    2. Unfortunately this is not the line I am looking for. It's the Dewhurst family of Skipton who founded the Belle Vue Mill in 1828. John Dewhurst (1787-1864) and his wife Alice Bonny (1789-1865) had two sons John Bonny (1819-1904) & Thomas Henry (1830) and two daughters Alice Hopkinson (1825) & Elizabeth Ann (1829). I think Elizabeth Ann might have run off with the family coachman, hence my earlier request. 3. To Lee and All, It's good to see so many people interested in the name! I'm really glad that the info I posted about DEWHURSTs in NYC helped someone. I've always felt that there was probably some relationship between the different ones - but I've not found it yet. In addition to our Richard James (nuts and bolts) in Manhattan, and Henry (plasterer) Manhattan - there's also Richard James (metal work) lived Staten Island - had a business Manhattan. Our DEWHURST family came from Blackburn. They were there for quite a while - then moved to Chorley in Lancashire. The next move was to the US - they settled in Lowell, MA for some years. At the time, the occupation was "print block cutter" I believe they carved the wooden blocks that were then used to print on the cloth. After Lowell, the family moved to NYC and were settled there by 1860. If anyone thinks they see a promising lead, please let me know. If you want to see more details, check out Jana's DEWHURST page. 3. Hi The Dewhurst line I'm researching is from north Lancashire and Westmorland (old boundaries) areas. The earliest Dewhurst is John DEWHURST, born abt 1808, in Lyth Westmorland. He married Margaret ELLWOOD (bapt 17 Oct 1813, Cartmell Parish) in Cartmell Parish 14 Nov 1831. Their children are (this is probably not a complete list): Thomas Dewhurst, bapt 4 Jul 1835, Cartmell Parish (married Mary HUTCHINSON, 10 Mar 1862, Cartmell Parish) John Dewhurst, bapt 8 Dec 1839, Cartmell Parish Timothy Dewhurst, bapt 18 Feb 1844, Cartmell Parish Robert Dewhurst, b. 2 Dec 1846 (my line, see below) Eleanor Dewhurst, bapt 16 Oct 1853, Cartmell Parish William Dewhurst, bapt 13 Sep 1857, Cartmell Parish Robert DEWHURST married Mary YOUDELL (b. 6 Jan 1842, Penrith, Cumberland) on 16 May 1869 in Kendal, Westmorland. Their children are: Margaret A Dewhurst, b. abt 1869, Bowness, Westmorland Agnes Dewhurst, b abt 1872, Bowness, Westmorland Elizabeth Dewhurst, b, abt 1873, Cartmell Fell, Lancashire Robert Dewhurst, b. abt 1876, Cartmell Fell, Lancashire Hannah Dewhurst, b abt 1879, Cartmell Fell, Lancashire Richard Dewhurst, b. 7 Mar 1882, Cartmell Fell, Lancashire, married Isabella Wade, Alice Sarah Moore, died 3 Mar 1964, North Vancouver, BC, Canada Ellen Dewhurst (my grandmother, always went by Helen), b. 12 Nov 1884, Crosthwaite, Westmorland, married William PENNINGTON, 22 Oct 1908 at Barneside, Westmorland, died 1 Apr 1968, West Vancouver, BC, Canada My brickwall (at this moment) is finding John Dewhursts birth. My information for his age and location of birth comes from the 1881 census and a quick perusal of BT's for Heversham Parish doesn't show a John Dewhurst born in that time frame. As I was pursuing other lines last year, I haven't checked other sources yet but will be doing so shortly. Incidentally, I found a baptism in Cartmell Parish for a Jane Dewhurst, 6 Jan 1833, daughter of James and Mary Dewhurst, Cark, Labourer. I don't know if she fits in to any family but if anyones looking for her, here she is. Bud Pennington

    3. My Dewhurst information begins in Ribchester, Lancaster, England. I have info from the 1851 Liverpool, England census, NYC/USA censuses, and helpful NYC information posted here by Teresa Dewhurst - thanks Teresa! Henry Dewhurst, born abt 1809 in Ribchester, Lancaster, Eng, married Catherine Mooney, born Ireland, and died before 1878. Henry and some sons were plasterers. In 1851 they lived in Liverpool and had: Mary b. abt. 1830, Liverpool John b. abt 1832, Liverpool Margret b. abt 1835, Liverpool Thomas b. abt 1840, Liverpool - wife was Agnes Richard b abt 1844, Liverpool Emma Caroline, b 20 Sep 1846, Liverpool. M. 11 Feb 1868 NYC Milton Joseph Cook div in 1878 Van Buren Co, MI, and she m 2nd Jarvis Macomber Skinner. She died 4 Apr 1895 in Albion, NY. Emma is my gr gr grandmother. William Joseph Dewhurst - b abt 1849 - born surname: Gore, listed as abandoned by parents in 1851 census, but later Dewhursts apparently adopted him, as he lists them as his parents when he married 27 Oct 1872 to Mary Agnes McNally in NYC, and later Elizabeth Connolly in NYC. Cathrine b abt 1851, Liverpool Ann Dewhurst, b 1852 (after 1851 census, but ID'd in later census and family records), probably in Liverpool, married Mr. Mahnkien, NYC, but not living with him in 1880 census. Brick Walls: Henry is not in the IGI. A cousin is looking in the three or so films that Salt Lake City has re Ribchester church records, looking for Henry's parents. Anyone else have Ribchester Dewhursts? There were a lot of them there! I do not know what became of any of my Emma's siblings. I know she was very close to her sister, Ann Mahnkien. I cannot find her in later censuses. I believe she may have remarried, and new surname unknown. Would really like to find some of these relatives. 3. Hi everybody My sister and I are researching our roots our maiden name was Dewhurst. Here goes. The family seems to have lived in Preston a suburb of Manchester. our Father was Edward b 1919 married to Edna Hoffmann 1942 grandfather Cornelius Dewhurst married to Florence Tattersall 1919 g.grandfather also Cornelius Dewhurst married to Mary Orford 1879 g.g grandfather William Dewhurst married to Margaret Finch 1855 We are now stuck as there are three Williams born in Preston all within 1 year of one another and all with the father John Dewhurst .The only thing we know is at the time of Williams Marriage they lived in Dover St and John was a carder. We have tried the 1851 census not 1 William was living at home with Mum and Dad. If any one could solve our dilemma we would be very grateful. Regards Edna
