Yes John, You always need a map but a Satnav allows the passenger/navigator to view the surroundings instead of just watching the map and continually checking signs, mileage and location markers. Marg.
Spot on Marg. Map reading is not a skill understood by a significant portion of the population - getting it wrong can cause aggravation and disputes, etc. SATNAV helps to alleviate most of these issues. I never use hard-copy maps anymore while touring. Perhaps it's a generational thing, or a sad reflection on our educational systems. Technology is useful - until it's not there and the brain is required to function. I've toured in the US (46 States) most of western Europe, W Africa and Australia with the aid of paper maps, and am still married to my co-pilot after over 50 years!!!!!! I've said my piece, so now back to tracing my Devon roots. John On 17/01/2019 11:03 am, Len Heyward wrote: > Spot on Marg. I certainly agree with you. Locally I use google maps or other mobile maps, but there is nothing like a paper map for planning a route, seeing what is nearby to a destination. One can miss a lot by being centered on one destination and missing the neighboring environment or a short detour to see someone or something. But I took geography in school, and they don't teach it much anymore. Just to add that Google Maps has public transport, cycling and walking options as well as driving.
