Hi Jane, Sorry it wasn't The Freedom he was granted - I expect they were given another sort of civic honour - there should be a book in the reference section of the city library listing those honoured for bravery during the war by E.C.C. In the 20c roughly only one person a year was made a freeman of the city, these were visiting dignitaries or men entitled "by succession". Kind regards Roz -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jane Hope Sent: 25 November 2013 19:17 To: DEVON@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] Exeter people/groups granted freedom of the city Thank you all for trying to help re the people who've been granted the freedom of the city. I'll explain how my quest has come about. Many of you may know of a website Exeter Memories - rather a good site where people have added their memories of Exeter (I've done so myself). Anyway Exeter Memories now has a Facebook page and a number of us were "chatting" and remembered a bus conductor who was a real character and his name was Archie. I went on to say that my mother had told me that he'd been granted the freedom of the city along with a couple of other men for bravery during WWII. If you could help Roz, I'd be most grateful, but I don't know anything other than the man's name was Archie (short for Archibald I assume) and would have been given sometime around 1945 I would think. Most grateful Best wishes, Jane PS - sorry for delay in response but I've been away for a few days. > From: RozMH@talktalk.net > To: devon@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2013 07:15:35 +0000 > Subject: Re: [DEV] Exeter people/groups granted freedom of the city > > Bev I was offering to look-up for Jane - I have the book. > Thanks anyway. > > Roz > > -----Original Message----- > From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] > On Behalf Of B.
