    3. Hi Diana,   Is this him? http://www.convictrecords.com.au/convicts/bishop/john/118356   Joy ________________________________ From: Diana Stevens <diagramdiana@iinet.net.au> To: devon@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, 28 December 2013, 13:07 Subject: [DEV] John BISHOP convicted at Exeter 1831 Seasons greetings to all. For years I have been trying to find out what happened to my GG-Grandfather John BISHOP. He disappeared ca 1830-1831. I have now found in Woolmer's Exeter and Plymouth Gazette of 19 Mar 1831 the Calendar for the Lent Assizes in Exeter which includes a John BISHOP age 27 (he was bap 10 Apr 1803 at Teigngrace) accused of burglary. I have also found the sentence/acquittal of 5 of the other 6 burglars on the list in the E&PG of 26 Mar 1831 but not John. I have found him in a prison hulk, with a life sentence, convicted at Exeter on 17 Mar 1831 of 'breaking into a house with tools'. I can't find him in any of the Australian Convict Indexes but of course not all the prisoners on hulks were transported. Before I do anything else I need to find where the crime took place so that I can judge if he is my John. A report in The North Devon Journal and General Advertiser of 31 Mar 1831 gives the sentence of the 6th burglar but not John. The article is 'concluded from our last'  but despite trying many names of other prisoners in the Calendar I can't find the previous NDJ. Trove, the Australian newspaper site allows you to search for a specific paper by date but that does not seem possible on FMP. Any suggestions gratefully received. 3. Hi Joy Thanks for that, it certainly sounds like the one I found in the newspaper. I have not done any convict research for a long time and I did not know about that site. It is interesting that someone has added details of his death, I shall try to contact them. I still need a bit more information about him to convince me he is the right one. My John BISHOP was probably living in West Teignmouth as some years later this was his place of Settlement on the Removal Order for his 'son' John Oxford BISHOP as stated by his mother Maria GREENSLADE, though in fact JOB was illegitimate.
