    3. Hello one and all... The pages continue to grow! This week: 1) we have new charts from Theresa Dewhurst and Sheila Dewhurst who suspect they are very close to connecting lines - see if you can help them out! Here are charts for Thomas Dewhurst, Gentleman of Cotton Hall, Lower Darwen, Blackburn, Lancashire, England http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/tdewThom1743.htm & the Descendants of William Dewhurst & Betty Crossley of Blackburn & Chorley, Lancashire, England http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/tdewWM1773.htm 2) David Freeman has added some more background data regarding the symbols on our shield and their relationship rooted in Christianity. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/dewhurstname.html Don't forget to take a look at the Dewhurst signet ring photo posted on the middle of the page! 3) Wendy Dewhirst has added birth and death data to the charts for Joseph Dewhirst and Isabella Musgrave in the descendancy of William Dewhirst and Hannah Nicholson http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/dewhirstwm.html And, from what she said, Wendy has found what she calls a "treasure trove of Dewhirst ancestors" in Bradford cemetery listings. Hopefully, she will post the data on the list when she has time! I am beginning to see a pattern which certainly "fits" in my line... I suspect we are a pretty independent bunch which may be why we didn't keep close contact with other family members as we went on with our lives. We also may not have been the best at writing things down... there appears to be LOTS of undocumented oral tradition. On the other hand, we did some moving about in the 1800s, but it looks to me that once we settled, we are still pretty much wherever we landed or where we never left ;] I suspect that most of us are either "stuck" in the late 17-1800s, or cannot go further back than 1700. David's data suggests Dewhursts in England as far back as 1300. Gee, if we can all sort out our 17-1800s, we can put our heads together from there back ;] Happy hunting one and all! Jana

    3. Hello all, Wellllll, leave it to a California kid to confuse the British Shires! On the other hand it only took me two days to figure out Preston was in Lancashire NOT Nottinghamshire..... soooooooo....... maybe it is not so bad! Remember, I have been no further than London and Oxfordshire, so for heaven's sake, correct me if I get it wrong! It is with just a bit of egg on my face that I retract my previous announcement that we had our first Nottinghamshire Dewhurst family group posted... On the other hand, we do have additional data added to the charts of William Dewhurst and Margaret nee Finch that take us to Melbourne, Australia! I am still quite pleased at our collective progress and look forward to seeing more bits and pieces come in to paint a fuller picture! Thanks everyone and enjoy! Jana

    1. [DEWHURST] William Dewhurst and Margaret nee Finch - Nottinghamshire
    2. Jana Black
    3. Hello all, Our Nottinghamshire branch is officially open with a submission from Jeff & Kathy Orford-Perkins! It isn't huge, but we aren't picky, right? Every little bit helps. Take a look here <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/1dewhurst.html> at the charts for William Dewhurst and Margaret nee Finch. See if they give you anything to work with yourself and if so, let us all know! Collectively, I just know we will get our family groups worked out... Subscriptions to the list are slowly growing, so more and more descendants are all "looking over each other's shoulders" to see where we all fit. Does anyone have this family further back than 1700? Does anyone find them anywhere else than in England in those early times? I am dying to know if there is any truth to the rumors in my family that the family originated in the Black Hills of Austria, came with the court of Marie Antoinette to France, then fled to Hull when Marie's head was "offed".... Let's keep the dialogue going ;] Jana

    1. [DEWHURST] DEWHURST JOHN B:1835 LANCASHIRE

    3. I am a newbie and am hoping that someone may have knowledge of my ancestors. Most of the information was taken from Shipping Logs of the ship "Wanata" which left Liverpool on the 5th of May 1864 and arrived in Sydney on the 3rd of September 1864. My ancestor John Dewhurst, aged 28, a Railway Labourer, who was born at Preston, and his wife Elizabeth, aged 23 or 25, a Silk Weaver, who was born at Rochedale, immigrated to Australia on the above ship with two children. The eldest child, Henry was born at Ashton under Lyne and the second child James was born at Manchester. John's parents were James and Elizabeth Dewhurst who in 1864 were living at Eddington Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Elizabeth's parents were John and Ruth Standering (Spandering). In 1864 Ruth was deceased and John was living at Rochedale. I hope all the above spelling is correct as in the past people sure liked using a lot of curls and swirls in their writing. I am hoping that someone might recognise something so as to save me a lot of time and effort and so that I might be able to join the Dewhurst Clan. Thanking anyone in advance who may have any helpful information. Brian Brian Fair Warilla NSW

    1. [DEWHURST] new charts!

    3. Hello all, Little by little the families are coming together! I was contacted by Barbara Burrows and Bonnie Whitley who are researching Jeremiah Dewhurst II, son of Jeremiah and Mary Hollings in the charts of Thomas Dewhurst and Mary Yewdall. Those charts had been provided earlier by Kathy McKegg and Janet Ogden (phew!). Good thing our collective family is relatively small ;] Not only have the above mentioned folks contacted each other and shared, between them all we have been able to add quite a bit of christening information which sorted out the sibling order in some of the existing family group charts. So far, this opens up a sibling line with the first name of Jeremiah II's wife and only one child, Susannah. BUT, this may be just enough information to allow someone else to hook up what they have to this family and fill in the Mom's name and the rest of the siblings - we all win! Take a look: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/dewhursthomas.html#Jeremiah If you can NOW connect into this family and have data to add to what is posted, send it on! I was really excited to see this kind of connection get made. Thanks to what Kathy and Janet had submitted, Barbara and Bonnie were able to add a couple of generations to their research! In exchange, Kathy and Janet's charts have filled out as well. My personal agenda??? I figure that if enough of you put up data, eventually, whomever it is that I need to connect with to hook my William Henry into his ancestral line will surface - I can't get to London right now, might as well get you all to send me the data, right? This is the "cheap" way to do British research from California ;] Another thing... I saw a terrific research tool at a genealogy workshop yesterday. You make a timeline of what was happening in the history of the localities your people lived and compare it to what the people did (i.e., were they sedentary or on the move and what was happening locally to perhaps motivate them stay put or move?). I must confess, my California education regarding British history of the 16-17 &1800s is seriously lacking detail.... If any of you have this kind of data and want to send it, I will post it so we can all use it. I guess the primary geographic areas would be Yorkshire, Lancashire, London and then there is the Nottinghamshire group I know exists but that we have not so far heard from...... This can be as good as you all help me make it.... Onward! Jana

Dewhurst of Lowell in the County of Middlesex and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament. It is my will that my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my estate. I devise to my wife Jane for her natural life the use of my cottage house with its appurtenances and I also give her the use of all my household furniture and housekeeping articles for and during her natural life. I give to my wife twelve dollars each month during her natural life payable out of rents and interest money arising (?) from my estate. And these provisions I intend to be in lieu of dower and any other share in my estate. In case my executors shall deem it expedient to sell the cottage house at any time they and the survivor of these and any successor in the trust are hereby authorised to do so and to make valid deed and conveyance thereof in fee-simple, but my wife in that case is still to have the income or interest of the proceeds during her natural life. It is my will that my son Richard J Dewhurst shall for the space of ten years from the time of receiving the same have the use of the whole amount bequeathed to me by my sister Elizabeth Dewhurst, he paying therefor (?) three percent interest to be repaid to my estate at the end of said ten years. My watch and chain and seals I give and bequeath to James Dewhurst, son of my nephew James Dewhurst of Blackburn, England. It is my will that my executors collect said legacy given me by my sister Elizabeth as soon as conveniently can be done. Upon the death of my wife I direct that all my estate real personal and mixed (except said sum loaned to my son Richard J Dewhurst as above provided and all interest there on) shall with reasonable dispatch be converted into money and when so converted it is my will that the sum of twenty dollars be paid to my son in law Albert Moors in consideration of faithful services rendered to me in sickness; and the remainder of my property so converted into money shall be divided into three equal parts. >From one of said parts the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars is to be deducted and that part (so lessened by the deduction) I give and bequeath to my son William, together with my box of tools which I except from sale and which is not to be valued in said division. Another of said parts I give and bequeath to my daughter Anna's child Albert Edward Moors not to be paid to him until he arrives at the age of twenty years, but to accumulate till that time if my wife dies before that time and in case said Albert Edward shall die before he arrives at the age of twenty years his said share shall go to his brother James (Simon?) Moors. The other of said parts with one hundred and fifty dollars added is to be equally divided into three parts, and one thereof I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah, and another thereof I give and bequeath to the children of my deceased daughter Mary, to be divided equally between them, and the other thereof to the children of my deceased daughter Elizabeth Dowling to be divided equally between them or if she has but one it is (?) that one. In case of the death of said Sarah before she becomes entitled to her said share then the share which would have gone to her if living shall go to her children to be equally divided between them. And in case of the death of any of the children of said Mary before they become entitled to their said share then the shares of the deceased shall go to the survivors to be equally divided between them. And in case of the death of any of the children of said Elizabeth before they become entitled to their said share then the share of the deceased shall go to the survivors to be equally divided between them.
