    3. I know the story - she's famous in England - (but very few people would know the name of the ship hat was wrecked) But - Northumberland is long way from Exeter. Who came up with the idea for the memorial? (the Exeter Civic society page doesn't say) Are there any others? Had the Duke of Northumberland any connection with St Thomas's? Or Robert Smeddle? I think you're probably right - her fame was nationwide after all. On it is the following inscription: THIS STONE [WAS] ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE [UN]PARALLELED ACHIEVEMENT OF GRACE HORSELY DARLING WHO ON SEPT 7TH 1838 RESCUED NINE HUMAN BEINGS FROM THE WRECK OF THE FORFARSHIRE STEAMER SOUTHERN ISLANDS OFF NORTHUMBERLAND SHE DIED OCTOBER 20 1842 AGED 26 AND WAS BURIED IN BAMBURGH CHURCH NORTHUMBERLAND ERECTED 1845 BY PERMISSION OF THE VICAR AND CHURCHWARDENS RESTORED BY SUBSCRIPTION 1869 AND AGAIN IN 1911 Does anyone know what connection (if any) Grace Darling had with Exeter? Chris Whitehead - in a rather windy Devon

    3. Hi Chris I have no idea re the connection with Exeter but there is a piece in the Newspapers. Maybe one of the persons she recued was from Exeter. The Dundee Courier & Argus and Northern Warder (Dundee, Scotland), Tuesday, December 04, 1877; Grace Horsley DARLING who, with her father, Mr. W. DARLING, took charge of the Longstone Lighthouse etc etc., the weather was so dangerous etc they saved five of the crew and four of the deck passengers. http://callisto.ggsrv.com.rp.nla.gov.au/imgsrv/FastFetch/UBER2/0000474_18440926_0002-F?&highlight=00ff00+0.7+4342+6679+115+31+4476+6671+154+44+4649+6666+159+41&scale=0.33&crop=856+102+790+3073&format=jpg She may have been named after the following Grace Horsley DARLING The Stirling Observer (Stirling, Scotland), Thursday, September 26, 1844; pg. 2; Issue 422. British Library Newspapers, Part III: 1741-1950. Memorial to Grace Darling: In a sculpture-yard of Mr. Davis, of Pilgrim Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a headstone, the order for which has been given by Archdeacon Thorpe, of Durham, intended to be be placed in St Cuthbert's Chapel, Fern Islands, in memory of the heroic Grace Darling. The tablet is a beautiful stone cippus, about six feet in height whereon is carved the following expressive inscription, embodying the exquisite poetry of Wordsworth" In memory of Grace Horsley Darling, a native of Barnburgh, and an inhabitant of these islands, who died Oct. 20. A.D. 1842, aged 23 years." Then verse etc. Regards Bev -------------------------------------------------- From: "Chris Whitehead" <chris@coalole.eclipse.co.uk> Sent: Saturday, December 8, 2018 1:50 AM To: <DEVON-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [DEV] Grace Darling > A small puzzle.
