On the 1851 census there is a Hugh Johns aged 2, born Black Torrington, Labourer, living at Village, Black Torrington with mother Anney aged 74, Cordwinder's widow and sister Elizabeth aged 55 born Black Torrington and brother Joseph aged 30 born Beaworthy. In 1841 the same children are with mother Ann and father Francis. Ann would have been in her early 50s at Hugh's birth, not impossible but I wonder if Hugh was actually a grandson - illegitimate children were sometimes brought up as their grandparent's children. Hugh is a name that appeared in this family (see below). There are several David Vallances in the 1841 census. They seem to be located in the Northlew area so that may be a place to look for a baptism. Francis Johns married Ann Risdon at Black Torrington 30 Mar 1800. Francis and Ann baptised the following children in Black Torrington: Francis Risdon Johns 24 Jun 1815 John Johns 03 Mar 1817 Hugh Johns 15 Sep 1820 (buried 1826) Joseph Johns 30 Mar 1823 The long gap between the marriage and the baptism of Francis in 1815 suggests they may have been baptising children somewhere else before then. A single mother Ann Johns baptised a son John Francis Johns at Black Torrington 17 Sep 1834 (buried 1836). There are OPCs for Black Torrington and Beaworthy. Hugh and Susanna had a daughter Harriet Ann Johns (1857, Halwill) who is with her Grandparents James & Susanna in 1861 census. Hugh is in 1861 Census at Strews Upcott, Halwill (RG9/1509 F56 P6) age 29, Widower, born Beaworthy Hugh is in 1871/1881/1891/1901 where he is married to Sarah (Brayley/Brealy) born ca 1845, Sydenham Damerall and family. Does anyone know where I can find Hugh and any of his family before he married in 1856? Who were Hugh's parents and in particular his mother? Why does he give his name as Johns and his father as Vallance?
