There is a removal order 1833 of John Taylor, Ann his wife and Thomas from Dodbrooke to Blackawton. It might be worth getting it as it might give you some background information: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=027-995a&cid=6-5-26&kw=taylor dodbrooke#6-5-26 There is also an apprenticeship which may refer to John: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=027-995a&cid=6-12-176&kw=taylor blackawton#6-12-176 Dodbrooke baptisms can be found on Genuki Devon but the only John baptism in the time frame was 10 Feb 1765, parents Richard and Elizabeth. I couldn't see a burial for him at Dodbrooke either but the transcriptions only begin 1837. It would be useful if you could identify his age and I wondered if the death registration Kingsbridge district (which is the district for Blackawton and Dodbrooke) Sep qtr 1837 is his. Ann baptised several children at Dodbrooke after Emma Bellett. Grace 29 May 1842 Sarah Jane 27 Oct 1844 http://www.our4bears.net/parishes/Dodbrooke/Dodbrooke_bapB.htm Did Ann remarry an Arthur Lavers in 1846? There is a marriage registration Kingsbridge Jun 1846 and there is a household with Arthur Lavers aged 71, Ann Lavers aged 42 and it looks as if the older Lavers children are the Taylor children (Emma, Grace and Sarah) and John Mabin is a lodger in both this household and with Ann in 1841. As Ann married an older man I wondered if John was also older than her which might explain his failing health and death early in the marriage. Thankyou all - Joy, Bev & Tim. I remember now why I hid this in my subconscious - changes between Taylor and Lavers and back when there were also 'real' Lavers with the same forename, and another generation of fatherless waifs who also took stepfather's surname. Some of the hair has grown back. I WILL set off again, but Joy, the link sends me off to Devon Council again, and I cannot find any way of ordering on line. I will email them for simple instructions. In the meanwhile, as I get organised, my sincere thanks and I'll leave you in peace for a while. Bernie.
