    1. Re: [DEV] LDS Changes
    2. The main problem on Wikitree is people merging several generations into one person. These people who seem to know better than the rest of us lost two generations of my family when they merged three generations of people named John. I also found that their software was not the best in the world. It's difficult at times to delete should you make an error. It also deleted my email address. When I logged in again I had a new profile. Which didn't connect to my family pedigree. It also fail to up load a gedcom file, they request people to up load. Their idea of one vast family tree just isn't going to work in my opinion. It will contain to many errors. Plus you could get one person to wreck it all with false information. On principle I decided not to add any more of my family to this source. I signed up to an account and as much of my research has been aided by LDS, I though that I would give something back and put my tree on-line. However, as you build the tree, it identifies other likely matches on the database. This may be a single entry or a whole tree. The net result is that I am overwhelmed by work to validate the suggested lines. I have tried to tidy up the direct family line by making corrections and appropriate connections, but clearly there is an opportunity here to break down brick walls as you work. My family has also made the decision to place our family history on WikiTree. WikiTree has the advantage over LDS in that it also records genetic genealogy results, giving the opportunity to track ancestors by both paper trails and genes. There are controls to stop duplicates and there is also a code of conduct to which participants must subscribe. I find they currently have just two Devon-related collections: England, Cornwall and Devon Parish Registers, 1538-2010 and England, Devon, Parish Registers, 1538-1912 The first of these has just two Devon parishes, the second is the big West Devon collection now on FindMyPast. I've tried searching this latter collection, but can't get the facility for restricting searches to a particular parish to work. For example a search on Whitefield returns 885 results whether or not you specify, for example, Plymouth as the place of birth, marriage or death. And in fact all these events just name Devon as the place where the given birth, marriage or death took place. I've investigated the various Help facilities to no avail. However I did find the statement "This collection contains baptisms, marriages, and burials from parishes in West Devon. This collection was done in cooperation with FindMyPast, and a full version of the index can be found atwww.findmypast.co.uk." Is this a subtle way of saying that to look within a particular parish, go to FindMyPast? Can you throw any light on this?
