    3. Somewhat later (1810 to 1815) parishes were paying men to serve in the local militia. The overseers accounts for Stoodleigh record that William Courtis' family were paid 10/6d and later 9s while he was serving in the militia. There were also monies paid to men to sign up 2 guineas(£2/2/0d) was the going rate. 16 men received the money, bu only one - William Venn - is named. Chris -----Original Message----- From: B.
