    3. Hello all Can anyone who lives in or near Cullompton please tell me if there is any information on the Tollgate on the Tiverton Road. My husband's 3xggm Mary Ann Pearcey was the toll collector according to the 1871 census and I would be interested in further information on the place. Strangely enough this is the second person in his background to do this job. I know they were being phased out by this time and she wasn't there in 1881. Thanks Anne DFHS 6314

    2. Hi Anne Often with toll collectors there was a toll cottage with the job, if the family lived there it's most likely that the job of toll collector remained in the family. Like wise with lock keepers on the water ways there was a lock keepers cottage with the job. Persey or variations of the spelling often turns up in my family around the Cullompton area. There are a number of ***** Persey Blackmore's in the family pedigree.
