    3. Could it be a mis-spelling and should be -- Canal boatman. (Barges had to be "legged" through tunnels by men lying flat on deck and "walking" along the roof or sides of the tunnel) ...     3. Hello John, Are you sure that this is his profession, and that it might not perhaps have been a variant spelling of "leper"? It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the word.
