Hi Katherine Thanks for that. I spent the morning contemplating all the confusing details of this family after finding a report of his sentence. Tim Treeby suggested using the British Newspaper Archive indexes and then viewing on FMP, so I did a narrow date search of all newspapers and found the report of his sentencing in the Sherborne Mercury 28/03/1831: "DEVON LENT ASSIZES John Bishop was convicted of stealing divers tools from a certain building adjoining the dwelling house of John Stooke, the property of John Barton Stooke, There was another indictment against the prisoner for larceny, and the Judge, therefore, sentenced him to be transported for life." In the census I found John Barton STOOKE lived in Kingskerswell and he was a Timber Merchant. John BISHOP was a carpenter, he may have worked in the timber yard so he knew where the tools were kept. At the beginning of 1830 John was still living in Wolborough where he married 28 Aug1825 (a sojourner) and had two sons Richard (bap 12 Mar 1826) & William (bap 30 Jan 1830). William was buried there 2 Feb 1830. It is not far from Kingskerswell. I had decided he was probably my John Bishop but I wanted the final proof. I got to the stage of finding that record in the Tasmanian Archives but stopped to prepare lunch before going further. I always had doubts about whether the John baptised at Teigngrace in 1803 was my John BISHOP, as was suggested to me by a DFHS researcher in 1998, despite the matching naming patterns. I needed at least some idea of how old the John who married Maria was, now I have it. He was only 5 ft 3.75 in tall. At least one of his male grandchildren and several in the next two generations are 6 ft 3 in! >From his conduct record he was not a well behaved prisoner, and in it he has provided another puzzle to solve. He claims he has four children, I only know of the two children mentioned above. The BARTON family had two farms. My home is just round the corner from one of them at North Whilborough which is a hamlet in the parish. Hi Dennis If you happen to have the Kingskerswell PRs on hand maybe you could check for any BISHOP baptisms in the 1825-1831 time period. According to the Tasmanian Convict records John BISHOP's wife Maria was living at Newton Abbot (probably went home to Mum) and there were 4 children. I have only found 2 sons baptised in Wolborough one of whom died as an infant. Kingskerswell is a parish in the area where they lived. My only connection to the BARTON and STOOKE families is because my GG-Grandfather stole from John Barton STOOKE, a Timber Merchant who lived at Hilly (or Holly) House, Howe Lane, Kingskerswell, he was born at Coffinswell. Have you checked for baptisms before the marriage? There is a baptism at Wolborough 14 Aug 1824 William Soper Pook, mother Mary Pook. There is a William Pook born c1826 in the same household as Maria in 1861 described as nephew. Did Maria have a sister Mary? Hello Diana, If you are having a problem with the name, Barton Stooke of Kingskerswell, I would suggest you check BARTER STOOKE. The Barters had two farms at Kingskerswell. One in the village and one at North Whilborough which is a hamlet in the parish of Kingskerswell. A marriage connected the two families at Kingskerswell. The Stooke family lived at Broadgate, a lovely house now demolished. Dennis Bramble.
