    3. G'day Margaret You could try the seamen's lists at the National Archive to see if he appears there. If he was at sea, he probably would not appear in the 1871 Census or the 1881 Census. Also you might be able to obtain his attestation papers which should have the ships in which he served and when and where he was discharged. Hope this helps. 3. I think Henry In 1871 is listed in the crew aboard the Royal Adelaide at Devonport:   and in 1881 listed as Boatswain's Mate Royal Navy at sea and ports abroad: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQHT-2S4 This is possibly Mary Ann on the 1871 census (based purely on the presence of the surname Hilton in the household and Elizabeth (Betsy) is her mother's name in 1861) but it says she is unmarried.  On Familysearch 1871 census Elizabeth Hilton and Mary Ann Turner appear as separate entries but on the original image there is no mark indicating a change of household:   RG10 piece 2117 folio 20 page 35 Stoke Hill, St Andrew, Plymouth Elzth Hilton Head age 54 Charwoman, born Hatherley Mary A Turner age 21, Charwoman, born Newcastle upon Tyne (I can't read the relationship to Head of household) Michael Watts age 2 Visitor born Torquay   In 1861 Mary Ann is listed at 86 King St, St Andrew, Plymouth: Wm Hylton  1819, Hatter, Cumberland Betsy Hylton 1819, Wife, Devon Mary A Hylton 1847, Cornwall Joshua J Hylton 1851, Plymouth   Mary Ann may have died because in 1891 there is a Henry J Turner, occ. sea faring, age 42 born Plymouth living with wife Susan (1864 Plymouth) and children Mary A (1885 Plymouth), Henry J (1887 Bristol), William J (1889 Bristol) at 21 Charles St, St George, Barton Regis, Glos.   Joy ________________________________ From: Margaret Baensch <margnb@gmail.com> To: DEVON-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, 8 January 2014, 23:11 Subject: [DEV] TURNER, Henry John & Mary Ann (nee Hylton/Hilton) Hello again Listers, I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Henry John TURNER, aged 21, R.N. 3. Hello Margaret,   I have just found the marriage on Find My Past and I think it confirms that the 1871 census sighting is correct because Mary Ann's address at the time of the wedding is 5 Stoke Hill and Stoke Hill is where she and Elizabeth are in 1871.  Also, the witnesses are G. Watson and Mary(?) Watson; I have been unable to trace the Michael Watts visiting in the 1871 census, perhaps the enumerator should have put Watson?   Because, Mary Ann gave the birthplace of Newcastle and William Hylton was originally from Cumberland, I am wondering if she is the daughter of an earlier marriage?   Joy ________________________________ From: Margaret Baensch <margnb@gmail.com> To: DEVON-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, 8 January 2014, 23:11 Subject: [DEV] TURNER, Henry John & Mary Ann (nee Hylton/Hilton) Hello again Listers, I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Henry John TURNER, aged 21, R.N. 3. Margaret, I think this is the service record of your Henry John Turner from the National Archives and can be downloaded for £3.36. If not there are another 14 hits. Admiralty: Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services. Registers. Name Turner, Henry John. Official Number: 71013. Place of Birth: Plymouth, Devon. Date of Birth: 30 April 1849. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D6604111 You can follow his career from ships musters and pay books but these are not yet scanned so require a personal visit. These documents will also confirm whether the census records posed earlier are correct or whether he was on the high seas at the time of the census.
