    3. Google and similar free form searches can be tricky and I have noticed that Google have removed some features in order to promote their advertisers and want you to open an account. Google are no longer the fun company they used to be. There are still some things that can be done to reduce the number of hits. 1. Use the Google search tools, especially location. This restricts the search (mostly) to one country 2. Use inverted commas "" to search for a phrase i.e. "forename surname" or "Little Village". You do need to try all known spelling variations. This should also work with plurals and similar i.e. "wood" excludes woods, wooden etc. 3. A the name of the place to the search. You can add the county and neighbouring villages to give a wider search. This I find the best to initially reduce the hits. Year, or even the first 3 numbers, can also help 4. Use minus - to remove terms from the search. In this case -wood may reduce the hits considerably but if a page has a family name Wood the page would not be included. -wooden may be a better start. It is worth looking at the first 2-3 pages of hits to identify possible words. The better search engines such as the National Archives have an advanced search which formulates the query based on the above rules and you don't need to understand the Syntax. These tips help reduce the number to a manageable number to check but there is a risk you may exclude something useful but "steve dore" -facebook -vision gives around 170 hits must of which can be dismissed on scrolling the results. But you have my sympathy, a couple of years ago I was researching the DATE family for someone. Same difficulty when entering <DATE> into any search box! Happy hunting, Kathryn Adelaide (only 43.5 today!) -----Original Message----- From: <mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com> devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [ <mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com> mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of B. Edmonds Sent: Sunday, 2 February 2014 4:13 PM To: <mailto:DEVON@rootsweb.com> DEVON@rootsweb.com Subject: [DEV] Daniel Symons DOOR/DORR/DORE My problem children are Daniel Symons DOOR who married Elizabeth EDMONDS at Charles in Plymouth 3 Sep 1836. Trying to search on DOOR is a major headache as I get front door, back door, cottage door [you get the drift] Searching on DORR is not helpful either and nor is DORE [stevedore etc] although there are entries for DOOR and DORE on 1851 in Devon but nothing seems to fit. The marriage image has what looks like Daniel Symons DORR and because he could not write his X is recorded as waht looks like Daniel S. DOOR. There is a Daniel DOOR death at Stepney in 1852, if this happens to be him, did Elizabeth remarry in 1857 at Kingston R/D? I am really hoping that someone has him in their tree, and knows what happened to them. Which ever way I look at it I think there are only 3 DOOR marriages on the 3 Towns CD, one being a Robert DOOR to Eliza HEANS 16 Jan 1814 also at Plymouth Charles, could this Robert be the father? Otherwise this name is fairly scarce in Devon. Does anyone have a DOOR/DORR marriage printout with a DOOR/DORR and SYMONS marriage? Regards and thanks for any suggestions.
