ;]) then to Salt Lake (to see a bunch of 20-something cousins and hit the library) then the (for me) yukky part thru Nevada to good old Winnemuca (I can see the motel shining in the distance) and finally home to the Bay Area. Expect to be home no later than the weekend of the 20th... I will not be able to access this email address while I am gone, so I cannot do much "techy stuff" - these lists are (happily) small enough and you are all kind enought that I rarely have problems, so I feel OK about it. Still, I will be accessing my aol account, and if anyone wants/needs to reach me, you can use that address, jmbrock@aol.com... You all be good now, while I'm gone! I feel like the proverbial mother hen kicking her chicks out of the nest ;] Jana

    3. This was announced in the Rootsweb Review.... I just took a look.... WOW! Jana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE IMMIGRANT SHIP TRANSCRIBERS GUILD (ISTG) IS GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS. When the guild began its work on September 16, 1998, there were 50 volunteers within a week. Now nearly 500 volunteers are transcribing ship passenger lists that will be posted on the ISTG Web site. The guild accepts new volunteers on a quarterly basis. The next group will be accepted in April, 1999, so if you are interested in joining at that time, please read the FAQ under Guild Information. More than 300 passenger lists are now posted at the Web site and new passenger lists are posted weekly. <http://istg.rootsweb.com>

    3. Hi all, Take a look! Terry Dewhurst has taken on the task of creating GenConnect Boards for us! Take a look here and bookmark them! Thanks Terry!!! http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dew/Dewhurst http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/dew/DewhurstBios GenConnect Boards offer us another way to let researchers find us. Here, bulletin board style, whatever you post will stay posted in a searchable format rather than get placed into archives you have to put keywords into to search. This is another Rootsweb offering, so you know it is part of the effort to protect our right to research affordably! HINT: Try to be specific with info about your particular line of the family in your subject header so folks can find you easily... ("Wm. Jms. Dewhurst, b. 2 February 1852; Finchley, Middlesex, England" will get you more replies than "another Dewhurst line"). As you have queries or information to post, by placing it here, everytime a new Dewhurst researcher begins their search, they have a chance to find you, link with you and give you both a chance to share information... I have just spent the last week updating one of my lines by 200 years after locating someone using these techniques! It really does work... in my case, I now "know" another cousin, a very elderly gentleman who has spent 30 years researching this branch thoroughly... he is being very generous in sharing with me as I exchange information with him showing I really am a legit descendent of this line. I am going to post my family "saga" on the bio page in the hopes that I can round up oneday the remaining "lost cousins"....... Over time, this database will offer all our children a legacy of Dewhurst info..... Go for it!!!! Jana

    1. [DEWHURST-L] "Free" way to support Rootsweb!
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hi all, I am copying this message to all of my lists. There has been lots of conversation lately about the future of Rootsweb given the corporate buy-outs of Broderbund and Palladium, etc. into the mega-consortium of Mattel and the concurrent "trickle down" effects for armchair genealogists. Palladium has been the corporate sponsor for Rootsweb as you may or may not know. Rootsweb must now work quickly to protect its goals of offering a continuing free exchange of genealogical information for folks who choose to share such data on the net. Additionally, GenForum has been swept up into the Broderbund umbrella and the news this week announced that Yahoo is buying Geocities. For me, Rootsweb is becoming about all that is left for the common folk who may not have the expendable cash to "pop" for each new CD that may or may no toffer me one or two pieces of usable dat in my research - if it is correct and not misreported, unsubstantiated data! The question was recently posed as to how anyone who did not feel they were in a position to offer money could still support Rootsweb with their time. Here is a response which all listowners have been given permission to post. If you fall into this category, I encourage you to contact Kay!
