Many of the Devonshire village have their own website where they list details of the village etc., try a search for those specific names if not try Genuk -----Original Message----- From: Elizabeth Drummond Sent: Saturday, December 28, 2013 7:56 PM To: DEVON@rootsweb.com Subject: [DEV] Background reading for West Alvington, Northam,Buckland Brewer areas First of all, Happy New Year to everyone! I know it’s a long shot but maybe somebody has come across a diary or journal about the areas around these parishes. I know of no relevant published books and have trawled through “British manuscript diaries of the 19th century: an annotated listing”, to no avail. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I’ll be in the UK next summer so could read any manuscripts then- if there are any! Hi Terry: On 29 Dec 2013, at 00:33, <Terryblackmore@blueyonder.co.uk> <Terryblackmore@blueyonder.co.uk> wrote: > Many of the Devonshire village have their own website where they list > details of the village etc., try a search for those specific names if not > try Genuk Let me suggest a variant on this strategy, namely to search GENUKI/Devon first, and then do a general search on the parish name, in case you can find any other websites that merit being listed in GENUKI/Devon, in which case I would appreciate receiving their details! :-) The rationale: it is I hope the case that most of the worthwhile parish sites are listed in GENUKI/Devon already! Parish and village websites - especially those run by enthusiastic individuals - often move or disappear, though some are splendid. Official ones run by the Parish Council tend to be better in this regard, though by no means all include much information of genealogical or historical relevance. But worse is that there are a significant number of commercial national websites that consist simply of a huge set of automatically-generated pages, one per parish or village, each mostly filled with exactly the same generic (national or county-level) information, and only rarely with any parish or village-specific information (other than advertisements, perhaps) added in - these clog up the search results most annoyingly. And, finally, this strategy will help improve GENUKI/Devon, and hence your fellow genealogists.
